  • This paper proposes an efficient approach for hardware implementation of moving object detection (MOD) processor using effective Gaussian mixture learning (EGML)-based background subtraction method. Arithmetic units used in background generation were implemented using LUT-based approximation to reduce hardware complexity. Hardware resources used for both background subtraction and Gaussian probability density calculation were shared. The MOD processor was verified by FPGA-in-the-loop simulation using MATLAB/Simulink. The MOD performance was evaluated by using six types of video defined in IEEE CDW-2014 dataset, which resulted the average of recall value of 0.7700, the average of precision value of 0.7170, and the average of F-measure value of 0.7293. The MOD processor was implemented with 882 slices and block RAM of $146{\times}36kbits$ on Virtex5 FPGA, resulting in 60% hardware reduction compared to conventional design based on EGML. It was estimated that the MOD processor could operate with 75 MHz clock, resulting in real-time processing of $800{\times}600$ video with a frame rate of 39 fps.

  • Smart healthcare systems, a convergent industry based on information and communications technologies (ICT), has emerged from personal health management to remote medical treatment as a distinguished industry. The smart healthcare environment provides technology to deliver vital information, such as pulse rate, body temperature, health status, and so on, from wearable devices to the hospital network where the physician is located. However, since it deals with the patient's personal medical information, there is a security issue for personal information management, and the system may be vulnerable to cyber-attacks in wireless networks. Therefore, this study focuses on a key-development and device-management system to generate keys in the smart environment to safely manage devices. The protocol is designed to provide safe communications with the generated key and to manage the devices, as well as the generated key. The security level is analyzed against attack methods that may occur in a healthcare environment, and it was compared with existing key methods and coding capabilities. In the performance evaluation, we analyze the security against attacks occurring in a smart healthcare environment, and the security and efficiency of the existing key encryption method, and we confirmed an improvement of about 15%, compared to the existing cipher systems.

  • The need for storage, management, and retrieval techniques for alternative data has emerged as technologies based on data generated from business activities conducted by enterprises have emerged as the key to business success in recent years. Existing big data platform systems must load a large amount of data generated in real time without delay to process unstructured data, which is an alternative data, and efficiently manage storage space by utilizing a deduplication system of different storages when redundant data occurs. In this paper, we propose a multi-layer distributed data deduplication process system using the similarity of the Cuckoo hashing filter technique considering the characteristics of big data. Similarity between virtual machines is applied as Cuckoo hash, individual storage nodes can improve performance with deduplication efficiency, and multi-layer Cuckoo filter is applied to reduce processing time. Experimental results show that the proposed method shortens the processing time by 8.9% and increases the deduplication rate by 10.3%.

  • It is well known that the improved methods of the estimation of the service power margin is necessary to design a optimum ship and to operate economically a ship. Unfortunately, most conventional methods of the predicting of the service power margin are not so accurate that attention should be payed to improve this. From this overview, it is importance with. the effects of waves, as recommended by the 15th and 16th International Towing Tank Conference in 1978 and l981. However the progress of research in this field is very slow mainly since it is taken so long time to take data about hull roughness according to ship ages. For instance, it would be taken 17 or 25 years to measure ideally the data for a ship. Moreover it would be also necessary to take data for many types of ships to lead a general solution. A relationship between roughness and ship age are studied in this paper considering full scale data. A comparison is also made between the effects of hull roughness and of weather at sea for the ship.

  • In the performance of a wind turbine system, the blades play a vital role. However, they are susceptible to damage arising from complex and irregular loading (which may even cause catastrophic collapse), and they are expensive to maintain. Therefore, it is very important both to find defects after blade manufacturing is completed and to find damage after the blade is used for a certain period of time. This study provides a new perspective for the detection of internal defects in glass-fiber- and carbon-fiber-reinforced panels, which are used as the main materials in wind turbine blades. A gap or fracture between fiber-reinforced materials, which may occur during blade manufacturing or operation, is simulated by drilling a hole 5 mm in diameter in the middle layer of the laminated material. Then, a digital-image-correlation (DIC) method is used to detect internal defects in the blade. Tensile load is applied to the fabricated specimen using a tensile tester, and the generated changes are recorded and analyzed with the DIC system. In the glass-fiber-reinforced laminated specimen, internal defects were detected from a strain value of 5% until the end of the experiment, while in the case of the carbon-fiber-reinforced laminated specimen, internal defects were detected from 1% onward. It was proved using the DIC system that the defect was detected as a certain level of strain difference developed around the internal defects, according to the material properties.

  • Exchanging personal health information(PHI) is an essential process of healthcare services using information and communication technology. But the process have the inherent risk of information disclosure, so the PHI should be protected to ensure the reliability of healthcare services. In this paper, we designed encryption module for wearable personal health devices(PHD). A main goal is to guarantee that the real-time encoded and transmitted PHI cannot be allowed to be read, revised and utilized without user's permission. To achieve this, encryption algorithms as DES and 3DES were implemented in modules operating in Telos Rev B(16bit RISC, 8Mhz). And the experiments were performed in order to evaluate the performance of encryption and decryption using vital-sign measured by PHD. As experimental results, an block encryption was measured the followings: DES required 1.802 ms and 3DES required 6.683 ms. Also, we verified the interoperability among heterogeneous devices by testing that the encrypted data in Telos could be decoded in other machines without errors. In conclusion, the encryption module is the method that a PHD user is given the powerful right to decide for authority of accessing his PHI, so it is expected to contribute the trusted healthcare service distribution.

  • The building design projects which are being proceeded nowadays pursue a complex and various shape of structures, escaping from the traditional and regular shape of buildings. In this new trend of the architecture, there rises a demand of the research in the structural engineering for the effective realization of such complex-shaped buildings which disassembles the orthogonality of frames. As a distinguished characteristics of the buildings in a complex-shape, there frequently are inclined columns included in the structural frame. The inclined column causes extra axial force and bending moment at the beam-column connection so it is necessary to assess those effects on the structural behavior of the frame and the connection by experiment or analysis. However, with comparing to the studies on the normal beam-column connections, the inclined column connections have not been studied sufficiently. Therefore, this study evaluated the beam-column connections having an inclined column using nonlinear and finite element analysis method. In this paper, steel moment frames having inclined columns were analyzed by the nonlinear pushover analysis to check the global behavior and beam-column connection models were analyzed by the finite element analysis to check the buckling behavior and the fracture potentials.
