Nonpoint source pollutants from agriculture are identified as one of the main causes of water quality degradation in the United States. The Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) was used to simulate runoff, nitrogen, and sediment loads from an urbanizing watershed; the Polecat Creek watershed located in Virginia. Model parameters related to hydrology and water quality were calibrated and validated using observed hydrologic and water quality data collected at the watershed outlet and at several sub-watershed outlets. A comparison of measured and simulated monthly runoff at the outlet of the watershed resulted in a correlation coefficient of 0.94 for the calibration period and 0.74 for the validation period. The annual observed and simulated sediment loads for the calibration period were 220.9 kg/ha and 201.5 kg/ha, respectively. The differences for annual nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$) loads between the observed and simulated values at the outlet of the watershed were 5.1% and 42.1% for the calibration and validation periods, respectively. The corresponding values for total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) were 60.9% and 40.7%, respectively. Based on the simulation results, the calibrated HSPF input parameters were considered to adequately represent the Polecat Creek watershed.
Trend of some hydrologic features such as precipitation, runoff and reservoir storage rates in the five great river systems of Han, Nakdong, Keum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river watershed areas were surveyed and analysed. The sample period of Sept. 1994 to Aug. 1998 (four years) was chracterized by unusual climatic features such as El Nino, La Nina and areal terrible storms. And also average values of rainfall and runoff of the priod of 1961 to 1990 (30 years) were surveyed and analysed compared with the sample preiod events for the same river systems. In case of the monthly mean rainfall of the sample period (Sept. 1994 to Aug. 1998 : 48 months) in the five great river systems, 20 months, 19 months, 20 months, 21 months and 18 months in the Han, Nakdong, Keum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river system respectively were higher than monthly average rainfall records of the 30 year records. For the monthly runoff in the same river systems, 7 months, 9 months, 7 months, 11 months and 11 month in the Han, Nakdong, Keum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river systems respectively were higher than the monthly average runoff of the period of 30 years. For the storage rates, most of the dams in the Han river systems were highly stored through the year continuously and Paldang dam was specially higher than the other dams in the same river system. And most of the dams in the other river systems were stored irregularly but getting much better than early time during the 48 months. And special climatic features were not found during the sample period of 48 months, Sept. 1994 to Aug. 1998.
In this paper, the Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF) was validated to estimate the pollutant loads from rural small watershed. The study watershed was the HP#6 subwatershed in Balhan reservoir watershed, located southwest from Suwon. The drainage area of HP#6 study watershed was 3.85$\textrm{km}^2$. Parameters of the HSPF model related to hydrology and water quality were calibrated from 1996 to 1997, and validated from 1999 to 2000 using observed hydrologic and water quality data. The average simulated runoff ratio for the calibration period was 0.579 and the measured runoff ratio was 0.583. The root mean square error (RMSE) for runoff during the calibration period was 2.1mm and correlation coefficient ($R^2$) was 0.92. Regarding the total nitrogen simulation, the RMSE was 0.086kg/ha/day and $R^2$ was 0.81 for the calibration period. In the case of total phosphorus, the RMSE was 0.012kg/ha/day and $R^2$ was 0.70 for the calibration period.

The first flush phenomenon is defined as the initial period of road runoff during which the concentration of pollutants was significantly high. Road runoff contains significant loads of micro-particles, heavy metals and organic constituents. There were two major objectives of this study. The first objective was to characterize the road runoff. The second objective was to measure and evaluate particle sire distribution of the road runoff, Stormwater runoff was monitored on two sites of four lane road areas along with traffic volume. A total six storm events were monitored to characterize the road runoff. The quantity of road runoff and quality constituents, including chemical oxygen demand ($COD_{Cr}$), suspended solids(SS), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), ortho-phosphorus ($PO_4-P$), total phosphorus(TP), heavy metals and particle size distribution were analyzed. The results indicate that the concentration of SS, $COD_{Cr}$, TKN and TP ranges were $45{\sim}2,396\;mg/L$, $40{\sim}931\;mg/L$, $0.1{\sim}19.6\;mg/L$, and $0.2{\sim}25.1\;mg/L$, respectively. The results of the regression analysis between SS and the others constituents shows that $COD_{Cr}$, TP, Cu, Pb were highly correlated. And the results showed that the mean range of particle size and uniformity coefficient for road runoff were $6.7{\sim}23.4{\mu}$ and $6.4{\sim}10.2$, respectively.

