  • Recently, more attention has been paid to the development of high-speed permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motors, since they are conductive to high efficiency, high power density, small size, and low weight. In high-speed PM machines, core loss and windage loss form a larger proportion of the total losses than usual in conventional mid- or low speed machines. This article deals with the analysis on the core loss and windage loss in PM synchronous motor for high-speed application. Using the data information from a manufacturer and non-linear curve fitting, this paper investigates the magnetic behavior and its core losses in the stator core using the electrical steels. And, the windage loss is calculated according to the variation of the rotational speed, motor inner pressure and temperature.

  • The permanent magnet(PM) overhang effect has been generally used to enhance the linkage flux in the motor. In this paper, we quantitatively investigate the PM overhang effect in the new type axial flux permanent magnet(AFPM) motor with a double-sided airgap. The motor performances such as linkage flux, back electromotive force(EMF), magnetic force, etc. were analyzed according to the variation of the overhang angle. From the results, we can select the proper overhang angle of PM which improves the performance of the AFPM motor.

  • This paper introduces the application of a SUI PID controller for permanent magnet (PM) drive systems. The drive system model is developed via FO control. Simulation of the system is carried out to predict the performance at no load and under load. The results and comparisons indicate that application of a SUI PID controller is effective for sensorless PM drive systems.

  • This paper is proposed maximum thrust design of slotted permanent magnet linear synchronous motor(PMLSM) using surface harmonic method(SHM) considering slot effect. The genetic a1gorithm is used for optimization. The functional are selected the maximum thrust and the minimum detent force. This time. design parameters are set as permanent magnet(PM) width. PM height and slot width. Thrust is increased from 272[N] to 295[N] and detent force is decreased from 5[N] to 2.43[N] greatly in optimum design. Therefore, thrust ripple isn't generating almost. Also, the results of 2D EMC considering slot-effect are compared with ones of experimental and finite element analysis..

  • The torque characteristics of permanent magnet(PM) motor is varied according to magnet width. In this paper, the design method of magnet and magnetic circuit is proposed in order to improve the torque of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM). This paper presents the effects of pole arc ratio and salient pole ratio on the torque and torque ripple in the IPMSM with concentrated winding.

  • The following study carried out the characteristic analysis based on the magnet segment of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) for the urban railway vehicles. IPMSM affects the electromagnetic characteristics through the change in magnetic flux based on the rotor structure, and significantly influences the structural features through the change of pressure. Therefore, satisfied by the demanded traction force of the IPMSM, magnet segment derived three different model types. The 1-segment PM model consisted an undivided permanent magnet. The 2-Bridge model consisted a divided permanent magnet with the application of Bridge. The 3-Bridge model consisted additional dividing with one more Bridge applied. The electromagnetic characteristics of the three models were compared and analyzed along with the structural features regarding the scattering of permanent magnet based on strong centrifugal force from the rotation of the rotor at high speed. In conclusion, the final model with electromagnetic characteristics and structural features most suitable of IPMSM for the urban railway vehicles was derived, and the effectiveness was verified through the characteristic experiments after the production of the derived model.

  • The active magnetic bearing has many advantages - an active positioning, no contact and lubrication free motion - and is widely used in high precision motion stages. But, the conventional magnetic bearings composed of electromagnets only are power consuming due to their bias current and have the excessive heat generation, which can make the repeatability of the positioning system worse. To overcome this drawback, we developed a novel permanent magnet (PM) biased linear magnetic bearing for a high precision magnetically levitated stage. The permanent magnets provide a bias flux and generate a bias force, and the electromagnet increases or reduces a flux of the permanent magnets and gives a levitation force. This paper presents a theoretical magnetic circuit analysis, FEM analysis and experimental data from the 1-DOF tests, and compares the theoretical power consumption of the electromagnetic bearings and the PM biased linear magnetic bearings. The PM biased linear magnetic bearing presented in this paper gives better load capacity but lower power consumption than a conventional electromagnetic bearing and will be adopted in our 6-DOF high precision linear positioning maglev stage.

  • A navigation sensor system for outdoor AGV(Automatic Guided Vehicle) using AMR(Anisotropic Magnetoresitive) sensors is described. We derive a formula of the position of AMR sensor using the measured magnetic field intensity due to permanent magnet with constant distance. The system consists of sensor board. sensor control board and position processing board. The sensor board measures magnetic field intensity, the sensor control board controls the measurement of six sensors sequentially, and the position processing board computes the accurate position of the permanent magnet using Least Square Method. We arranged six sensors at intervals of 30cm and measured the position of the permanent magnet moving at intervals of 30cm. Experimental results showed that we can get standard deviation of 2mm and error of &\pm&4.5mm at a height of 20cm from the permanent magnet.

  • Generally, the discontinuous armature permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PM-LSM) is composed by the stator block (accelerator, re-accelerator, and decelerator) and the free running section. However, the stationary discontinuous armature design involves the velocity variation of the mover during drive when the armature's non-installation part changes over to installation part as a result of the outlet edge of the armature. Therefore, we considered deforming the shape of the outlet edge at the armature and apply skew on the permanent magnet by displacing the two magnet segments of each pole. This paper presents the results of a three-dimensional (3-D) numerical analysis with a finite element method (FEM) of the force exerted by the outlet edge.

  • This paper presents the optimal permanent magnet shape on the rotor of an interior permanent magnet motor to reduce the core losses and improve the performance. As permanent magnet has conductivity inherently, it causes huge amount of eddy current losses by the slot harmonics with concentrated winding. This loss is roughly 100 times larger than that of distributed winding in high speed operation and it cannot be ignored, especially on traction motors. Each eddy current loss on permanent magnet has been investigated in detail by using FEM(Finite Element Method) instead of EMCNM(Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network Method) in order to consider saturation and non-linear magnetic property. Simulation-based DOE(Design Of Experiment) is also applied to avoid large number of analyses according to each design parameter and consider expected interactions among parameters. Consequently, the optimal design to reduce the core loss on the permanent magnet while maintaining or improving motor performance is proposed by an optimization algorithm using regression equation derived and lastly, the core loss reduction on the proposed shape of the permanent magnet is verified by FEM.
