  • The four fuzzy criteria to distinguish the internal fault from the inrush for the power transformer protection have been identified. They are based on the wave shape, terminal voltage, fundamental and second harmonic component of differential current. A systemetic way to determine the associated fuzzy membership function is also proposed.

  • This study contributes to evaluate multiphase topology optimization design of plate-like structures on elastic foundations by using classic plate theory. Multi-material optimal topology and shape are produced as an alternative to provide reasonable material assignments based on stress distributions. Multi-material topology optimization problem is solved through an alternative active-phase algorithm with Gauss-Seidel version as an optimization model of optimality criteria. Stiffness and adjoint sensitivity formulations linked to thin plate potential strain energy are derived in terms of multiphase design variables and Winkler-Pasternak parameters considering elastic foundation to apply to the current topology optimization. Numerical examples verify efficiency and diversity of the present topology optimization method of elastic thin plates depending on multiple materials and Winkler-Pasternak parameters with the same amount of volume fraction and total structural volume.

  • Aluminum alloy has not only physical characteristic of very high activated high thermal conductivity and high thermal coefficient expansion but also special characteristic of great difference fusibility of hydrogen between liquid and solid phase. Because of these reasons, Aluminum welding is very different. Therefore, only MIG welding method should be applied instead of other welding methods. In this study, in order to select optimal welding conditions, it has been to investigate the effectiveness on the welding current, welding speed, flow rate of gas and welding voltage to occurrence of spatters, external shape of bead, state of penetration and width and hight of bead by using filer metal of A15356(dia. 1.21mm) on the base material of A16061.

  • Power quality is a term that is now extensively used in power systems applications, and in this context the voltage, current, and phase angle are discussed widely. In particular, different algorithms that are capable of detecting the voltage sag and swell information in a real time environment have been proposed and developed. Voltage sag and swell play an important role in determining the stability, quality, and operation of a power system. This paper presents ANFIS (Adaptive Network based Fuzzy Inference System) models with different membership functions to build the voltage shape with the knowledge of known system parameters, and detect voltage sag and swell accurately. The performance of each method has been compared with each other/other methods to determine the effectiveness of the different models, and the results are presented.

  • This paper presents design procedures of a transverse flux linear motor (TFLM). The minimum and maximum flux linkage was determined by the simplified equivalent magnetic circuit and estimated average magnetic flux density at the air gap region by considering the shape of applied magnetomotive force (MMF). With this information, the number of turns of each phase winding was calculated based on the amplitude of applied voltage and speed of a mover. The rated current, coil diameter, and winding area were obtained with the aid of an empirical formula for determining the required MMF. The usefulness of the proposed design method for TFLM is verified by the three-dimensional equivalent magnetic circuit network (EMCN) method and the experimental results of prototyped machine.

  • In this paper, LED arrays with segmented mirrors and a mask are presented as a new dark-field illuminator for reflective Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM). The illuminator can overcome the limitations of the size and the position of samples that the dark-field illuminator using a parabolic mirror has had. The new concept was demonstrated by measuring a USAF 1951 target, and it resolved a pattern in group 10 element 6 (274 nm) in the USAF target. The new design of the dark-field illuminator can enhance competitiveness of the reflective FPM as a versatile measurement method in industry.

  • Tidal waves and the fluctuation of current are studied by use of observed data on tidal level, flow velocity and river discharge in the estuarine region of the Nakdong River. Observed data on the tidal level at five stations are used to obtain the fluctuation of amplitude and phase of tides, and the change of the wave speed versus distance from the river mouth. Comnining these tidal data with the vertical distribution of horizontal velocity data, some characteristics of the periodic tidal flow are deduced: (1)Diminishing rates of the tidal amplitude ratio η / η$\_$0/ at high tide were 0.058η$\_$0H/ /Km at neap tides. The constant of phase change, K, was 0.035rad/km. (2)While proceeding landward, the shape of the tidal wave changes from symmetrical to asymmetrical. The traveling speed of the tidal wave crest was estimated to be 3.6∼5.2m/sec, while that of the tidal wave trough was 2.4∼ 3.5m/sec. (3)The flowing speed of the water varies periodically in accordance with the tidal period. The maximum speed of landward flow appeared approximately at two hours before the high tide, while that of seaward flow at two hours before the low tide. (4)The upstream boundary is deduced approximately to be 50km at spring tide and 44km at neap tide from the tidal velocity decreasing. the tidal influence area is estimated approximately to be 65km from the tidal amplitude damping.

  • The objective of this paper is to describe the optimization of design parameters in a large-sized commercial bus heater system by using CFD(computational fluid dynamics) analysis and Taguchi method. In order to obtain the best combination of each control factor which results in a desired performance of heater system, the parameter design of the Taguchi method is adopted for the robust design considering the dynamic characteristic. The research activity may be divided into four phases. The first one is analyzing the problem, i.e., ascertaining the influential factors. In the second phase the levels were set in such a way that their variation would significantly influence the response. In the third phase the experimental runs were designed. In the final phase the planned runs were carried out numerically to evaluate the optimal combination of factors which is able to provide the best response. In this study, eight factors were considered for the analysis: one with two level and seven with three level combinations comprising the $L_{18}(2^1{\times}3^7)$ orthogonal array. The results of this study can be summarized as follows ; (i)The optimum condition of control factor is a set of <$A_2\;B_1\;C_3\;D_3\;E_1\;F_2\;G_3\;H_2$> where A is shape of the outer fin, B is pitch of the outer fin, C is height of the outer fin, D is the inner fin number, E is the inner fin height, F is length of the flame guide, G is diameter of the heating element and H is clearance between air guide and heating element. (ii)The heat capacity of heated discharge air under the optimum condition satisfies the equation y=0.6M w here M is a signal factor. (iii)The warm-up rate improves about three times, more largely as com pared with the current condition, which results in about 9.2minutes reduction.

  • The field emission properties of GaN are reported in the present study. To be a good field emitter, it requires a low work function, high aspect ratio, and strong mechanical stability. In the case of GaN, it has a quite low work function (4.1eV) and strong chemical/mechanical/thermal stabilities. However, so far, it was difficult to fabricate vertical GaN nanostructures with a high aspect ratio. In this study, we successfully achieved vertically well aligned GaN nanostructures with chemical vapor-phase etching methods [1] (Fig. 1). In this method, we chemically etched the GaN film using hydrogen chloride and ammonia gases at high temperature around $900^{\circ}C$. This process effectively forms vertical nanostructures without patterning procedure. This favorable shape of GaN nanostructures for electron emitting results in excellent field emission properties such as a low turn-on field and long term stability. In addition, we observed a uniform fluorescence image from a phosphor film attached at the anode part. The turn-on field for the GaN nanostructures is found to be about $0.8V/{\mu}m$ at current density of $20{\mu}A$/cm^2. This value is even lower than that of typical carbon nanotubes ($1V/{\mu}m$). Moreover, threshold field is $1.8V/{\mu}m$ at current density of $1mA$/cm^2. The GaN nanostructures achieved a high current density within a small applied field range. We believe that our chemically etched vertical nanostructures are the promising structures for various field emitting devices.
