  • In this study the performance and humidity variation for 2 unit cells connected in series were experimentally measured. The relative flow direction of hydrogen and air was changed from parallel flow to counter flow. Internal humidity distribution was then measured by 5 embedded sensors on each channel. In all experimental conditions, the former unit cell showed a better performance and the gap is noted to be higher when counter flow is applied. The performance was noted to be higher at high humidification case in the parallel flow. However, in the counter flow, the difference of performance according to the humidification is negligible. Hydrogen and air are discharged from the PEMFC unsaturated with water vapor at parallel flow/low humidification condition, which explains lower performance of the PEMFC than other conditions. The humidities in hydrogen and air streams of counter flow were noted to increase rapidly even at low humidification condition and the consequential even hydration of membrane is the reason of higher performance.

  • Purpose - This paper proposes measurement models to evaluate the management performance of small and medium-sized retail businesses on the basis of a trading area analysis that compares their proposed revenue to actual revenue in the trading area. Research design, data, methodology - The study proposes measurement models consisting of five stages, namely: (1) district background survey, (2) customer survey, (3) competitor survey, (4) business district survey, and (5) business performance analysis. Results - To identify business districts easily, this study preferred a minor-adjusted method based on the Euclidean distance, as it is simple to employ for the small and medium-sized businesses. This model was applied to select coffee shops in Daejeon. Results indicated that although the targeted shop was not located in an appropriate location, actual sales were higher than expected. Conclusions - Small- or medium-sized retail businesses face difficulties regarding the economies of scale and brand recognition and must choose an appropriate location to ensure management stability. However, such businesses will find it difficult to evaluate their competitive edge accurately using a trading area analysis.

  • We consider transmission over body area networks. Due to the difficulty in assessing an accurate statistical model valid for multiple scenarios, we advocate a system design technique favoring robustness. Our approach, which is based on results in [12] and generalizes them, examines the variation of a performance metric when the nominal statistical distribution of fading is replaced by the worst distribution within a given Kullback-Leibler divergence from it. The sensitivity of the performance metric to the divergence from the nominal distribution can be used as an indication of the design robustness. This concept is applied by evaluating the error probability of binary uncoded modulation and the outage probability-the first parameter is useful to assess system performance with no error-control coding, while the second reflects the performance when a near-optimal code is used. The usefulness of channel coding can be assessed by comparing its robustness with that of uncoded transmission.

  • This paper examines the insulation performance of synthetic air and dry air. This examination was conducted based on dielectric strength in uniform and non-uniform field, electric field distribution by interior structure and defects in gas insulation switchgear (GIS) and insulation performance in different temperatures. From this review, it was found that eco-insulation gas required to possess low moisture content for power equipment in the distribution class. The results of this paper are valuable to ensure the insulation design and insulation reliability of GIS using air.

  • This paper develops a dynamic regression model to quantify the contribution of key external factors to operational energy efficiency of ships. On this basis, kernel density estimation is applied to explore distribution patterns of fluctuations in operational performance. An empirical analysis based on these methods show that distribution of fluctuations in Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) is leptokurtic and fat tailed, rather than a normal one. Around 85% of fluctuations in EEOI can be jointly explained by capacity utilization and sailing speed, while the rest depend on other external factors largely beyond control. The variations in capacity utilization and sailing speed cannot be fully passed on to the energy efficiency performance of ships, due to complex interactions between various external factors. The application of the methods is demonstrated, showing a potential approach to develop a rating mechanism for use in the legally binding framework on operational energy efficiency of ships.

  • As the power system network is enlarged and complicated gradually, the automation of power system network is essential to enhance the reliability and performance of the operation of power system. Distribution restoration is a major part of the automation. This paper proposes a new distribution restoration system to restore healthy blackout regions by the hierarchical cooperation with the substation automation systems. In proposed system, the range of restoration is extended to substations and the performance as well as the switching efficiency of restoration system is enhanced.

  • Recently, many studies on the supply chain management have been published due to increasing attention placed on the design and performance analysis of the supply chain as a whole. Using the Beer distribution game introduced in Sterman[1995], we develop a simple order-up-to-R inventory model to minimize sum of the inventory holding cost and shortage cost under probabilistic demand. We show that performance of the model is robust through extensive simulation experiment. Applying the model to serially connected supply chain, we observe that, if the unit shortage cost is relatively high, R value computed independently is an optimal solution.

  • The marginal distribution of X is considered when (X, Y) has a truncated bivariate t-distribution. This paper mainly focuses on the marginal nontruncated distribution of X where Y is truncated below at its mean and its observations are not available. Several properties and applications of this distribution, including relationship with Azzalini's skew-normal distribution, are obtained. To circumvent inferential problem arises from adopting the frequentist's approach, a Bayesian method utilizing a data augmentation method is suggested. Illustrative examples demonstrate the performance of the method.
