This paper presents performance evaluation of real-time mechanisms for real-time embedded linux. First, we presents process for implementing open-source real-time embedded linux namely RTAI and Xenomai. These are real-time extensions to linux kernel and we implemented real-time embedded linux over the latest linux kernel. Measurements of executions of real-time mechanisms for each distribution are performed to give a quantitative comparison. Performance evaluations are conducted in kernel space about repeatability of periodic task, response time of Semaphore, FIFO, Mailbox and Message queue in terms of inter-task communication for each distribution. These rules can be helpful for deciding which real-time linux extension should be used with respect to the requirements of the real-time applications.
Geometric imperfections have an important influence on the buckling response of structural components. This paper describes an experimental technique for determining imperfections in long (5.7 m) structural members using a series of overlapping measurements. Measurements were performed on 31 austenitic stainless steel sections formed from three different production routes: hot-rolling, cold-rolling and press-braking. Spectral analysis was carried out on the imperfections to obtain information on the periodic nature of the profiles. Two series were used to model the profile firstly the orthogonal cosine and sine functions in a classic Fourier transform and secondly a half sine series. Results were compared to the relevant tolerance standards. Simple predictive tools for both local and global imperfections have been developed to enable representative geometric imperfections to be incorporated into numerical models and design methods.
In this paper, a real-time communication method using a PICNET-NP(Plant Instrumentation and Control Network for Nuclear Power plant) is proposed with an analysis of the control network requirements of DCS (Distributed Control System) in nuclear power plants. The method satisfies deadline in case of worst data traffics by considering aperiodic and periodic real-time data and others. In addition, the method was used to analyze the data characteristics of the DCS in existing nuclear power plant. The result shows that use of this method meets the response time requirement(100ms)

The aeroelastic analysis of rotor blades with trailing edge flaps, focused on reducing vibration while minimizing control effort, are investigated using large deflection-type beam theory in forward flight. The rotor blade aerodynamic forces are calculated using two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory. For the analysis of forward flight, the nonlinear periodic blade steady response is obtained by integrating the full finite element equation in time through a coupled trim procedure with a vehicle trim. The objective function, which includes vibratory hub loads and active flap control inputs, is minimized by an optimal control process. Numerical simulations are performed for the steady-state forward flight of various advance ratios. Also, numerical results of the steady blade and flap deflections, and the vibratory hub loads are presented for various advance ratios and are compared with the previously published analysis results obtained from modal analysis based on a moderate deflection-type beam theory.

Dynamics of a rotating cantilever beam near its critical angular speed is investigated in this paper. The external, force is idealized as a periodic function which has the same period as the rotati ng frequency of the beam. The equations of motion are derived and transformed into a dimensionless form. A prescribed spin-up motion is employed for the rotating motion. Numerical study shows that the steady state and the transient responses of the beam are affected by the spin-up time constant and there exists a time constant at which the maximum transient response becomes minimum.

Measurement techniques for the in-duct source characteristics of fluid machines can be classified into direct method and load method, according to whether the technique employs an external acoustic source or not. It has been known that the two methods yield different results and the load method used to come up with a negative source resistance, in spite of the fact that a very accurate prediction of radiated noise can be obtained by using any result. This paper is focused to the effect of time-varying nature of fluid machines on the output result. For this purpose, a simplified fluid machine consisting of a reservoir, a valve and a pipe is considered as representing a typical linear, periodic, time-varying system and the measurement techniques are simulated by utilizing the Hill equation and its steady-state forced response. In the load method, the source impedance turns out being dependent on the valve impedance at the calculation frequency and the valve and load impedances at other frequencies as well.

Tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM) utilizes the dynamic response of a resonating probe tip as it approaches and retracts from a sample to measure the topography and material properties of a nanostructure. We present recent results based on numerical techniques that yield new perspectives and insight into AFM. It is compared that the dynamic models including van der Waals and Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov(DMT) or Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR) contact forces demonstrates that periodic solutions can be represented with respect to the approach distance and excitation frequency.

Tapping mode atomic force microscopy (TM-AFM) utilizes the dynamic response of a resonating probe tip as it approaches and retracts from a sample to measure the topography and material properties of a nanostructure. We present recent results based on nonlinear dynamical systems theory, computational continuation techniques and detailed experiments that yield new perspectives and insight into AFM. A dynamic model including van der Waals and Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) contact forces demonstrates that periodic solutions can be represented with respect to the approach distance and excitation frequency. Turning points on the surface lead to hysteretic amplitude jumps as the tip nears/retracts from the sample. Experiments are performed using a tapping mode tip on a graphite sample to verify the predictions.
Request oriented sensor networks have stricter requirements than conventional event-driven or periodic report models. Therefore, in this paper we propose a minimum energy data aggregation (MEDA), which meets the requirements for request oriented sensor networks by exploiting a low power real-time scheduler, on-demand time synchronization, variable response frame structure, and adaptive retransmission. In addition we introduce a test bed consisting of a number of MEDA prototypes, which support near real-time bidirectional sensor networks. The experimental results also demonstrate that the MEDA guarantees deterministic aggregation time, enables minimum energy operation, and provides a reliable data aggregation service.

In contrast of external excitations, parametric excitations can produce a large response when the excitation frequency is away from the linear natural frequencies. The Mathieu equation is the simplest differential equation with periodic coefficients, which lead to the parametric excitation. The Mathieu equation may have the unbounded solutions. This work conducted the stability analysis for the Mathieu equation, using Floquet theory and numerical method. Using Lindstedt's perturbation method, harmonic solutions of the Mathieu equation and transition curves separating stable from unstable motions were obtained. Using Floquet theory with numerical method, stable and unstable regions were calculated. The numerical method had the same transition curves as the perturbation method. Increased stable regions due to the inclusion of damping were calculated.
