The purpose of this study was to investigate whether CPAP therapy was effective for reducing the degree of hypernasality in individuals with repaired cleft palate and whether the efficacy of CPAP therapy was maintained. Five individuals with cleft palate participated in an 8-week home-based CPAP program. Results from perceptual evaluation of hypernasality and nasalance scores before and after CPAP therapy and at the follow-up speech evaluation were compared. The results of the study showed that the responses of the CPAP therapy were various among individuals. Three individuals exhibited reductions in the degree of perceived hypernasality, while nasalance scores in all individuals decreased after the therapy. The results showed that the effect of CPAP therapy was generally maintained until approximately three months after the completion of CPAP therapy.
In the speech system, for example hearing aid as well as speech communication, speech quality is degraded by environmental noise. In this study, to enhance the speech quality which is degraded by environmental speech, we proposed an algorithm to reduce the noise and reinforce the speech. The minima controlled recursive averaging (MCRA) algorithm is used to estimate the noise spectrum and spectral weighting factor is used to reduce the noise. And partial masking effect which is one of the human hearing properties is introduced to reinforce the speech. Then we compared the waveform, spectrogram, Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) and segmental Signal to Noise Ratio (segSNR) between original speech, noisy speech, noise reduced speech and enhanced speech by proposed method. As a result, enhanced speech by proposed method is reinforced in high frequency which is degraded by noise, and PESQ, segSNR is enhanced. It means that the speech quality is enhanced.
In this studies, subjective evaluation of heavy-weight floor impact sound through classification was conducted. Heavyweight impact sounds generated by an impact ball were recorded through dummy heads in apartment buildings. The recordings were classified according to the frequency characteristics of the floor impact sounds which are influenced by the floor structure with different boundary conditions and composite materials. The characteristics of the floor impact noise were investigated by paired comparison tests and semantic differential tests. Sound sources for auditory experiment were selected based on the actual noise levels with perceptual level differences. The results showed that roughness and fluctuation strength as well as loudness of the heavy-weight impact noise had a major effect on annoyance.
In this paper, several experiments are performed according to deep neural network (DNN) based features for the performance comparison of speaker verification (SV) systems. To this end, input features for a DNN, such as mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC), linear-frequency cepstral coefficient (LFCC), and perceptual linear prediction (PLP), are first compared in a view of the SV performance. After that, the effect of a DNN training method and a structure of hidden layers of DNNs on the SV performance is investigated depending on the type of features. The performance of an SV system is then evaluated on the basis of I-vector or probabilistic linear discriminant analysis (PLDA) scoring method. It is shown from SV experiments that a tandem feature of DNN bottleneck feature and MFCC feature gives the best performance when DNNs are configured using a rectangular type of hidden layers and trained with a supervised training method.
In this paper production and perception data were examined to discover what acoustic features are used in distinguishing wh-questions and yes/no-questions. Production data show that the two question types are distinguished by different accentual phrasing, pitch ranges in wh-phrases, and initial lenis stop voicing of the first syllable in verb phrases. Perception data by synthetic intonation show that the two question types are distinguished by the width of pitch ranges between the first and the second syllable in wh-phrases. Initial lenis stop voicing of the first syllable in verb phrases produces a strong effect on the perceptual discrimination of the two question types.
The purpose of this study is to observe how Korean listeners detect a target phoneme with 'Focus' represented by prosodic prominence and question-induced semantic emphasis. According to the automated phoneme detection task using E-Prime, Korean listeners detected phoneme targets more rapidly when the target-bearing words were in prominence position and in question-induced position. However, when phoneme targets were in prominence position, response time was much faster than in question-induced position. The results suggest that the prosodic prominence which is explicit method of focus representation be more effective than question-inducing, implicit method of it, in phoneme detecting.
In this paper, we present a new synthetic high coding method which gives high image compression ratio. Given an image, only its low-pass component is transmitted by DCT coding` the high-pass component is not transmitted but synthesized using edge sharpening on the reconstructed low-pass image at the receiver. For the DCT coding which is used to encode the low-pass image, we used an improved version of Cox's variance estimator. Also, introduced are new image quality measures called GSNR and EPR which emphasize perceptual aspects of image quality. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed synthetic high coding is better in various quality measures than that of Cox's adaptive transform coding. Also, it yields acceptable image quality with neither apparent block effect nor visible granular noise even at high compression ratio of about 30:1.
It is believed that visual exposure to nature in the interior environment can make human healthier. But little about the effect of visual environment on human health is known. This article employs some existing evidences that perceptual experience of natural elements in the interior environment could reduce mental fatigue. The results of this article are shown as follows: First, the perception of natural elements is a physiological activity in terms of psychological health. Secondly, the visual stimulation of nature provoking proper arouse helps psychological balance. The aim of this article is to provoke further thinking and research on this possibility that visual exposure to nature may make people healthier.
The present study investigates how consumers' construal level affects their variety seeking behavior when choosing multiple items simultaneously. Especially the authors focus on the perceptual level at which variety seeking takes place and propose that variety seeking can take place not only at brand level but also at category or subcategory level. Categorical variety seeking refers to diversification of one's choices over multiple brands not within the same category but across multiple categories. Building on construal level theory, the authors expected that people engaging in higher-level construals tend to subcategorize the choice set and distribute their choices across more subcategories and designed four experiments to test the related hypotheses. The experimental results showed that consumers' construal level can affect the level at which variety seeking takes place and those with higher construal level tend to choose options seemingly more dissimilar to each other.
