A Study on Metal Concentrations in the Air of Metal Products Manufacturing Industry (금속제품 제조 산업장내 공기중 금속농도에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted for the purpose of obtaining the fundamental data on improvement of working environment and contributing to health improvement of workers who dealed with metal by assessing the metal concentration in air of industries located in Chang-Won Industrial Complex. Authors measured the concentration of metals(Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn and Zn) is the air to 25 working processes of 73 industries by flame atomic absorption spectrometry from February to December 1994. Personal air sampler was used for air sampling with mixed cellulose-ester membrane filter. The results were as follows : 1. The geometric means(range) of metal concentration; 1) Al: $0.1505mg/m^3$ ($0.0147-18.6100mg/m^3$) 2) Cd: $0.0077mg/m^3$ ($0.0003-7.0710mg/m^3$) 3) Cr: $0.0163mg/m^3$ ($0.0013-1.1510mg/m^3$) 4) Cu: $0.0097mg/m^3$ ($0.0009-0.4950mg/m^3$) 5) Mn: $0.0412mg/m^3$ ($0.0006-4.7877mg/m^3$) 6) Ni: $0.0088mg/m^3$ ($0.0001-1.0170mg/m^3$) 7) Pb: $0.0152mg/m^3$ ($0.0015-0.4499mg/m^3$) 8) Sn: $0.0486mg/m^3$ ($0.0037-0.1500mg/m^3$) 9) Zn: $0.1911mg/m^3$ ($0.0122-8.2920mg/m^3$) 2. The geometric mean of lead exceeded TWA in assembling process of other general purpose machinery not elsewhere classified products manufacturing industries.

  • Asymmetrical and unbalanced features such as rotor blade of helicopter, actuator of hard-disk in personal computer are usually manufactured with composite materials. In this case, mass distributions and center of gravity of the parts are important because of their static balancing. Therefore in the manufacturing processes, it is needed to check out the exact data of weight and gravity center. In this study, it has been studied experimentally the balancing of laminated rotor blade by using multiple-point weighing method and lab-view system.

A Case Study of International Design-Engineering Collaborative Design Project Course (디자인-공학 국제 협업설계 교육의 사례 연구)

  • This paper is about a case study of an interdisciplinary and intercultural collaborative design project course that has been offered for six years. The distinct characteristics of this course lie in that its students consist of those in two different disciplines, mechanical engineering and industrial design, and also in two different countries, Korea and Germany. The themes of the design project have been selected differently over the years, but always were related to transportation and, particularly, personal mobility devices. The paper first delineates the course and illustrates examples of the outcomes. Then, unique aspects and challenges of the course that have been observed through the six runs and that are associated with the intercultural and interdisciplinary nature are indicated and discussed. The author is convinced that this course has been successful in helping prepare the students for globally-operating manufacturing companies in the future. It is hoped that the findings from this course and the discussions contained in this paper would help those who plan to offer similar courses.

  • Among the optimization method, GA (genetic algorithm) is a very powerful searching method enough to compete with design sensitivity analysis method. GA is very easy to apply, since it dose not require any design sensitivity information. However, GA has been computationally not efficient due to huge repetitive computation. In this study, parallel computation is adopted to Improve computational efficiency, Paralleled GA is introduced on a clustered LINUX based personal computer system.

  • To obtain the ultra-sharp tungsten tip, an analog to digital converter circuit aided by a personal computer has been setup. At the moment the lower part of the needle drops off during the etching process, a maximum current change across the reference resistor is detected by the PC interface card and the applied voltage is then cut off within a few milliseconds. Out experiment has been able to fabricate an ultra-sharp tungsten tip ~200 $\AA$ radius with a higher reproduction rate and reliability than the conventional method.

Service Quality Improvement and the Effective Use of Women Employees in Korean Service Industries (서비스산업의 품질향상과 여성인력의 활용에 관한 연구)

  • This study examines the service quality management and the use of women employees for the productivity improvement in Korean service industry. Five service industries, bank, hotel, PCS(Personal Communication Service), department store, and hospital industry were chosen for this study. The results indicate that the five industries show different characteristics. It was found that department stores made the most effort to improve service quality among the five industries and that hospitals did the least effort. In the use of women employees, the proportion of women in service industry is much higher than that in the manufacturing industry, but the proportion of women in management level is still very low. Women employees do not feel high degree of sexual discrimination. But they feel unfairness in promotion and payment, and low degree of job satisfaction.

  • This paper describes the evaluation of a robot based filament winding cell consisting of an industrial robot (ASEA IRB 6/2) and an in-house fabricated mandrel drive mechanism, both being coordinated by a personal computer. As in many manufacturing processes, tradeoffs exist between accuracy and speed. The accuracy versus speed relationships of the robotic winding cell were experimentally determined for discrete, fine and medium movement modes while traversing a segmented delivery eye path for a cylindrical mandrel in three configurations (in-line, offset and angled with respect to the axis of rotation). the results show that the robot winding cell is appropriate for very accurate winding of fibre strands if the mandrel axis is concentric with the mandrel drive axis and the discrete mode(i.e. low speed) of the robot is used.

Development of DNA Chip Microarrayer

  • A microarrayer system was developed mainly for manufacturing DNA chips. The 3-axis robot was designed to automatically collect samples from 96-or 384-well microtiter plates using up to 16 simultaneously moving pens and to deposit them on a surface-modified slide glass. This is followed by a wash/dry operation in a clean station. The cycle is repeated with a new set of samples, This system can deposit cDNA or oligonucleotides with spot intervals of $150{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ and the spot size of $80\mu\textrm{m}$, thus allowing a high density DNA chip containing about 5,000 spots per $\textrm{cm}^2$. The entire procedure is controlled by the Visual C++ program that was written in our laboratory by using a personal computer with Pentium 100 CPU.

  • This paper is aimed at investigating the influence of the fit between PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) driven mobile technology and tasks on performance. Our research motive was adopted from the burgeoning mobile technology which can be easily observed in modem management. Fit theory has been widely applied to proved the relationship between technology and tasks. However, there are few studies about the fit between mobile technology and tasks. A the advent of the IT, mobile technology started to affect individuals' lifestyle as well as the management style of firms. For the purpose of proving those hypotheses, we collected 173 questionnaires from 20 firms such as manufacturing industry, financial business, service company, telecommunication company which deem using the PDA technology for their management. We applied factor analysis and path analysis for our experiments Results revealed that the mobile technology holds a statistically significant fit with tasks and Individual characteristics.

  • In order to collect the engine performance data and determine optimum engine conditions, engine performance test based on interface unit were tested This paper was carried out that engine' performance was developed using interface unit between personal computer and diesel engine. The results of the study are summarized as follows: Interface unit was developed. By using PAL, simulation was carried in order to logic's inspection. From this tea NO$_{x}$ were decreased, otherwise PM were increased. By using EGR system PM were increased by twice in the high load ranges, it was not seen to come into effect in the low load ranges. This system was tested D-l3 mode, the results were decreased more than 50% in the NO$_{x}$ emission.
