The data were included articles on clothing construction published in the five major journals from 2000 through 2008 in Korea. The identified 513 articles were categorized in eight areas: design related clothing construction, study of body types, study of patterns, size of apparel, fitting of clothing, protective clothing and functional clothing, sewing and the others. In the results of examining the percentage of articles on clothing construction among articles published in each journal, the percentage of articles on clothing construction was highest as 21.2% in the Journal of Korean Home Economics and next, 19.3% in the Research Journal of the Costume Culture. As to the percentage of research on clothing construction according to theme, research on protective clothing and functional clothing were largest as 28.2%, and next, research on body types as 18.9%, and research on garment size systems as 10.5%. Research on protective clothing has increased remarkably since 2000, and particularly in 2004 it was so active that it occupied 44.1% of research on clothing construction. Next, with regard to the subjects of research, research with female subjects was more frequent than that with male subjects according to gender, and research with men and women in their twenties was most frequent according to age. These results show somewhat unbalanced tendencies in terms of research subjects.

  • Seam puckering and the seam strength of conductive threads used to produce smart clothing were analyzed according to stitching methods and fabrics. Samples were prepared in a lock stitch and zigzag stitch on plain woven and jersey knit fabric, using one type of polyester sewing thread and three types of commercial conductive threads that consisted of two types of stainless-steel conductive threads (TST and MST) and one type of silver conductive thread (SSV). Seam pucker percentages, shapes, and seam strength were measured. On plain woven fabric as well as jersey knit fabric, three-ply TST and MST showed a higher SP percentage compared to a polyester sewing thread. Meanwhile, single-ply SSV showed the lowest SP percentage. In addition, the SP percentage of the zigzag stitch decreased along the weft and course directions of the fabric, and decreased significantly as the number of fabric layers increased. Moreover, there was a marked tendency for a higher SP percentage in jersey knit fabric compared to plain woven fabric, and the two-dimensional cross-section waveforms of stitches obtained using three-dimensional data that showed increased irregular waveforms and peaks in the zigzag stitch. There were no correlations between seam strength and tensile strength.

  • In the present study we examined clothing expenditure patterns and related variables in Korea. In addition we analyzed the differences of clothing expenditure patterns between overall overspenders and non-overspenders. We use the Family Income and Expenditure Study published by the National Statistical Office of Korea. Double logarithm functional forms were used to adjust the normality of sample distribution and multiple regression analyses and t-test were utilized as a statistical tools. The present study was divided into four folders. First the income elasticity of clothing expenditures was examined by different groups such as age job and education levels of households as percentage change of clothing expenditures to a percentage change of income. Second to analyze the effects of demogtraphic and socio-economic variables on clothing expenditure we utlized the standardized coefficients in the separate regression equation by demographic and socio-economic variables. Third using spending to income ratio we investigated the differnces of the clothing expenditure patterns between overall overspenders and non-overspenders. Fourth the effects of independent variables by ovespenders and non-overspenders werediscussed.
