Onset Time Estimation of P- and S-waves at Gyeongsan Seismic Station Using Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) (Akaike Information Criterion (AIC)를 이용한 경산 지진관측소 P파와 S파 도착시간 자동추정)

  • The onset times of P- and S-waves are important information to have reliable earthquake locations, 1D or 3D subsurface velocity structures, and other related studies in seismology. As the number of seismic stations increases significantly in recent years, it becomes a formidable task for network operators to pick phase arrivals manually. This study used a simple method to estimate additional P- and S-wave arrival times for local earthquakes when a priori information (event location and time) is available using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). We applied the AIC program to the earthquake data recorded at the seismic station located in Gyeongsan (DAG2). The comparisons of automatically estimated phase arrival times with manually picked onset times showed that 95.1% and 93.7% of P-wave and S-wave arrival time estimations, respectively, are less than 0.1 second difference. The higher percentage of agreement presented the method which can be successfully applied to large data sets recorded by high-density seismic arrays.

GPU-based Acceleration of Particle Filter Signal Processing for Efficient Moving-target Position Estimation (이동 목표물의 효율적인 위치 추정을 위한 파티클 필터 신호 처리의 GPU 기반 가속화)

  • Time of difference of arrival (TDOA) method using passive sonar sensor array has normally been used to estimate the location of a concealed moving target in underwater environment. Particle filter has been introduced for effective target estimation for non-Gaussian and nonlinear systems. In this paper, we propose a GPU-based acceleration of target position estimation using particle filter and propose efficient embedded system and software architecture. For the TDOA measurement from the passive sonar sensor, we use the generalized cross correlation phase transform (GCC-PHAT) method to obtain the correlation coefficient of the signal using FFT and we try to accelerate the calculation of GCC-PHAT based TDOA measurements using FFT with GPU CUDA. We also propose parallelization method of the target position estimation algorithm using the GPU CUDA to update the state of each particle for the target position estimation using the measured values. The target estimation algorithm was verified using Matlab and implemented using GPU CUDA. Then, we realized the proposed signal processing acceleration system using NVIDIA Jetson TX1 as the target board to analyze in terms of the execution time. The execution time of the algorithm is reduced by 55% to the CPU standalone-operation on the target board. Experiment results show that the proposed architecture is a feasible solution in terms of high-performance and area-efficient architecture.

  • In this paper, we proposed receiver structure based on an iterative turbo equalization to cope with phase difference between two sensors in MIMO underwater communication channel. In a space-time coded system, it is often assumed that there are no phase errors among the multiple transmitter and receiver chains. In this paper, we have studied the effect of the phase errors between different transmit sensors and different propagation paths in the environment of MIMO underwater communication system, and have shown through BER performance by computer simulations that the bit-error-rate performance can be severely degraded. A decision-directed estimation and compensation algorithm has been proposed to minimize their effects on the system performance. In this paper, we investigate the phase differences and their effects on multiple-input and multiple-output systems, and propose a compensation algorithm for underwater channel model to minimize their effects.

  • The technology of direction finding is very important to find the direction of emitters for ELINT(electronic intelligence) system. The principle of TDOA(time difference of arrival) is to receive an emitter signal with two antennas, measure the time difference between two antennas, and converse the time difference to direction difference. This technology can be used in broadband frequency system and make the system very simple because a phase-discriminator and a voltage comparator are not needed.   • In this paper, we propose a compensation method of a non-ideal antenna array and a computationally efficient estimation method of the direction of arrival (DOA) for the antenna array. For DOA estimation, an antenna array is essential. By using the phase difference between the output signals of antennas, we can derive the DOA. In practice, however, mutual coupling between the elements of an antenna array change the beam pattern of each element and degrade the performance of DOA estimation. In the proposed method, we first estimate the DOA for the mid-subarray of the array, where all elements undergo relatively same coupling effect. We use the estimation of signal parameters via rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm to estimate the DOA. Then, we expand the array based on the estimated DOA by compensating the coupling effect. Simulation results show that the proposed method is effective when jamming to noise power ratio (JNR)is relative low.