Long-term annual water balances are analyzed for two forest catchments located in Gwangneung covered with forests of different types and ages. The water balance trends of the two catchments from 1982 to 2009 are compared to identify the effect of forest growth and thinning on the water balance in a planted coniferous forest catchment. According to the averaged annual precipitation and runoff for the four designated periods from 1982 to 2009, the water balance of the old natural broad-leaved forest catchment (GB) remained relatively unchanged. In contrast, the young planted coniferous forest catchment (GC) showed significant changes in the water balance due to the forest growing and thinning. The results showed that the catchment runoff decreases with increasing tree age whereas the forest thinning results in an increase in catchment runoff. The mean annual runoff from the catchment GC after thinning increased by 1.7 times, compared with the mean annual runoff before forest thinning. The mean annual runoff from the catchment GB was very stable throughout the period. However, such an effect of forest thinning appeared to last only for about 10 year-period, after which the water yield increment in the catchment GC disappeared. It indicates that the proper forest management should be reconsidered at the interval of 10 years to effectively reduce water loss and increase water yield in the planted coniferous forest.
As sloped farmland is subject to runoff and soil erosion and consequently require appropriate vegetative coverage to conserve soil and water, a field study was carried out to evaluate the impact of crop canopy coverage on soil loss and runoff from the experimental plot with three different textural types (clay loam, loam, and sandy loam). The runoff and soil loss were examined at lysimeters with 15% slope, 5 m in length, and 2 m in width for five months from May to September 2009 in Suwon ($37^{\circ}$ 16' 42.67" N, $126^{\circ}$ 59' 0.11" E). Red pepper (Capsicum annum L. cv. Daechon) seedlings were transplanted on three different dates, May 4 (RP1), 15 (RP2), and 25 (RP3) to check vegetation coverage. During the experimental period, the vegetation coverage and plant height were measured at 7 day-intervals and then the 'canopy cover subfactor' (an inverse of vegetation cover) was subsequently calculated. After each rainfall ceased, the amounts of soil loss and runoff were measured from each plot. Under rainfall events >100 mm, both soil loss and runoff ratio increased with increasing canopy cover subfactor ($R^2$=0.35, p<0.01, $R^2$=0.09, p<0.1), indicating that as vegetation cover increases, the amount of soil loss and runoff reduces. However, the soil loss and runoff were depending on the soil texture and rainfall intensity (i. e., $EI_{30}$). The red pepper canopy cover subfactor was more highly correlated with soil loss in clay loam ($R^2$=0.83, p<0.001) than in sandy loam ($R^2$=0.48, p<0.05) and loam ($R^2$=0.43, p<0.1) plots. However, the runoff ratio was effectively mitigated by the canopy coverage under the rainfall only with $EI_{30}$<1000 MJ mm $ha^{-1}hr^{-1}$ ($R^2$=0.34, p<0.05). Therefore, this result suggested that soil loss from the red pepper field could be reduced by adjusting seedling transplanting dates, but it was also affected by the various soil textures and $EI_{30}$.
