  • This paper dealt with an experimental study on the hydroelastic vibration of clamped perforated rectangular plates submerged in water. The penetration of holes in the plates had a triangular pattern with P/D (pitch to diameter) 1.750, 2.125, 2.500, 3.000 and 3.750. The natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air were obtained by the analytical method based on the relation between the reference kinetic and maximum potential energy and compared with the experimental results. Good agreement between the results was found for the natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air. It was empirically found that the natural frequencies of the perforated plate in air increase with an increase of P/D, on the other hand, the natural frequencies of the perforated plate in contact with water decrease with an increase of P/D. Additionally. the effect of the submerged depth on the natural frequency was investigated.

  • Nonlinear seismic performances of code designed Perforated Steel Plate Shear Walls (P-SPSW) were studied. Three multi-storey (4-, 8-, and 12-storey) P-SPSWs were designed according to Canadian seismic provisions and their performance was evaluated using time history analysis for ground motions compatible with Vancouver response spectrum. The selected code designed P-SPSWs exhibited excellent seismic performance with high ductility and strength. The current code equation was found to provide a good estimation of the shear strength of the perforated infill plate, especially when the infill plate is yielded. The applicability of the strip model, originally proposed for solid infill plate, was also evaluated for P-SPSW and two different strip models were studied. It was observed that the strip model with strip widths equal to center to center diagonal distance between each perforation line could reasonably predict the inelastic behavior of unstiffened P-SPSWs. The strip model slightly underestimated the initial stiffness; however, the ultimate strength was predicted well. Furthermore, applicability of simple shear-flexure beam model for determination of fundamental periods of P-SPSWs was studied.

  • Recently, various types of perforated breakwaters are being constructed for protecting offshore storm waves. In general, perforated breakwaters have wave chambers with perforated walls at seaside. Purposes of the wave chambers are to reduce wave reflections and maximum wave forces acting on the breakwater. Impact wave forces due to wave breaking can attack to the perforated wall directly, so the effects have to be considered in the design of the perforated wall carefully. Using resonance channels for wave energy dissipation, a new concept perforated breakwater is proposed, which is free from impact loads. Numerical simulation was made for wave reflection characteristics of the breakwater with respect to major design parameters. Numerical analysis was carried out using the Galerkin's FE model based on the linear potential theory considering energy dissipation on the perforated plate. Variations of wave reflection was investigated according to perforated ratios of perforated plate.

  • Ship structures are thin-walled structures and lots of cutouts, for example, of inner bottom structure, girder, upper deck hatch, floor and dia-frame etc. In the case where a plate has cutout it experiences reduced buckling and ultimate strength and at the same time the in-plane stress under compressive load produced by hull girder bending will be redistributed. In the present paper, we investigated several kinds of perforated stiffened model from actual ship structure and series of elasto-plastic large deflection analyses were performed to investigate into the influence of perforation on the buckling and ultimate strength of the perforated stiffened plate varying the cutout ratio, web height, thickness and type of cross-section by commercial FEA program(ANSYS). Closed-form formulas for predicting the ultimate strength of the perforated stiffened plate are empirically derived by curve fitting based on the Finite Element Analysis results. These formulas are used to evaluate the ultimate strength, which showed good correlation with FEM results. These results will be useful for evaluating the ultimate strength of the perforated stiffened plate in the preliminary design.

  • In the present paper, model tests of suppressing sloshing fitted with two perforated floating plates are carried out. The study involves identification of system performance such as the suppression and the solidity ratio. Three different solidity ratios of perforated plates have been tried out as potential positive slosh damping devices. A series of painstaking experiments have been conducted in a rigid rectangular tank on six degrees of freedom motion platform under roll harmonic excitation. Comparison of the clean tank shows that the three types of perforated plates are all effective on damping the run-up and impact pressure along the bulkhead. The parametric study indicates that the perforated plate with the median solidity ratio is the most optimal one in suppressing sloshing among three configurations.

  • In this study, an experimental research was performed to find the characteristics of the lateral load resistance of perforated steel plates which could be developed to retrofit existing RC framed buildings. The Specimens are tested with variables such as aspect ratio of plate, the ratio of perforation area, and the ratio of perforated diameter to strip which is more than 0.6. The lateral load was applied with displacement control until to reach 3.5% drift ratio. Through the experimental results, it was shown that the maximum strength of all specimens were reached at around 0.5% drift ratio and maintained until 3.5% drift ratio. From results, the modified strength prediction formula was derived with the variable ratio of the perforated diameter to strip. To evaluate seismic retrofit performance of RC frames using perforated steel plate, a simple design process was presented.

  • The equivalent electroacoustic circuit approach has been conventionally used for the analysis of the multiple layer perforated plate system. However, it is found that an analogy error has been involved in the equivalent electroacoustic approach proposed by previous researchers for the element of straight pipe. Although the pipe between the perforated layers is a distributed element in the analogy, it has been treated as a parallel element by previous investigators. The analogy error is demonstrated by comparing the calculated absorption coefficients based on the parallel circuit and the distributed circuit, respectively, with the measured values by the two-microphone impedance tube method.

  • The sound absorption coefficients for multiple layer perforated plate systems containing several companments with airspaces and porous absorbing materials are estimated using the transfer matrix method developed in the previous paper. The absorption coefficients from transfer matrix method agree well with the values measured by the two-microphone impedance tube method fur various combinations of perforated Plates, airspaces or porous materials. • Many studies for the perforated plates have been done, especially on the subject of static behavior and stress distribution in the plate. Equivalent elastic properties are one of the successive concepts for this problem. However little effort was taken to get their dynamic characteristics. In this paper finite element modal analysis was performed for the perforated plates having square and triangular hole patterns. An attempt to use existing equivalent elastic properties into the modal analysis of the plate was carried out. To verify feasibility of the finite element models, modal test was also performed on one typical perforated plate. System parameters such as natural frequencies and mode shapes were extracted and compared with the analysis results.

  • The nonlinear vibration of the thin perforated plate is analyzed in consideration of the V-shaped tension distribution and the effect of wire impact damping. The reduced order FEM model of the tension plate is obtained from dynamic condensation for the mass and stiffness matrices. Tension wire is modeled using the lumped parameter method to effectively describe its contact interactions with the plate. The nonlinear contact-impact model is composed of spring and damper elements, of which parameters are determined from the Hertzian contact theory and the restitution coefficient, respectively. From the evaluation of the computational accuracy and computation time for the deduced impact stiffness and damping coefficient, we determined proper values for the simulation works, accounting for the computational accuracy as well as the computational efficiency. Finally we discussed the results of nonlinear nitration analysis for variations of their design parameters.
