  • An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a MS (multiple scales) procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. The proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated with the nonlinear rotating machine system as an example of large mechanical structure systems. In addition, its efficiency for nonlinear response prediction will be shown by comparison of other conventional methods.

  • Vibration beat phenomenon is theoretically investigated on a slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell, which is a simplified model of Korean bell. Mode pairs of the slightly asymmetric shell are obtained by receptance analysis and impulse response of the shell is derived using modal expansion and Laplace transform. Based on the impulse response model, beat mapping method is proposed to explain the reason that the beat of a bell vibration shows periodic distribution on the circumference. Beat characteristics of King Song-Dok Bell are explained in detail using the beat map and the measured modal data.

  • The results are summarized as what follows: 1) The modeling of thin beams, which is a continuous system, into a two DOF system yields satisfactory results for the chaotic vibrations. 2) The concept of "natural forcing function" derived from the eigenfunction of the bifurcation mode is very useful for the natural responses of the system. 3) Among the perturbation techniques, HBM is a good estimate for the response when the geometry of motion is known. 4) It is known that there exist periodic solutions of coupled mode response for somewhat large damping and forcing amplitude, as well as weak damping and forcing. 5) The route-to-chaos related with lateral instability in thin beams is composed of period-doubling and quasiperiodic process and finally follows discontinuous period-doubling process. 6) The chaotic vibrations are verified by using Poincare maps, FFT's, time responses, trajectories in the configuration space, and the very powerful technique Lyapunov characteristics exponents.exponents.

  • This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize shape of streamwise periodic ribs mounted on both of the principal walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel flow. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique. The optimization is based on Navier-Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The width-to-height ratio of a rib, rib height-to-channel height ratio and rib pitch to rib height ratio are chosen as design variables. The object function is defined as a function of heat transfer coefficient and friction drag coefficient with weighting factor. Optimum shapes of the rib have been obtained for the range of 0.02 to 0.1 of weighting factor.

  • In this study, a numerical optimization to find the optimal shape of streamwise periodic ribs mounted on both of the principal walls is performed to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The optimization is based on Navier-Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and is implemented using response surface method. The width-to-height ratio of a rib, rib height-to-channel height ratio, rib pitch to rib height ratio and distance between opposite ribs to rib height ratio are chosen as design variables. The object function is defined as a function of heat transfer coefficient and friction drag coefficient with weighting factor. Optimum shapes of the rib have been investigated for the range of 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.

  • We report on a high speed flexible display based on a deformed helix ferroelectric liquid crystal (DHFLC) in a vertically aligned configuration. The mechanical stability of the flexible DHFLC display was achieved using a periodic array of columnar spacers formed directly on the top sides of in-plane electrodes by the photolithography technique. Several unique features of display performances such as flexibility, uniform alignment, fast response, and gray scale capability were obtained.

  • For modeling the non-periodic and randomly scattered powder particles, the quasi-random multi-particle array is introduced. The multi-scale process simulation, which enables to formulate a regression model with a response surface method, is performed by employing a homogenization method. The size of ${Al_2}{O_3}$ particle, amplitude of cyclic compaction pressure, and friction coefficient are considered as optimal process parameters. The optimal conditions of process parameters providing the highest relative density are finally found by using the grid search method.

  • The dynamic instability for snapping phenomena has been studied by many researchers. Few paper deal with the dynamic bucking under the load with periodic characteristics, and the behavior under periodic excitation is expected the different behavior against STEP excitation. We investigate the fundamental mechanisms of dynamic instability when shallow EP(Elliptic Paraboliodal) shell of two degree of freedom are subjected to sinusoidal excitation with direct snapping and indirect snapping. By using Newmark-$\beta$ method, we can get the nonlinear response, and characteristics of the dynamic instability through the running response spectrum by FFT(fast Fourier Transform) and attractors are compared in the phase plane. Dynamic buckling loads are strongly influenced by the relationships between the natural frequency of structures and the dominant frequency of incident excitations.

  • Due to the rapid development of wireless communication technology, demands on data services in mobile computing environment are gradually increasing. In mobile computing environments, a mobile host began to use cache to overcome the weak point. Caching at mobile host could reduce the bandwidth consumption and query response time, but mobile host must maintain cache consistency. In this paper, we propose a cache consistency strategy to consider the period of data usage. The server allows an effective broadcasting by classifying data into two groups of periodic and non-periodic. By classifying the data, it prevent from elimination of cache after disconnection of periodic data by using expired time. By storing IR(Invalidation Report) messages, this scheme divides cached data by selection after disconnection. Consequently, we have shown much improvement in total consumption of bandwidth than the conventional scheme.

  • The main goal of periodontal treatment is the long-term maintenance of teeth. Periodic maintenance program is need to prevent periodontal disease and maintain healthy periodontium. Hirschfeld and Wasserman(1978) studied 600 treated periodontal patients. This study categorized periodontal patients using well-maintained, downhill, extreme downhill groups. The purpose of our study is to evaluate effect of periodontal treatment and analyse tooth loss after periodontal treatment using this classification. The study population of j9 patients had been treated and maintained for mean 5.8 years. All patients were on a periodic maintenance program at 2-, 3-, 4, or 6-month intends. The avenge age of the patients at the time of original therapy was 49.6 years. To analyse tooth loss, modified classification was used on the basis of response to therapy using by Hirschfeld and Wasserman in 1978. The results were as follows : 1. 59 treated patients were lost mean 1.42 teeth per patient for 5.8 years of maintenance period. 2. Maxillary first molars were most frequently lost but mandibular lateral incisors were lost no tooth during maintenance period. 3. Tooth mortality received surgical treatment had similar to received nonsurgical treatment. 4. Tooth loss was more frequent in maxillary teeth than mandibular teeth, and posterior teeth than anterior teeth, and more frequent tendency in male than female.
