𝛽-Hydroxynitrile and 𝛽-ketonitrile were synthesized by the electrochemical oxidation of benzyl alcohol in an acetonitrile solvent. 𝛽-Hydroxynitrile was prepared by the reaction between benzaldehyde from the oxidation of benzyl alcohol and acetonitrile anion which was produced from the electrochemical reduction of acetonitrile. 𝛽-Hydroxynitrile was finally electrochemically converted into 𝛽-ketonitrile by applying 20 mA of current for 3 h. We demonstrated that 𝛽-hydroxynitrile or 𝛽-ketonitrile syntheses were prepared by electrochemical oxidation of benzyl alcohol with a commonly used Pt electrode at room temperature.
This study evaluates the ratio of Toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) functional group isocyanate (NCO) to the binder functional hydroxyl group (OH) in HTPB/AP/Al-based propellants on their mechanical properties, flow rate, and viscosity to determine the limitations of NCO/OH in the composition of solid propellants. The propellants consisted of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) polyurethane (PU), aluminum (Al) and tri-modal ammonium perchlorate (AP). The tri-modal AP consisted of 30% of coarse AP, 30% of medium AP, and 8% of fine AP. The ratio of NCO/OH varies from 0.73 to 0.85, with two binder percentages of 10.5% and 12%. An increase in NCO/OH ratio with 10.5% binder provided 20%, 95%, and 8 to 9% increments in UTS, modulus, and hardness, respectively. However, the propellant elongation, density, and flow rate decreased by 170%, 0.2%, and 11-12%, respectively. Viscosity increased 20% based on initial hour reading. The 12% binder provides 27%, 47%, and 5~6% an increment of UTS, modulus and hardness respectively. However, the propellant elongation, density, and flow rate decreased by 47%, 0.17% and 27%, respectively. The viscosity increased 30% based on initial hour reading. This study suggests the NCO/OH value of 0.77 and 10.5~11% binder content in propellant based on the mechanical properties, flow rate, and viscosity for better processing and pot life.

Six new binuclear copper(II) complexes have been prepared by template condensation of the dialdehydes 1,8-[bis(3-formyl-2-hydroxy-5-methyl)benzyl]-l,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (PC-a) and 1,8-[bis(3-formyl-2-hydroxy-5-bromo)benzyl]-l,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (PC-b) with appropriate aliphatic diamines, and copper(II) perchlorate. The structural features of the complexes have been confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis and mass spectra etc. The electrochemical behavior of all the copper(II) complexes show two irreversible one electron reduction process. The room temperature magnetic moment studies depict the presence of an antiferromagnetic interaction in the binuclear complexes. The catechol oxidation and hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenylphosphate were carried out by using the complexes as catalyst. The antimicrobial screening data show good results. The binding of the complexes to calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) has been investigated with absorption and emission spectroscopy. The complex [$Cu_2L^{1a}$] displays significant cleavage property of circular plasmid pBR322 DNA in to linear form. Spectral, electrochemical, magnetic and catalytic studies support the distortion of the copper ion geometry that arises as the macrocyclic ring size increases.
Analysis for the imidazoline type cationic surfactants was performed by the gas chromatography(GC) and high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). The composition of the alkyl chain distribution was investigated by GC after base/Acid hydrolysis of the imidazoline ring. The distribution of total alkyl chain was separated clearly by a Bondclone C18/NOVA-Pak C18 HPLC column using 50% acetonitrile in methanol containing 0.1M sodium perchlorate as a mobile phase. Alkyl chain distribution and average molecular weight of imidazoline type cationic surfactants were obtained based on these analytical methods. The agreement of results from GC and HPLC was good. The detection limit of imidazoline by HPLC method was 10ng without pretreatment.
A useful receptor for the sensing of ${CIO_4}^-$ species with remarkable selectivity has been developed. The hypersensitive interaction between a host and a guest has been investigated for the complex $[Pd(Me_4en)(Py_2S){\cdot}2ClO_4]_4$ ($Me_4en$ = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine; $Py_2S$ = 4,4'-dipyridyl sulfide). The pyridyl moiety of $Py_2S$ exhibits two sets of $^1H$ resonances that are delicately dependent upon temperature, concentration, and media. The nonrigidity has been explained in terms of an electrostatic equilibrium between the tetrameric host and the ${CIO_4}^-$ guest. The equilibrium is a useful method for the detection of ${CIO_4}^-$ anion with remarkable selectivity via "a restricted guest within a big host" in aqueous solution.

