  • We investigated the combined moisturizing effect of liposomal serine and a cosmeceutical base selected in this study. Serine is a major amino acid consisting of natural moisturizing factors and keratin, and the hydroxyl group of serine can actively interact with water molecules. Therefore, we hypothesized that serine efficiently delivered to the stratum corneum (SC) of the skin would enhance the moisturizing capability of the skin. We prepared four different cosmeceutical bases (hydrogel, oil-in-water (O/W) essence, O/W cream, and water-in-oil (W/O) cream); their moisturizing abilities were then assessed using a $Corneometer^{(R)}$. The hydrogel was selected as the optimum base for skin moisturization based on the area under the moisture content change-time curves (AUMCC) values used as a parameter for the water hold capacity of the skin. Liposomal serine prepared by a reverse-phase evaporation method was then incorporated in the hydrogel. The liposomal serine-incorporated hydrogel (serine level=1%) showed an approximately 1.62~1.77 times greater moisturizing effect on the skin than those of hydrogel, hydrogel with serine (1%), and hydrogel with blank liposome. However, the AUMCC values were not dependent on the level of serine in liposomal serine-loaded hydrogels. Together, the delivery of serine to the SC of the skin is a promising strategy for moisturizing the skin. This study is expected to be an important step in developing highly effective moisturizing cosmeceutical products.

  • The marine biotechnology industry is very significant as compared to other industries as one of the driving forces for economic growth in the next generation in Korea. However, the marine biotechnology market has been considered as a component of the biotechnology industry market which made difficult for creating separate research areas in relation to the scope of the relevant industry market as well as making it difficult to establish its own R&D policy strategies. Accordingly, this study was executed to estimate the future long-term market value of the marine biotechnology within the limit of industrial field and to verify the importance of national R&D investment in marine biotechnology on the basis of estimations within the industrial perspective. To this end, we classified the marine biotechnology industry into the four sub-sectors and estimated the domestic and global industrial market in 2010 and 2024. According to the results, the domestic and global market of the marine biotechnology industry will see a remarkable growth by 2024. In particular, the bio-energy, pharmaceutical and functional foods industry markets will achieve astonishing advances. On the basis of the analysis results, Korea has to establish more progressive and aggressive R&D investment strategies to strengthen national competitiveness through the marine biotechnology industry.

  • Application of lactic acid bacteria in the markets are divided into four categories: dairy industry, health food industry, animal feed industry and pharmaceutical industries. Recently, Lactobacillus acidophilus have been used in the food industry and have obtained great attention as key cultures for health benefit. Since commercial application of L. acidophilus has become a common practice, characterization of these cultures were made. Futhermore, the strains selected should produce a final dairy product possessing good taste and acceptable body and texture, a selection step that cannot be achieved unless the product is actually manufactured. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) have been recognized as antioxidants, cancer inhibitors, cholesterol depressing agents, and growth promoting factors. Food products from ruminants, particularly dairy products, are the major dietary source of CLA f3r humans. The CLA content in yogurt or cheese can be increased by action of the starter cultures. The finding of the production of CLA by food starter culture opens interesting perspectives far the future in producing fermented products enriched in CLA.

  • The germination of Lactuca sativa seeds was significantly inhibited by the water extract of the fresh leaves of Pulsatilla koreana N. including abundant ranunculin. Germination inhibitory activity increased in a dose-dependantly. Protoanemonin, produced from ranunculin by enzymatic action during maceration process of leaves, was proved to be the active principle with inhibitory activity was above 90% at concentration of 1 mg/ml.

• In Japan, rapid development of economy during the 1960s caused the problems of environmental pollution, and hazards occurred in many places of Japan, water pollution had increased in those days, and water used for drinking, agriculture, fishing, industry nd recreation were demaged. By water-born diseases like as Minamata and Itai-Itai diseases, many patients suffered as you know well. In 1967, Japanese Government set up Basic Law for Environmental Pollution Control and in 1970 Water Pollution Control and in 1970 Water Pollution Control Law.

  • Quorum sensing, a gene expression in response to population density, is regulated by chemical signals, most of which are acylated homoserine lactones (AHLs). The AHL derivatives have been reported to regulate bioluminescence, virulence factors and / or swarming motility in bacteria. It is hypothesized that higher organisms may have evolved specific means to interfere with bacterial communication as exemplified in the AHL-antagonistic activity of halogenated furanones isolated from the Australian macroalga Delisea pulchra. • By means of numerous examples the practical possibility is demonstrated, which HPLC offers at the quality control of Ginseng-preparations. The method is not only suitable for quali-quantitative evaluation of finished products, but also for in-process controls at production of Ginseng specialities. From the examination of various German products which are on the European market, it results, that the contents of Ginsenosides fluctuate strongly. The mechanisms are shown, which could cause destruction of the Ginsenosides at the processing of Ginseng roots. The guiding principles for the production of standardized Ginseng preparations are defined.
