  • Large-eddy simulation has been conducted to simulate turbulent boundary-layer flows over an array of regularly distributed obstacles considering various cases of a wind incident angle. The effect of wind direction was investigated in the square cube array that periodic boundary condition was imposed. Characteristics of the turbulent flow over the obstacle array have been found to be very sensitive to the direction of prevailing wind or of mean wind or of mean pressure gradient but varied with height, specially below the urban canopy. Turbulent statistics are changed sensitively with the direction of mean pressure gradient around 10 degree.

  • This paper examines the feasibility of using periodically varying dielectric layers with dielectric constant ${\epsilon}_1$ and ${\epsilon}_2$ at millimeter wave frequency for implementing the frequency-selective reflectors that permit feed separation in large aperture reflecting antenna systems. For oblique incidence, it is found that the total reflection can be obtained at different frequencies for proper choices of ${\epsilon}_1$, ${\epsilon}_2$ and the geometric parameters. In the frequency-selective reflector designed, the bandwidth for 90% reflection is always found to be much narrower than that for 90% transmission.

  • A significant enhancement of the magneto-optical Faraday rotation and extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) in the cascaded double-fishnet (CDF) structure with periodic rectangular apertures is theoretically predicted by using the extended finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The results demonstrate that the transmittance spectrum of the CDF structure has two EOT resonant peaks in a broad spectrum spanning visible to near-infrared wavebands, one of them coinciding with the enhanced Faraday rotation and large figure of merit (FOM) at the same wavelength. It is most important that the resonant position and intensity of the transmittance, Faraday rotation and FOM can be simply tailored by adjusting the incident wavelength, the thickness of the magnetic layer, and the offset between two metallic rectangular apertures, etc. Furthermore, the intrinsic physical mechanism of the resonance characteristics of the transmittance and Faraday rotation is thoroughly studied by investigating the electromagnetic field distributions at the location of resonance. It is shown that the transmittance resonance is mainly determined by different hybrid modes of surface plasmons (SPs) and plasmonic electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) behavior, and the enhancement of Faraday rotation is mostly governed by the plasmonic electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) behavior and the conversion of the transverse magnetic (TM) mode and transverse electric (TE) mode in the magnetic dielectric layer.

  • Heat transfer data are presented which describe characteristics of the transitional thermal boundary layers on the NACA0012 airfoil with upstream wakes. The wakes are generated periodically by circular cylindrical rods which rotate around the airfoil like a squirrel cage. The unsteady wakes simulate those produced by the upstream rotating blade rows in axial turbomachines. The pressure or suction side of the airfoil is also simulated according to the rotating direction of circular rods. As the Reynolds number and the number of rotating rods increase, the boundary layer transition occurs earlier and the Nusselt number increases. The difference of heat transfer coefficient is less on the pressure side than on the suction side. At a constant Reynolds number, the Nusselt number is larger and smaller, respectively, before and after transition as the Strouhal number increases.

  • 3-ply Mg/Al/STS clad-metal was fabricated by the roll bonding process. An interfacial reaction layer was formed at the Mg/Al interface at and above $300^{\circ}C$ whereas no interfacial reaction layer was observed up to $400^{\circ}C$. The effect of the interfacial reaction layer on the mechanical and fracture properties in clad metals after heat treatments were investigated The chemical compositions were analyzed at the Mg/Al interface by an Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). A tension test was performed to examine the interfacial cracking properties. The Mg layer fractured first, causing a sudden drop of the stress and Al/STS layer continued to deform until the final fracture. Periodic cracks and crack propagation was observed at the reaction layer between Mg and Al.

  • The microstructures and mechanical properties of roll-bonded STS439/Al1050/STS304 clad materials were investigated after an annealing process at various temperatures. Interfacial layer was developed at the STS439/Al1050 and Al1050/STS304 interfaces at $550^{\circ}C$. STS439/Al1050/STS304 clad metals fractured suddenly in a single step and the fracture decreased with increasing annealing temperatures at $450^{\circ}C$. After annealing at $550^{\circ}C$, samples fractured in three steps with each layer fracturing independently. Interfacial layers formed at $550^{\circ}C$ with a high Vickers microhardness were found to be brittle. During tensile testing, periodic parallel cracks were observed at the interfacial reaction layer. Observed micro-void between Al1050 and the interfacial layer was found to weaken the Al1050/reaction layer interface, leading to the total separation between Al1050 and the reaction layer.

  • The propagation characteristics in parallel plate waveguide with dielectric layer having periodic metal strip pattern are investigated. PIN diode ON/OFF states are regarded as the short and open circuit, respectively, in the simulation using CST's MWS. The $11.25^{\circ}$, $22.5^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$ layers which can be used for X-band 4-bit Radant lens phase shifter, are designed. The simulated results for each dielectric layer are $11.28^{\circ}$, $23.2^{\circ}$, and $46.22^{\circ}$, respectively. Also, the equivalent circuit of each layer at the operating band is realized and simulated using Agilent's ADS. The ADS simulated results are compared with the MWS simulated ones. Measured differential phase shills at the center frequency are $9.6^{\circ}$, $22.4^{\circ}$, and $43^{\circ}$, respectively.

  • In this paper, we analyze inner- and far-field emitted field pattern by more exactly calculating modes formed from a finite periodic dielectric structure(FPDS). It is assumed that TE-modes are generated in FPDS, and the fields in each layer are determined by proper boundary conditions. Consequently, the fields generate modes in the FPDS and the number of modes depends on its structural characteristics. In this work, the modes betwween dielectric layers and their field patterns are calculated in a specific frequency. In addition. far field patterns are given by using FFT of the calculated modes.

  • In this paper, I propose an application layer cooperative congestion control scheme for safety message broadcast in vehicular networks, called CMS, that adaptively controls a vehicle's safety message rate and transmit timing based on the channel congestion state. Motivated by the fact that all vehicles should transmit and receive an application layer safety message in a periodic manner, I directly exploit the message itself as a means of estimating the channel congestion state. In particular, vehicles can determine wider network conditions by appending their local channel estimation result onto safety message transmissions and sharing them with each other. In result CMS realizes cooperative congestion control without any modification of the existing MAC protocol. I present extensive NS-3 simulation results which show that CMS outperforms conventional congestion control schemes in terms of the packet collision rate and throughput, especially in a high-density traffic environment.

  • The existin Berenger's PML(Perfectly Matched Layer) cannot absorb evanescent modes effectively generated in waveguides or periodic array structures. Although some absorbing boundary conditons(ABC) were introduced to absorp the evanescent modes, they did not show sufficient performance or could not be applied easily because of their much difference from Berengers PML. In this paper, NPML(New PML) is introduced to absorb the evanescent modes by splitting the conductivity and permittivity profile of the Berengers PML. The proposed NPML is certified as an ABC having enough performance for evanescent and propagating modes by analyzing the global error and the reflectivity of a waveguide.
