This study was conducted to examine how Korean elderly perceive elements of successful aging, and to explore the meanings of a successful life in the contexts of the life experiences of the Korean elderly. From life-contextual perspectives, this study explored differences in perception on successful aging by gender and by class (economic status). Forty elderly persons aged 65 and over participated in this study. The data on the perceptions of successful aging in their own life contexts were collected through in-depth interviews. The major result of this study indicates that there are differences in the key theme of successful aging by class (economic status), because cultural and economic contexts influenced the elderly persons' perception of successful aging. This study will help researchers, educators, and practitioners to understand successful aging experience as well as establish the concept of successful aging among Koreans.
The purpose of this study is to examine the factors affecting perceptions of successful aging and preparations for the later life among the baby boom cohort. The subject of survey is the baby boomer(from 1955 to 1963) and it was done from May 1 to September 15 in 2016. 814 self-reported questionnaires were used for final analysis by SPSS WIN18. The major results of this study were as follows: First, there were differences in the perception of successful aging by education level, subjective awareness of economic status, subjective awareness of health condition, marriage status. Second, there were differences in the preparations for the later life by education level, job, subjective awareness of economic status, subjective awareness of health condition. The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the baby boomers' perception of and preparation for their successful aging. Seven women and three men were interviewed with the use of an unstructured questionnaire. Their perceptions of their likelihood of future successful aging were not negative, and were influenced by a range of considerations that included health, leisure, finance, volunteer services, family relationships, and elderly life without children's supports. They tried to prepare several kinds of sports, leisure activities, and volunteer services for their elderly life. However, their reasons for preparing these activities varied, and the background of their differences consisted of the family background, personal values, and experiences. Moreover, men and women responded differently to their personal experiences as they related to their elderly life. Women were likely to match their family relationship with their perception and preparation for successful aging, and men were not.
Academic research of the elderly psychology flourishes in an aging society. The basic concern of both psycho-gerontology dealing with psychological processes of aging and geronto-psychology dealing with psychology of the elderly is with the maintenance of high quality of life and well-being. Given this context, the present study examined research trends of 91 depression and suicide studies and 31 aging and successful aging studies, and compared the trends with those identified in studies published within the first 30 years. It was found that a majority of studies are concerned with the direct or mediating effects of depression on suicide and everyday life, risk factors influencing depression, perceptions of aging and factors influencing those perceptions, and successful aging and factors influencing successful aging. Further, the number of studies of these topics is greater than that of studies published within the first 30 years. The findings were discussed in the context of heightening the quality of life of the older adults.

This research was conducted to examine successful aging and influencing factors in middle aged women. Data were collected from 189 middle-aged women in two cities. Data were collected from July to August 2017 using structured questionnaires. Data collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analysis. The results indicate that the perception of successful aging mean was 128.49 points (range: 33-165). Depression (r=-.20, p=.005) had a significant negative association with perception of successful aging. Family resilience (r=.49, p<.001) and life satisfaction (r=.54, p<.001) were positively correlated with perception of successful aging. The significant predictors of successful aging were age (${\ss}=-.15$, p=.013), family resilience (${\ss}=.24$, p=.002), and life satisfaction (${\ss}=.37$, p<.001), explaining 33.9% of the variance. Based on the study results, we suggest that it is necessary to develop and apply educational strategy to improve perception of successful aging.
Ageism, attitudes toward aging, and body satisfaction play significant roles in determining older women's perceptions of successful aging. In addition, subjective socioeconomic and health status can act as major identifiers in determining the overall level of physical and social well-being in old age. Research for this exploratory study includes: 1) exploring the overall levels of ageism perception, attitudes toward aging, and body satisfaction among older women and 2) identifying the differences in ageism, attitudes toward aging, and body satisfaction between high and low subjective socioeconomic and health status of older women. Data for this study were collected through an online questionnaire of 221 older women. The results revealed that older women's perceptions of ageism, aging attitudes, and body satisfaction were significantly different based on subjective socioeconomic and health status. In general, older women with higher levels of subjective socioeconomic and health status reported more positive perceptions and attitudes toward aging along with higher levels of body satisfaction. The results implied that subjective health status was a more powerful indicator differentiating the aging-related perceptions of older women than the subjective socioeconomic status. This study supports the need for a conscious effort to reduce ageism that ultimately improves the overall well-being of all members in society.
The perception of aging experience and successful aging depends on birth cohort as Korean society has rapidly changed for the last several decades. This article aims to empirically explain inter-generational difference in the perceptions of successful aging with an emphasis on the social relationships using a national survey data set by face-to-face interviews with a structured questionnaire. The respondents are classified into colony war, restoration, democratization, and information generation. Major findings are as follows: The perceptive differences are found between colony war and restoration generation, and democratization and information generation. The difference are clear in the aspects of expectation for children and parents-children relationship. The inter-generational difference remains even after controlling other relevant factors. Policies and programs, therefore, should 1) attempt to help inter-generational understanding, and 2) consider the yet-existing uniqueness of each generation.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate expectations regarding aging by middle-aged women in the community, and identify factors contributing to their expectations about aging. Methods: Participants in the survey for this study were 303 middle-aged women from community health centers and religious facilities in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, and Chungcheongbuk Province. Data were collected from March 2 to April 17, 2012 using self-report structured questionnaires. The instruments were the Health Perceptions, Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES), Family APGAR, Expectations Regarding Aging (ERA-12). The data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression with IBM SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results: Perceived health status (${\beta}$=0.16, p=.009) and self-esteem (${\beta}$=0.20, p=.001) of middle-aged women were identified as significant predictors of expectations regarding aging, after adjusting for age, education, occupation, monthly income and menstrual status. Conclusion: These results suggest that nurses should make an effort to improve expectations about aging among middle-aged women. Ultimately, community health programs for middle aged women need to be developed to achieve successful aging.
Purpose: This study investigated Korean women in between age 30 to 60 who were obese or overweight in order to explore their self-perception based on lifetime phase. Methods: Focus group interviews were performed four times with six to eight participants in each group (a total of 27). Data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Results: The data analysis from the interviews revealed recurring common themes: heavy heart, heavy body, resigned acceptance of their own condition, and compromise. The study also found that each age group had different concerns: concerning others' gaze on their obese appearances (30s), realizing their aging obese appearances (40s), recognizing red flags of their health with obesity (50s), and becoming ambivalent about their obese appearances (60s). Overall, their perceptions of being overweight were negative and stressful. Women in their 30s and 40s were more interested in their appearances, and thus were more obsessive about weight gain. In contrast, women in their 50s and 60s were more accepting of their physical appearances, and thus were more concerned about living healthy than losing weight. Conclusion: These results may be useful to consider when developing tailored weight-control programs for obese and overweight Korean women. Additionally, strategic approaches for successful and effective programs targeting healthy weight should be based on better understanding about women's self-perceptions and motivations.
