Investigation of dry dog food market trends and valuation of carbohydrate sources for dog diets

  • Plant-based, grain-free, and gluten-free diets have been the focus of recent research, as part of the premiumization trend in dog food. However, the lack of comprehensive information regarding carbohydrates in dog food makes it difficult to produce nutritionally balanced meals. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the nutritional value of carbohydrate ingredients commonly used in commercial dog foods. First, using data from Euromonitor, we investigated the trends in the dry dog food industry and analyzed the annual volume of dry dog food sales, as well as the dog population from 2010 to 2021 in Korea. The growth of the market was greatest in 2021, when the total value of sales of premium dry dog food was 254.3 billion KRW (Korean won) more than in 2010. In addition, sales of dry dog food by age category were marked by a significant increase (404.8%) in the market for dry food for senior dogs. Second, we examined the frequency of carbohydrate ingredients used in dry dog food and conducted a proximate analysis of the top 10 most frequently used ingredients. Subsequently, we analyzed the crude protein, crude fat, and nitrogen-free extract in the carbohydrate ingredients based on dry matter (DM) and calculated the ratio of metabolic energy content supplied from each nutrient in the carbohydrate ingredients. The ratio of metabolic energy content in the carbohydrate ingredients indicated that mung beans had the highest crude protein content (31.3%), whereas oats exhibited the highest crude fat content (23.3%). Sweet potatoes had the highest nitrogen-free extract content, measuring at 93.6%. The results of this study are expected to provide a valuable foundation for the growth and development of the domestic dog food industry, while also contributing to a deeper understanding of the specific role of each ingredient as a carbohydrate source.

  • In Korea, stray cats across the country have been rapidly increasing the number of population. Also, the number of pet cats have been gradually expending. In America and Eastern Europe, cat population has been shown considerable growth compared to dog's one. Also, cat clients in Germany have been going ahead the dog's one. In these reasons, the potential to the transmission of main infections in stray cats has been focusing the one of the interesting topics in veterinary pathology and epidemiology. (omitted)

화학발광 반응을 이용한 세탁조건별 반려동물 오구 제거효과 연구 (A Study on the Pet Soil Removal Effect of Washing Conditions Using a Chemiluminescence Reaction)

  • In this study, we used a chemiluminescence reaction to investigate the removal effect of pet soil, such as dog blood, urine and feces. The soiled fabrics were washed with a standard laundry course of 30℃ and a washing time of 30 min and a pet care laundry course of 40-60℃ and a washing time of 100 min. The detergency was evaluated by the surface reflectance and chemiluminescence reaction (bloodstain detection by luminol test and urine-stain and feces-stain detection by UV blacklight test) before and after washing. The surface reflectance results did not show any difference in detergency for both courses, whereas the chemiluminescence reaction did. The detergency of the pet care course compared to the standard course was 101% according to the surface reflectance and 120% according to the chemiluminescence reaction. Therefore, residual stains not detected by surface reflectance can be evaluated through chemiluminescence reaction, and it was confirmed that pet stains can be managed more hygienically by washing for a long time at a high temperature.

대전광역시 애완견의 장내기생충 감염실태조사 (Prevalence of intestinal parasites of pet dogs in Taejon city)

  • In order to survey the prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs, 304 fecal samples were taken from dogs in Taejon city, The prevalence and identification of intestinal parasites were determined by the fecal examinations using sheather's floating technique and sedimentation methods and then Cryptosporidium oocysts were identified by kinyoun's modified acid fast stainning method. The results were obtained as follows ; 1. Parasite eggs and oocysts were detected in 105 samples (34.5%) from 304 cases of dog feces. 2. The 11 kinds of eggs and oocysts were isolated from the feces of dog. Those were Ancylostoma caninum (12.1%, 37 dogs), Trichuris vulpis (11.5%, 35 dogs), Toxocara canis (10.2%, 31 dogs), Isospora sp (7.2%, 22 dogs), Cryptosporidium sp (3.6%, 11 dogs), Toxascaris leonine (1.9%, 6 dogs), Strongyloides sp (1.9%, 6 dogs), Taenia sp (0.6%, 2 dogs), Diphylidium caninum (0.3%, 1 dog), Spirometra sp (0.3%, 1 dog) and Clonorchis sinensis (0.3%, 1 dog). 3. It was mixed infection such as single, double, triple and quadruple, 64.8%, 25.7%, 8.6% and 0.9%, respectively. 4. In indiviually-raised 4095, the infectious late of T canis (11.4%), A Caninum(13.2%), Cryptosporidium sp (6.1%), T leontna (2.6%) were higher than those of group raised dogs. But the infectious rate of T vulpis (12.1%) in group raised dogs was higher than that of individually-raised dogs. 5. Adults of Demodex and Sarcoptes which have been found in this survey are excluded in this report.

