  • This paper presents a lateral displacement restoring force control for the independently rotating wheelsets (IRWs) of shallow-depth subway systems. In the case of the near surface transit, which has recently been introduced, sharp curved driving performance is required for the city center service. It is possible to decrease the curve radius and to improve the performance of the straight running with the individual torque control. Therefore, the individual torque control performance of the motor is the most important point of the near surface transit. This paper deals with a lateral displacement restoring force control for sharp curved driving. The validity and usefulness of the proposed control algorithm is verified by experimental results using a small-scale bogie system.

  • Seismic performance of semi-active fuzzy control algorithm to operate MR dampers for coupling adjacent building is investigated in this paper. In the proposed semi-active control technique, the fuzzy logic is used as a method to adjust input voltage to MR damper. In order to validate control performance of proposed technique, the seismic performance of the semi-active fuzzy control system is compared with that of passive control system where the input voltage to MR damper is set to display maximum damping force. The simulated results show that the semi-active fuzzy control technique effectively regulates the trade-off existing between seismic responses of two buildings subject to various earthquake excitations.

  • A piezoelectric actuator yields hysteresis effect due to its composed ferroelectric. Hysteresis nonlinearty is neglected when a piezoelectric actuator moves with short stroke. However when it moves with long stroke and high frequency, the hysteresis nonlinearty can not be neglected. The hysteresis nonlinearty of piezoelectric actuator degrades the control performance in precision position control. In this paper, in order to improve the control performance of piezoelectric actuator, an inverse modeling scheme is proposed to compensate the hysteresis nonlinearty problem.   • The tools, methods and measures used for project control reflect underlying theories of management. Management theory has been neglected in the construction industry, which has rather focused on tools and neglected theory. This paper contributes to the theory of project management by introducing and developing two fundamental and competing conceptualizations of management: MBM (Managing-by-Means) and MBR (Managing-by-results). Current project control and performance measurement practice is based on MBR. However, project control based on MBR may not be appropriate for managing dynamic projects. The paper present the Last PlannerTM System (LPS) and Process Variance Control (PVC) as examples of methods reflecting the MBM view. It is argued first that the MBM view is appropriate for managing uncertain, complex and quick projects. The paper also explores how MBR tools and techniques may be appropriately used within an MBM framework.

  • A digital controller uses a microprocessor and is a controller implemented as a program. This method has the advantage of being more maintenance-friendly than existing analog controllers. However, it inevitably requires computation time to execute the internal program. Therefore, the digital controller uses a method of controlling the system at a certain cycle by considering this time, and this cycle is very closely related to the performance of the microprocessor used. In other words, in the case of very high performance, this control cycle can be shortened to near real time, but this may result in a disadvantage in terms of cost. In this paper, we propose a method to solve this problem by implementing two processors with slightly lower performance in a control system in a series-parallel structure. For this purpose, we will use a digital distributed control system and implement an experimental system to examine its effectiveness.

An Effective Multivariate Control Framework for Monitoring Cloud Systems Performance

  • Cloud computing systems' performance is still a central focus of research for determining optimal resource utilization. Running several existing benchmarks simultaneously serves to acquire performance information from specific cloud system resources. However, the complexity of monitoring the existing performance of computing systems is a challenge requiring an efficient and interactive user directing performance-monitoring system. In this paper, we propose an effective multivariate control framework for monitoring cloud systems performance. The proposed framework utilizes the hardware cloud systems performance metrics, collects and displays the performance measurements in terms of meaningful graphics, stores the graphical information in a database, and provides the data on-demand without requiring a third party software. We present performance metrics in terms of CPU usage, RAM availability, number of cloud active machines, and number of running processes on the selected machines that can be monitored at a high control level by either using a cloud service customer or a cloud service provider. The experimental results show that the proposed framework is reliable, scalable, precise, and thus outperforming its counterparts in the field of monitoring cloud performance.

  • This paper presents a hybrid system combining lead rubber bearings and hydraulic actuators controlled by a μ-synthesis method for seismic response control of a cable-stayed bridge. A hybrid system could alleviate some of restrictions and limitations that exist when each system is acting alone because multiple control devices are operating. Therefore, the overall control performance of a hybrid system may be improved compared to each system, however the overall system robustness may be negatively impacted by active device in the hybrid system or active controller may cause instability due to small margins. Therefore, a f-synthesis method that guarantees the robust performance is considered to enhance the possibility of real applications of the control system. The control performances of the proposed control system are compared with those of passive, active, semiactive control systems and hybrid system controlled by LQG algorithm and an extensive robust analysis with respect to stiffness and mass matrices perturbation and time delay of actuator is performed. Numerical simulation results show that the control performance of the proposed control system is superior to that of the passive system and slightly better than that of the active and semiactive systems and two hybrid systems show similar control performances. Furthermore, the hybrid system controlled by a μ-synthesis method shows the good robustness without loss of control performances. Therefore, the proposed control system could effectively be used to seismically excited cable-stayed bridge which contains many uncertainties.

Development of Flight Control Laws for the T-50 Advanced Supersonic Jet Trainer

  • The T-50 advanced supersonic jet trainer employs the Relaxed Static Stability (RSS) concept to improve the aerodynamic performance while the flight control system stabilizes the unstable aircraft and provides adequate handling qualities. The T-50 flight control laws employ a proportional-plus-integral type controller based on a dynamic inversion method in longitudinal axis and a proportional type controller based on a blended roll system with simple roll rate feedback and beta-betadot feedback system. These control laws are verified by flight tests with various maneuver set flight envelopes and the control laws are updated to resolve flight test issues. This paper describes several concepts of flight control laws used in T-50 to resolve those flight test issues. Control laws for solving the roll-off problem during pitch maneuver in asymmetric loading configurations, improving the departure resistance in negative angle of attack conditions and enhancing the fine tracking performance in air-to-air tracking maneuvers are described with flight test data.

  • Lately, tugboats are widely used to maneuver vessels by pushing or towing them where tugboats use rope. In order to correctly control the motion of tugboat and towed vessel, the dynamics of the towline would be well identified. In real application environment, the towing rope length changes and the towing load is not constant due to the various sizes of towed vessel. And there are many ropes made by many types of materials. It means that it is not easy to obtain rope dynamics, such that it is too difficult to satisfy the given control purpose by designing control system. Thus real time identification or adaptive control system design method may be a solution. However it is necessary to secure sufficient information about rope dynamics to obtain desirable control performance. In this paper, the authors try to have several rope dynamic models by changing the rope length to consider real application conditions. Among them, a representative model is selected and the others are considered as uncertain models which are considered in control system design. The authors design a robust control to cope with strong uncertain and nonlinear property included in the real plant. The designed control system based on robust control framework is evaluated by simulation.

Study on Satellite Vibration Control using Adaptive Control Scheme

  • Adaptive control methods are studied for the Satellite to isolate vibration in spite of the nonlinear system dynamics and parameter uncertainties of disturbance. First, a centralized control scheme is developed based on the particle swarm optimization(PSO) algorithm and feedback theory to automatically tune controller gains. A simulation study of a 3 degree-of-freedom device was conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed control scheme. Next, since a centralized control scheme is hard to construct model dynamics and not goad at performance when controller and systems environment are easily changed, a decentralized control scheme is presented to avoid these defects of the centralized control scheme from the point of view of production and maintenance. It is based on the adaptive control methodologies to find PID controller parameters. Experiment studies were conducted to apply the adaptive control scheme and evaluate the performance of the proposed control scheme with those of the conventional control schemes.
