  • This paper presents the theoretical model to investigate the effect of Coulomb damping in the sub-structure of a foil bearing. Foil deflection is restricted by friction of bumps. Equivalent viscous damping of the bump foils is derived from the Coulomb friction. Dynamic equation of the bumps is constituted by stiffness and damping terms. This point give the difference from Heshmat's frictionless and simple compliance bump model. The fluid is modeled with the compressible Reynolds equation. A perturbation approach is used to determine the static and dynamic performance of the bearing from the coupled fluid-structural model. The analysis result shows that the static and dynamic performance is enhanced by bump friction. This analysis technique would be extended to development of a high performance bearing.

  • This paper describes the basic model and simulation results of thermal battery. Voltage and thermal analysis is a critical part of thermal-battery design because of the need to maintain the inner temperature above the electrolyte melting point. Traditionally, battery design has depended on an empirical approach, in which prototype batteries are outfitted with thermocouples and the design of subsequent batteries is refined accordingly. We have developed the basic model that allows the design engineer to configure or modify a battery, quickly conduct a thermal analysis, and efficiently review the results. Based on performance tests, the thermal-battery model was established and the effect of design parameters on battery performance was analyzed.

  • Flow analysis and performa nce evaluation have been performed for a ventilation axial-flow fan with different positions of the motor. Two different positions of motor have been tested; one is in front of the impeller and the other is behind the impeller. Flow analyses are performed by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations through a finite-volume solver. Preliminary numerical calculations are carried out to test the performances of different turbulence models, i.e., SST model, k-$\omega$ model, and k-$\varepsilon$ model with and without using empirical wall function in the flow analysis. The validation of numerical analyses has been performed in comparison with the experimental data. The numerical results for the performance characteristics of the ventilation axial-flow fan with two different positions of the motor have been presented.

  • It is very important to forecast freight volume accurately to establish major port policies and future operation plans. Thus, related studies are being conducted because of this importance. In this paper, stepwise regression analysis and artificial neural network model were analyzed to compare the predictive power of each model on Gwangyang Port, the largest domestic port for coal and iron ore transportation. Data of a total of 121 months J anuary 2009-J anuary 2019 were used. Factors affecting coal and iron ore trade volume were selected and classified into supply-related factors and market/economy-related factors. In the stepwise regression analysis, the tonnage of ships entering the port, coal price, and dollar exchange rate were selected as the final variables in case of the Gwangyang Port coal volume forecasting model. In the iron ore volume forecasting model, the tonnage of ships entering the port and the price of iron ore were selected as the final variables. In the analysis using the artificial neural network model, trial-and-error method that various Hyper-parameters affecting the performance of the model were selected to identify the most optimal model used. The analysis results showed that the artificial neural network model had better predictive performance than the stepwise regression analysis. The model which showed the most excellent performance was the Gwangyang Port Coal Volume Forecasting Artificial Neural Network Model. In comparing forecasted values by various predictive models and actually measured values, the artificial neural network model showed closer values to the actual highest point and the lowest point than the stepwise regression analysis.

  • The purpose of the present study is to develop an analysis model to analyze the design parameter sensitivity of a high-power drifter suitable for implementation in Korean hydraulic drills. This study aims to establish a basis for the optimization of the impact performance and stability of a high-power drifter by investigating the effects of each design parameter on the impact performance via design parameter sensitivity analysis. To begin, an analysis model of drifter dynamics is developed, and the reliability of the analysis model is verified by comparing the analysis results to the experimental results. The drifter is then redesigned for compatibility with Korean hydraulic drills. Finally, design parameter sensitivity analysis of the redesigned drifter is conducted to determine the effects of the design parameters on the impact performance, and to extract the high-sensitivity parameters. SimulationX, which is multi-physics analysis software, is used to develop the analysis model, and EasyDesign is employed for design parameter sensitivity analysis.

  • Fieldbus provides a real-time data communication among field devices in the process control and manufacturing automation systems. In this paper, a Petri Net model of the 1993 draft of IEC/ISA fieldbus which is proposed as an international standard of fieldbus network is developed. Based on the Petri Net model, discrete-event simulation model of IEC/ISA fieldbus network is developed. This paper evaluates the network induced delay in the data link layer of IEC/ISA fieldbus using the simulation model. In addition, an integrated discrete-event/continuous-time simulation model of fieldbus system and distributed control system is developed. This paper investigates the real-time data processing capability of IEC/ISA fieldbus and the effect of network-induced delay to the performance of control system.

  • It is not easy to monitor and identify all engine faults and conditions using conventional fault detection approaches like the GPA (Gas Path Analysis) method due to the nature and complexity of the faults. This study therefore focuses on a model based diagnostic method using Neural Network algorithms proposed for fault detection on a turbo shaft engine (PW 206C) selected as the power plant for a tilt rotor type unmanned aerial vehicle (Smart UAV). The model based diagnosis should be performed by a precise performance model. However component maps for the performance model were not provided by the engine manufacturer. Therefore they were generated by a new component map generation method, namely hybrid method using system identification and genetic algorithms that identifies inversely component characteristics from limited performance deck data provided by the engine manufacturer. Performance simulations at different operating conditions were performed on the PW206C turbo shaft engine using SIMULINK. In order to train the proposed BPNN (Back Propagation Neural Network), performance data sets obtained from performance analysis results using various implanted component degradations were used. The trained NN system could reasonably detect the faulted components including the fault pattern and quantity of the study engine at various operating conditions.

  • As the applications for Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs) have varied, performance analysis has become one of the main research areas. They commonly offer only simple radio propagation models that neglect obstacles of a propagation environment. The radio wave propagation model has a strong impact on the results of the simulation run. In this paper we present the new experimental results of the impacts of the various propagation models on MANETs' performance. Intensive simulations have been presented using the group mobility which models typical ad-hoc situations such as military movements or disaster recovery activities under the supervision of a group leader. Comparisons of conventional simple models with more complicated models, i.e., shadowing, Raleigh, and Ricean models, show that, in spite of the models' popularity, the free space and two-ray ground models are too optimistic in describing real ad-hoc group mobility situations.