SCS method was applied to make the assessments of direct runoff according to land use changes in Jeju island. Land uses were obtained from 5 year-period remote sensing time series data from 1975 to 2000 which are provided by Water Management Information System (WAMIS). Hydrologic soil groups were categorized based on soil series of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), and permeable geologic structures such as Sumgol, Gotzawal and so on. The land uses of Jeju island are obviously characterized by urban-agricultural areas increases, and forest areas decrease. According to land use changes, curve number (CN) for Jeju island was consistently increased from 65.3 in 1975 to 69.6 in 2000. From 1975 to 2000, the amount of direct runoff and ratios increased due to CN changes. When the rainfall data in 1995 was applied to each year, the direct runoff amounts were $299.0{\sim}351.6\;mm$, and runoff ratios were $15.1{\sim}17.7%$. In the case of the application of the rainfall data in 2000, the direct runoff amounts were $136.9{\sim}161.5\;mm$, and runoff ratios were $9.7{\sim}11.5%$. Since direct runoff can be closely related to groundwater recharge and sustainable groundwater yield, the groundwater influence caused by land use changes or district exploitations should be considered for the reasonable water management and development in Jeju island.
Water cycle analysis in the Cheonggyecheon watershed(river length: 13.75 km, area: $50.96\;km^2$) was performed using WEP model, a physically based distributed rainfall-runoff model. As the application results of the model, the hydrological characteristics of the Cheonggyecheon watershed are significantly consistent with those of a typical urbanized watershed. The direct runoff from the watershed was larger and the evapotranspiration. was lower, and the response of runoff to rainfall was occurred very fast, as compared to forest watersheds. The river channel routing simulation results are similar to the change pattern and scale of the field data. The possible supply period of instream flow from Cheonggyecheoon watershed itself was estimated using WEP. According to the WEP simulation results for the annual water balance of the Cheonggyecheon watershed in 2002, the amount of direct runoff, infiltration and evapotranspiration were 830 mm, 388 mm and 397 mm respectively for an annual precipitation of 1,388 mm. The runoff to rivers was 1,288 mm. And the proportion of direct runoff, intermediate runoff and groundwater runoff were $67.6\%,\;12.7\%$ and $19.7\%$ respectively.

Watershed runoff that is an important component of the hydrological processes has been significantly altered by climate variability and human activities in many watersheds around the world. It is important to investigate the impacts of climate variability and human activities on watershed runoff change for water resource management. In this study, using watershed runoff data for 109 middle-sized watersheds in Korea, the impacts of climate variability and human activities on watershed runoff change were quantitatively evaluated. Using the Pittitt test, the analysis period was divided into two sub-periods, and the impacts of climate variability and human activities on the watershed runoff change were quantified using the Budyko hypothesis-based climate elasticity method. The overall results indicated that the relative contribution of climate variability and human activities to the watershed runoff change varied by middle-sized watersheds, and the dominant factors on the watershed runoff change were identified for each watershed among climate variability and human activities. The results of this study enable us to predict the watershed runoff change considering climate variability and watershed development plans, which provides useful information for establishing a water resource management plan to reduce the risk of hydrological disasters such as drought or flood.

The objective of this research was to investigate runoff characteristics of suspended solid (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from a paddy field watershed during storm events in the growing and non-growing seasons. Average of event mean concentration (EMC) of pollutants were 56.9 mg/L for SS and 23.9 mg/L for COD in the non-growing season and 50.3 mg/L for SS and 11.9 mg/L for COD in the growing season. The average EMC of SS in the study area was much lower than that in the uplands irrespective of cultivation, suggesting that paddy fields control soil erosion. This may be because flooding and wet soil in the growing season, and rice straw residue and stubble on the topsoil in the non-growing season reduce soil erosion. The changing tillage practice from fall tillage to spring tillage avoids soil erosion due to shortening of the tilled fallow period. However, the average EMC of COD in the non-growing season was about twice as much that in the growing season likely due to the runoff of organics like rice straw residues. The relationship between SS and COD loads and stormwater runoff volume was expressed by power function. The exponent for SS was higher than that for COD, suggesting that SS load increased with stormflow runoff more than COD load did. The mean SS and COD loads per storm during the non-growing season were much lower than those in the growing season, and therefore non-point source pollution in the growing season should be managed well.