Accuracy Analysis of 2-D Direction Finding Based on Phase Comparison (위상비교 방식을 이용한 2차원 방향탐지 정확도 분석)

  • In this paper, the author analyzes direction finding accuracy based on phase comparisons to estimate elevation and azimuth angles of arrival signals. This paper considers the uniform array configurations using four and three elements. In that direction finding structures, I present the analytic expressions for estimated elevation and azimuth angles and then analyze the direction finding errors. And one presents the design guideline of direction finding system in comparison with aspects of accuracy, structure, the number of channels in that structures. The analysis result is similar with simulation one and has difference within $1.2^{\circ}RMS$. From the proposed analysis results, one knows that when SNR is 20 dB and the baseline is half of wavelength, the estimated elevation accuracy of the uniform array using four elements is 1.15 times better than the one of the uniform array using three elements and the estimated azimuth accuracy is same each other. In addition, one knows coning error is eliminated in 2-D direction finding structure.

  • We propose a methods which is reducing direction estimation error of sound source in the reverberant and noisy environments. The proposed algorithm divides speech signal into voice and unvoice using VAD. We estimate the direction of source when current frame is voiced. TDOA (Time-Difference of Arrival) between microphone array using the GCC-PHAT (Generalized Cross Correlation with Phase Transform) method will be estimated in that frame. Then, we compare the peak value of cross-correlation of two signals applied to estimated time-delay with other time-delay in time-table in order to improve the accuracy of source location. If the angle of current frame is far different from before and after frame in successive voiced frame, the angle of current frame is replaced with mean value of the estimated angle in before and after frames.

  • Sound localization algorithm usually adapts three step process: sampling sound signals, estimating time difference of arrival between microphones, estimate location of sound source. To apply this process in indoor environment, sound localization algorithm must be strong enough against reverberant and noisy condition. Additionally, calculation efficiency must be considered in implementing real-time sound localization system. To implement real-time robust sound localization system we adapt four low cost condenser microphones which reduce the cost and total calculation load. And to get TDOA(Time Differences of Arrival) of microphones we adapt GCC-PHAT(Generalized Cross Correlation-Phase Transform) which is robust algorithm to the reverberant and noise environment. The position of sound source was calculated by using iterative least square algorithm which produce highly accurate position data.

Performance Improvement of CPSP Based TDOA Estimation Using the Preemphasis (프리엠퍼시스를 이용한 CPSP 기반의 도달시간차이 추정 성능 개선)

  • We investigate and analyze the problems encountered in frame-based estimation of TDOA (Time Difference of Arrival) using CPSP function. Spectral leakage occurring in framing of a speech signal by a rectangular window could make estimation of CPSP spectrum inaccurate. Framing with other windows to reduce the spectral leakage distorts the signal due to the asynchronous weighting around the frame specifically both ends of the frame. These problems degrade the performance of the CPSP-based TDOA estimation. In this paper, we propose a method to alleviate those problems by pre-emphasis of the speech signal. It reduces the influence of the spectral leakage by reducing dynamic range of the spectrum of a speech signal with pre-emphasis. To validate the proposed method of pre-emphasis, we carry out TDOA estimation experiments in various noise and reverberation conditions, Experimental results have shown that the framing of pre-emphasized microphone output by a rectangular window achieves higher success rate of TDOA estimation than any other framing methods.

Comparison of the sound source localization methods appropriate for a compact microphone array (소형 마이크로폰 배열에 적용 가능한 음원 위치 추정법 비교)

  • The sound source localization technique has various application fields in the era of internet-of-things, for which the probe size becomes critical. The localization methods using the acoustic intensity vector has an advantage of downsizing the layout of the array owing to a small finite-difference error for the short distance between adjacent microphones. In this paper, the acoustic intensity vector and the Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA) method are compared in the viewpoint of the localization error in the far-field. The comparison is made according to the change of spacing between adjacent microphones of the three-dimensional microphone array arranged in a tetrahedral shape. An additional test is conducted in the reverberant field by varying the reverberation time to verify the effectiveness of the methods applied to the actual environments. For estimating the TDoA, the Generalized Cross Correlation-Phase transform (GCC-PHAT) algorithm is adopted in the computation. It is found that the mean localization error of the acoustic intensimetry is 2.9° and that of the GCC-PHAT is 7.3° for T60 = 0.4 s, while the error increases as 9.9°, 13.0° for T60 = 1.0 s, respectively. The data supports that a compact array employing the acoustic intensimetry can localize of the sound source in the actual environment with the moderate reflection conditions.
