  • This study aims to examine the characteristics of the changes in residents' perception of neighborhood and sense of neighborhood according to the residential structural changes caused by city renewal projects such as old urban large redevelopment. Research findings benefits of the residential environment changes after the development are environment improvement, convenient traffic, leisure activity increase, and green area increase, whereas their drawbacks are encroachment of sunshine and view, However, with the regard to the relationship with neighbors, paired-sample t-test results showed there were no statistically significant differences between before and after the development. It appeared to be that the community residential complex development did not influence the relationship with neighbors. ANOVA was used to examine the differences in the neighborhood perception among age categories. The results showed that there were no differences between age groups but when there were changes in their life cycle, residents showed differences in their neighborhood perception among age groups. The neighborhood perception was measured on 5-point Likert Scale in four factors of intimacy, participation, reliability, and group identity. The perception decreased somewhat after the development and the group identity, especially, showed a significant difference (p<.001). This was considered to be caused by a sense of incongruity due to the influx of different social-economic groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate self perception of occlusal status and recognition for orthodontic treatment as well as the prevalence of orthodontic treatment need objectively and subjectively. 3979 (male 2107, female 1872) school students of age 7~18 were analyzed by questionnaire and clinical examination and the results were as follows, 1. Perception of occlusal status on one's own was more generous than that of orthodontist's and it was affected by the factors such as age, patterns of malocclusion. 2. Recogniuon of subjective need for orthodontic treatment was more generous than that of objective need for the treatment, and factors such as age and sex of patient, parents' age and rate of education, income, occupation, classification of malocclusion and regional discrepancy were influenced. 3. Negative aspect of orthodontic treatment was influenced by the environmental factors. 4. A survey of want for orthodontic treatment showed one's alteration in recognition of the occlusal status with age and esthetic component was much more emphasized than functional component. 5. The multivariate discriminanat analysis for orthodontic treatment group showed that mother's rate of education, classification of malocclusion, demographic characteristics were critical in the determination of treatment group. 6. Test of inter-examiner reliability showed moderate coincidence.

The data were obtained through 318 samples of rural women under sixty years old who work full-time at their farms with their husbands. The questionnaire employed Likert-type scale with four-point, and then the data were analyzed by statistical methods of frequency, percentage, mean score, analysis of variance, t-test and Duncan test through SAS program. The significance level was p < .05. The results of this study are as follows ; 1) The average stress level of rural women was over 2.9 points out of 4. 2) The stress level showed meaningful correlation with such variables as age, education, perception on economic status, and recognition by their husbands and other family members. The rural women who are over forty years old, below high school, disregarded from their family members were marked high stress level. 3) The level of rural women's stress coping strategies was quite as low as 1.95 out of 4. 4) The level of coping strategies showed meaningful correlation with such socio-demographic variables as age, perception on economic status and job satisfaction level. • The shock of melamine-contained food has been known with the incident of hospitalization or death of infants at the age of 11-month old in China. The purpose of this study was to examine consumers' risk perception, attitude and purchase behavior of melamine-contained food which recently came to the fore as a social issue, focusing on the relationship between consumers' attitude and purchase behavior based on physical risk, social risk, psychological risk, financial risk, consumers' attitude and purchase behavior. Study findings are as follows. First, the four factors of risk perception of melamine-contained food were significantly different by consumers. Consumers regarded social risk as most significant and it was followed by financial risk and psychological risk. And they regarded physical risk as most insignificant. Second, as for the difference of risk perception by demographic features, such factors as gender, age, marital status and schooling had no statistically significant influence. Third, the potential risk of melamine-contained food had a negative influence upon consumers' attitude and purchase behavior. In addition, consumers' attitude and purchase behavior were decided by perceived risks. This finding implies that consumers' attitude can accompany with negative or positive behavior and consumers' behavior can be related to social, financial and physical risks. Because the risk perception of melamine-contained food can cause consumers' distrust about all kinds of food in general, domestic manufacturers of milk product-contained confectionery and food can be harmed. In order to overcome this problem and make consumers purchase all the milk products and milk-contained food without fear, governmental agencies must reestablish systems with which the safety of imported raw materials and its processing can be insured and manufactures must improve the quality of products in a diverse and discriminative manner. This study seems to be meaningful in that it examined consumers' risk perception of melamine-contained food, a current social issue, and then looked into the influence of risk perception upon consumers" attitude and behavior, thus presenting the strategy of reestablishing the system of relationship between consumers and business entities in a desirable manner.

  • Objective: This questionnaire study aimed to estimate the overall frequencies of positive perception towards orthodontic treatment among adults categorized according to age, sex, and area of living, and to identify barriers or negative perceptions preventing them from receiving orthodontic treatment. Methods: The participants included 598 adults aged over 20 years (230 men and 368 women) who visited the Dental Hospital of Seoul St. Mary's Hospital. The participants' opinions regarding their consideration of receiving orthodontic treatment were recorded using a specially designed questionnaire. Results: The overall rate of positive perception towards orthodontic treatment was 48.5%. Compared to adults in their 20s (63.2%), those in their 40s and 50s had a lower percentage of interest in orthodontic treatment (46.2% and 45.1%, respectively; p < 0.05). Overall, women (52.2%) had a higher rate of interest than did men (42.6%; p < 0.05). The area of living had no effect on the percentage of interest. The order of priority of chief complaints differed according to age: protrusion for those in the 20s and 30s, and spacing for those in the 40s to 60s. Overall, the main reason for not seeking treatment was the treatment fee. Respondents aged over 40 considered themselves "too old" for orthodontic treatment. Conclusions: The middle-aged had a relatively high percentage of interest (above 45%) in orthodontic treatment. However, demographic characteristics were not significantly associated with the positive interest. These results highlight the need for educating the middle-aged about the limitations and possibilities of orthodontic treatment to increase its acceptance.

  • This study was to investigate the dffects of a color reversal visual perceptual training program on spastic cerebral palsied children's figure-ground discrimination disabilities and to investigate the difference between the control group and experimental group. Subjects of the study were composed of children with spastic cerebral palsy whose age varied from five to seven years old, whose I.Q. was over 70 and whose P.Q. was over 70. Implication of this study can be summarized as follows; First, Perceptual training and speech training programs should be emphasized to improve the preparative ability of spastic cerebral palsied children. Problems of perception cerebral palsied children are concerned with figure-ground discrimination disability. Second, Though it was demonstrated that color reversal visual perceptual training program can be effective through the prestudies and this study, more researches should be made to apply this kind of theory in real education environments. More interest in different color forms for training of cerebral palsied children should be taken. Third, Reprecations of the study should be considered with modified group identities(age, I.Q., P.Q.).

  • It has long been known that high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (HFHL) can contribute to difficulty in speech understanding by elderly listeners. This study evaluated the relative contribution of HFHL and age to speech understanding. Subjects included adult middle-aged and old groups with normal hearing or with limited HFHL. The Hearing-in-Noise-Test (HINT) was used to measure speech perception performance in quiet and in noise. The middle-aged groups showed significant effects of HFHL for speech intelligibility in quiet and in noise, but the old groups showed the difference in quiet only due to high frequency hearing. The results suggest that HFHL may affect speech intelligibility differently with age and therefore hearing aid selection needs to take into account the influence of age.