Balloon dilatation in a chow chow dog with Cor triatriatum dexter

  • A 3-year-old chow chow dog with abdominal distention was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. The dog was diagnosed as Cor triatriatum dexter based on echocardiographic results, which demonstrated an abnormal membrane partitioning the right atrium. Echocardiography also revealed turbulent intra-atrial blood flow between the two chambers of the atrium. The dog was treated with balloon dilatation to enlarge the perforation in the abnormal membrane and to improve blood flow. As a result, although the membrane remained, increased perforation reduced the turbulent intra-atrial blood flow. Clinically the patient improved and eventually was discharged. This case is the first domestic Korean clinical veterinary report on the use of balloon valvuloplasty to treat Cor triatriatum dexter in a dog.

화학적 친수성 처리율에 따른 재생 PET 섬유와 시멘트 복합재료와의 계면 인발 특성 (Interfacial Pullout Characteristics of Recycled PET Fiber With Hydrophilic Chemical Treatments in Cement Based Composites)

  • 본 논문은 재생 PET 섬유와 시멘트 복합재료와의 부착 성능을 향상시키고자 친수성 물질인 무수말레인산이 그라프트된 폴리프로필렌을 이용하여 친수성 처리 효과를 평가하였다. 실험 변수는 무수말레인산이 그라프트된 폴리프로필렌의 농도 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% 및 20%를 고려하였다. 부착 실험은 ICI SF-8에 따라 dog bone 공시체를 이용하였으며 부착강도 및 인발 에너지를 평가하였다. 실험 결과 부착 거동, 부착강도 및 계면 인성은 무수말레인산의 농도가 증가할수록 증가하는 효과를 보여주었다. 특히 15%에서 가장 큰 효과를 발휘하였으며 농도가 20%가 되면 오히려 부착성능이 감소하였다. 이는 재생 PET 섬유의 표면은 무수말레인산이 그라프트된 폴리프로필렌의 농도가 15% 이상이 되면 전체적으로 완벽하게 코팅이 가능하나 20% 코팅시에는 코팅 부분에서 부분적으로 균열이 발생하여 이를 통하여 부착하중 작용시 균열 부분을 통한 파괴가 발생하기 때문이다. 섬유 표면의 미소 구조 관찰에서 무수말레인산의 농도에 따른 재생 PET 섬유와 시멘트 복합재료와의 부착력 향상 메커니즘을 확인할 수 있다.

한국의 개 심장사상충 유병율에 대한 메타분석 (Meta-analysis of the Prevalence of Canine Heartworm Infection in Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 개 심장사상충을 관리하기 위한 기초연구 자료를 확보하기 위하여 1996-2007년 동안 국내에서 발표된 논문 중 총 14편 (자충검사 1,790건, 성충에 대한 ELISA 항원검사 3,277건)의 자료에 근거하여 주요 위험 요인별 자충과 성충의 항원검사에 의한 유병율을 추정하였다. 자료분석을 위하여 일반견 (pet dog)과 군견 (military dog)을 별도로 분석하였다. 일반견에서 현성유병율은 자충검사 11.7% (183/1,563), 항원검사 16.5% (379/2,302)로 항원검사에서 유의하게 높았으나 (p < 0.001) 두 검사 모두 성별에 따른 유병율의 차이는 없었다. 2000년 이전과 비교할 때 2000년 이후 자충검사와 항원검사에 의한 유병율은 2.5%에서 13.1%, 9.9%에서 20.3%로 각각 증가하였다 (p < 0.001). 항원검사에 의한 유병율은 2세 이하 5.0% (n = 701), 2세 이상 20.7% (n = 1,003)로 연령이 증가함에 따라 유병율이 증가하는 경향을 보였으며 (p < 0.001), 실외견 (37.9%)이 실내견 (3.4%)에 비하여 유병율이 유의하게 높았다. 한편 군견의 경우 유병율은 자충검사 38.3% (87/227), 항원검사 38.5% (375/975)로 일반견에 비하여 유의하게 높았으며 (p < 0.001), 잠복감염율은 일반견 37.5%, 군견 66.7%로 나타났다.

  • The Jindo is a Korean native dog, well-known for its hunting and guarding abilities. When he gives his devotion to one individual, he gives it whole-heartedly. He is not tempted easily and impetuous. The breed was not developed. but the dog retained their original qualities -loyal, alert, fearless, obedient, watchful, intelligent, energetic- to survive in the harsh environment of the Jindo island. The dog had been spread over the entire Korean peninsula from the time unknown, and the ones in the Jindo island, isolated until lately, survived and maintained their original characteristics. They are now spread over the entire Jindo County consisted of many islands, whence the breed name came. The Jindo comes in a variety of colors and color combinations, with the fawn and white colorings predominant. The dog is one of the Korean natural monuments, protected by law since early 1960s. The Jindo gained official approval by the Federation Cynologique Internationale as a hunting dog. Apart from the basic housetraining, the dog rarely gets training. Many people have attempted to preserve its pure bloodlines and original qualities. Today, there are a total of 10,356 Jindoes being raised over the entire Jindo County, and many more are kept elsewhere. A research into genetic characteristics of the Jindo is now going on, using the technique of isozyme electrophoresis. The Jindo Dog Breeding Management Center has been reinforced lately, and in addition to their routines, the Center is to work on the breeding of the Jindo. Efforts should be made in the future to produce stable, trustworthy Jindoes according to their proposed use and to modify their temperament in order to make it more widely acceptable as a pet and companion dog in the strangers home.
