This paper presents a simple but efficient scheme incorporating a reputation-based approach and a cross-layer approach, called the SIM scheme, for maintaining reliable connectivity and high performance in ad-hoc wireless networks. The SIM scheme incorporates the following two things: an ad-hoc routing scheme with a reputation-based approach exploiting the game theory concept based on an evolutionarily stable strategy, and a cross-layer approach between the network layer and the transport layer employing a reputation-based approach.

This study investigates a new seismic retrofit system that utilizes rotational friction dampers and axial springs. The retrofit system involves a steel frame with rotational friction dampers (RFD) at beam-column joints and linear springs at the corners, providing energy dissipation and self-centering capabilities to existing structures. The axial spring acts as a self-centering mechanism that eliminates residual deformations, while the friction damper mitigates seismic damage. To evaluate the seismic performance of the proposed retrofit system, a series of cyclic loading tests were carried out on a steel beam-column subassembly equipped with the proposed devices. An analytical model was then developed to validate the experimental results. A performance point ratio (PPR) was presented to optimize the design parameters of the retrofit system, and a performance-based seismic design strategy was developed based on the PPR. The retrofit system's effectiveness and the presented performance-based design approach were evaluated through case study models, and the analysis results demonstrated that the developed retrofit system and the performance-based design procedure were effective in retrofitting structures for multi-level design objectives.

This article aims to provide a design method of warning thresholds for active safety systems based on the performance-based approach considering driver behaviors. Both positive and negative consequences of warnings are considered, and the main idea is to choose a warning threshold where the positive consequence is maximized, whereas the negative consequence is minimized. The process of the performance-based approach involves: Defining the operating scenarios; setting the trajectory models, including human characteristics; estimating the alert and nominal trajectories; estimating the performance metrics; generating a performance-metric plot; and determining the alert thresholds. This paper chose a lane-departure warning system as an example to show the usefulness of the performance-based approach. Both human and sensor characteristics were considered in the system design, and this paper provided a quantitative method to include human factors in designing active safety systems.

This paper introduces a new method for identification of building energy performance problems. The presented method is based on automated analysis and visualization of deviations between actual and expected energy performance of the building using EPAR (Energy Performance Augmented Reality) models. For generating EPAR models, during building inspections, energy auditors collect a large number of digital and thermal imagery using a consumer-level single thermal camera that has a built-in digital lens. Based on a pipeline of image-based 3D reconstruction algorithms built on GPU and multi-core CPU architecture, 3D geometrical and thermal point cloud models of the building under inspection are automatically generated and integrated. Then, the resulting actual 3D spatio-thermal model and the expected energy performance model simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis are superimposed within an augmented reality environment. Based on the resulting EPAR models which jointly visualize the actual and expected energy performance of the building under inspection, two new algorithms are introduced for quick and reliable identification of potential performance problems: 1) 3D thermal mesh modeling using k-d trees and nearest neighbor searching to automate calculation of temperature deviations; and 2) automated visualization of performance deviations using a metaphor based on traffic light colors. The proposed EPAR v2.0 modeling method is validated on several interior locations of a residential building and an instructional facility. Our empirical observations show that the automated energy performance analysis using EPAR models enables performance deviations to be rapidly and accurately identified. The visualization of performance deviations in 3D enables auditors to easily identify potential building performance problems. Rather than manually analyzing thermal imagery, auditors can focus on other important tasks such as evaluating possible remedial alternatives.
We developed the PERUPS system to aid the on-line performance analysis for the turbine cycle of the YongGwang 3 and 4 nuclear power plants. Procedure of measurement validation is included in the performance calculation to obtain heat balance. Precision of on-line performance calculation is increased via practical modifications of standard calculation algorithms based on the PTC (Performance Test Code). The proposed system also provides useful Web-based aids for performance analysis, including performance data management, a graphic viewer for heat balance and turbine expansion lines, and synthesized reports of performance.

Performance based fire engineering design should be developed through basic survey and fundamental element such as analytic program for evaluation of fire performance of building. The basic elements will be expressed to the surveys of the structures of building laws, regulation and the fundamental elements consist of technical guidances contained design fires, heat analysis, determination of structural performance.
Window system is an essential component for lighting, ventilation and thermal environment in buildings. Moreover, as balcony extension in apartment houses become legalized, the performance requirements of window systems in balcony space are getting complicated. However, at this moment, five properties of the windows are used to represent the performance aspects of the system, including wind resistance, air tightness, water tightness, sound insulation, thermal resistance. And such single properties are not capable to express the performance of a space with the window systems in terms of performance concept. A performance analysis with wholistic approach is required to see the effect of the window system in built environment. Thus, performance-based approach should be established, which will be able to evaluate the goal/function and comfort of occupants/owners. As the first step to develop the performance indicator for the window systme for balcony space, this study conducts a survey to find the required performance aspects. A complete set of performance-based indicators will be developed with verification methods in the later stage of research.
Korea Design Standard (KDS) will be updated with two major revisions on the assessment of wind load and performance-based wind design (PBWD). Major changes on the wind load assessment are the wind load factor and basic wind speed. Wind load factor in KDS is reduced from 1.3 to 1, and mean recurrence interval (MRI) for basic wind speed increases from 100 years to 500 years considering the reduction of wind load factor. Additional modification is made including pressure coefficient, torsional moment coefficient and spectrum, and aeroelastic instability. Combined effect of the updates of KDS code on the assessment of wind load is discussed with the case study on the specified sites and building. PBWD is newly added in KDS code to consider the cases with various target performance, vortex-induced vibration, aeroelastic instability, or inelastic behavior. Proposed methods and target performance for PBWD in KDS code are introduced.

With the proliferation of mobile terminals, use of the Internet in mobile environments is becoming more common. To support mobility in these terminals, Mobile IPv4 is proposed and represents the standard in IPv4 environments. Authentication should be mandatory, because mobile terminals can utilize Internet services in any foreign domain. Mobile IPv4 provides symmetric key based authentication using the default HMAC-MD5. However, symmetric key based authentication creates a key distribution problem. To solve this problem, public key based authentication mechanisms have been proposed. In this paper, the performance of each of these mechanisms is evaluated. The results present that, among these mechanisms, partial certificate based authentication has superior performance, and certificate based authentication has the worst performance. Although current public key based authentication mechanisms have lower performance than symmetric key based authentication, this paper presents the possibility that public key based authentication mechanisms may be used for future mobile terminal authentication.

This paper presents the development of intelligent performance management of computer communication networks for larger-scale integrated systems and the demonstration of its efficacy using computer simula- tion. The innermost core of the performance management is based on fuzzy set theory. This fuzzy perfor- mance manager has learning ability by using principles of neuro-fuzzy model, neuralnetwork, genetic algo- rithm(GA). Two types of performance managers are described in this paper. One is the Neuro-Fuzzy Per- formance Manager(NFPM) of which learning ability is based on the conventional gradient method, and the other is GA-based Neuro-Fuzzy Performance Manager(GNFPM)with its learning ability based on a genetic algorithm. These performance managers have been evaluated via discrete event simulation of a computer network.