This study was done to find out the formation mechanism of chlorate by electrochemical process using chloride ion ($Cl^-$) as an electrolyte. Firstly, the effective factors such as pH and initial chloride concentration were figured out to see the formation property of chlorate during electrolysis. And the relation of free chlorine, and mixed oxidants such as OH radical and ozone with chlorate were estimated to concretize the formation mechanism. As a result, it was found that the major reaction of chlorate formation would be electrochemical reaction with free chlorine, and also the direct oxidation of chloride ion and the reaction by OH radical were participated in the formation of chlorate. Moreover, it was observed that formed chlorate was oxidized to perchlorate. Lastly, the optimum condition was recommended by comparing free chlorine with chlorate concentration during the electrochemical process with the different electrode separation.
Objectives: To find the potential acupuncture points by using Trypan blue staining on the skin of rat and Nude mouse. Methods: 0.4% Trypan blue was applied to the skin of rat or Nude mouse previously treated by surfactant. Washing by warm saline was followed after enough application of trypan blue and surfactant. Frequency of Trypan blue application should be varied to the experimental animals' condition for visualizing significant spots. Results: Blue spots appeared roughly in symmetry along kidney meridian or stomach meridian. Several spots outside of kidney or stomach meridian were also observed; however, the detail stereoscopic images of those blue spots were slightly different according to the position blue-colored. DiI signals were visualized along blood vessel after DiI injection into the Trypan blue-visualized blue spots. Conclusion: Our method to visualize the potential acupuncture points as a blue spot on rat and Nude mouse skins may contribute to the next step for finding specific flowing channels among blue spots.

In the solid rocket propellant combustion, the dynamic phase change from solid to liquid to vapor occurs across the melt layer. During the surface burning, liquid and gas phases are mixed in the intermediate zone between the propellant and the flame to form micro scale bubbles. The known thickness of the melt layer is approximately 1 micron at $10^5$ Pa. In this paper, we present a model of the melt layer structure and the dynamic motion of the melt front derived from the classical phase field theory. The model results show that the melt layer grows and propagates uniformly according to exp(-1/$T_s$) with $T_s$ being the propellant surface temperature.
DNA's were extracted from Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Mycobacterium phlei and the damaging cell walls of these microoragnisms were examined under an electron microscope in the extraction process in which a number of physico-chemical tratments of cells was involved. While the DNA was easily extracted from S. cerevisiae using conventional meylelded very little DNA, of M. phlei was extremely difficult to isolate and yielded very little DNA, applying various methods of isolation published earlier. When the cell walls of S. cerevisiae were examined with the electron microscope, they were not yet damaged even after the cells were treated with sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS) and ethylene diamine tetracetic acid(EDTA), but they were completely destroyed by the treatment of sodium perchlorate followed by the addition of chloroform and a vigorous agitation. Oozing cytoplasm through the broken cell walls was also observed. In the extraction of DNA from M.phlei, the pronase was not effective at the aerobic environment of the sample. When phenol was applied at the last step of DNA isolation, an extreme damage mass yielding little DNA into the solution. Unlike the cells of S.cerevisiae.M.phlei cells showed a tendency of aggregation, thus the destruction of cell walls by sodium hydroxide was seen only on the walls of peripheral cells in the aggregated mass, leaving the walls of the inner cells undamaged.

A potentiometric sensor based on the 1-benzyl-3-(4-nitrophenyl) thio-urea was synthesized and tested as an ionophore in PVC based membrane sensor towards $SCN^-$ ions. This membrane exhibits a linear stable response over a wide concentration range ($1.0{\times}10^{-5}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-2}M$) with a slope of -59.2 mV/dec., a detection limit of ${\log}[SCN^-]=-5.05$, and a selectivity coefficient for thiocyanate against perchlorate anion of ${\log}K^{pot}_{SCN^-j}=-0.133$. The selectivity series of the membrane is as follows: $SCN^-$ > $ClO_4{^-}$ > $I^-$ > $NO_3{^-}$ > $HSO_3{^-}$ > $Cl^-$ > $HSO_4{^-}$ > $F^-$ > $CH_3COO^-$ > $HCO_3{^-}$ > $Br^-$ > $H_2PO_4{^-}$ > $SO{_3}^{2-}$ > $SO{_4}^{2-}$ > $CO{_3}^{2-}$. The proposed electrode showed good selectivity and a good response for the $SCN^-$ ion over a wide variety of other anions in pH 6.0 buffer solutions and has a fast response time of about < 5s. The influences of the membrane by pH, ionophore, and plasticizer were studied.
