Spray Characteristics of a Liquid-fueled Ramjet Engine under High Pressure Air Condition (고압 유동조건에서의 액체 램제트 엔진의 분무특성)

  • In a liquid-fueled ramjet engine, the insufficient mixing and evaporation result in the low combustion efficiency and combustion instability. Improving its characteristics and devising a means of fuel droplets with air may compensate these disadvantages of liquid fuel ramjet engine. The jet penetrations of various fuel injectors were measured to investigate the spray characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine under high pressure air-stream conditions. The penetrations in high pressure conditions are smaller than the values calculated from Inamura's or Lee's equations, and the jet penetrations in the high pressure conditions have a similar tendency. In the dual orifice injectors, the jet penetrations of rare orifice is rapidly increased due to the reduction of the drag, which is created by the jet column of front orifice. The jet penetration of rare orifice is increased because of the drag reduction created by the jet column of the front orifice. Because of the drag reduction formed by the column of jet, the jet penetration in the rear orifice of dual orifice injector is much larger than the jet penetrations of single orifice injector. As the distances of the orifice are increased, the jet penetrations of the rear orifice decrease.

  • The head penetrations for control rod drive mechanism and instrumentation systems are installed at the reactor pressure vessel head of PWRs. Primary coolant water and the operating conditions of PWR plants can cause cracking of these nickel-based alloy through a process called primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC). Inspection of the head penetrations to ensure the integrity of the head penetrations has been interested since reactor coolant leakages were found at U. S. reactors in 2000 and 2001. The complex geometry of the head penetrations and the very low echo amplitude from the fine, multiple flaws due to the nature of the see made it difficult to detect and size the flaws using conventional pulse-echo UT methods. Time-of-flight-diffraction technique, which utilizes the time difference between the flaw tips while pulse-echo does the flaw response amplitude from the flaw, has been selected for this inspection for it's best performance of the detection and sizing of the head penetration see flaws. This study defines the limits of the detectable and accurately sizable minimum flaw size which can be detected by the General TOFD and the Delta TOFD techniques for circumferentially and axially oriented flaws respectively. These results assures the reliability of the inspection techniques to detect and accurately size for various kind of flaws, and will also be utilized for the future development and qualifications of the TOFD techniques to enhance the detecting sensitivity and sizing accuracy of the flaws of the reactor head penetrations in nuclear power plants.

  • Nuclide release through penetrations in radioactive waste container is analyzed. Penetrations may result from corrosion or cracking and may be through the container material or through deposits of corrosion products. The analysis deals with the resultant nuclide release, but not with the way these penetrations occur. Numerical illustrations show that mass transport from multiple holes can be significant and may approach the mass transfer rate calculated from bare waste forms. Although partially-failed containers may present an important long-term barrier to release of radionuclides, numerous small holes on a container surface have the potential of bypassing the effectiveness of these barriers.

  • The reactor pressure vessel head of PWR has penetrations for control rod drive mechanism and instrumentation systems. The Primary coolant water and operating temperature can cause the stress-corrosion cracking of these nickel-based alloy penetrations. It is difficult to detect and size flaws such as SCC in the reactor head penetrations using conventional W methods because of complex geometry, Therefore, the utilities are using the TOFD technique for the detection and sizing of the flaw. This study shows the correlation between the ultrasonic wave direction and the orientation of the flaw and the range of flaw depth which can be detected by the TOFD techniques.

  • In this paper, spray and combustion characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine were experimentally investigated. The spray penetrations were measured to clarify the spray characteristics of a liquid jet injected transversely into the subsonic vitiated airstream, which Is maintained a high velocity and temperature. The spray penetrations are increased with decreasing airstream velocity, increasing airstream temperature, and increasing air-fuel momentum ratio. To compensate our results of penetrations, the new experimental equation were modified from Inamura's equation. In the case of insufficient penetration, the combustion phenomenon in ram-combustor were unstable. Therefore, the sufficient penetration must be considered to make a stable flame.

  • In this paper, spray and combustion characteristics of a liquid-fueled ramjet engine were experimentally investigated. The spray penetrations were measured to clarify the spray characteristics of a liguid jet injected transversely into the subsonic vitiated airstream, which is maintained a high velocity and temperature. The spray penetrations are increased with decreasing airstream velocity, increasing airstream temperature, and increasing air-fuel momentum ratio. To compensate our results of penetrations, the new experimental equation were modified from Inamura's equation. In the case of insufficient penetration, the combustion phenomenon in ram-combustor were unstable. Therefore, the temperature distribution was slanted to the low wall of the ram-combustor. These trends gradually disappeared as the length and air temperature of the combustor became longer. Combustion efficiency increased when the length of the combustor was long and the air temperature was high.   • Variable weld bead penetrations related to the base metal chemistry of stainless steels in GTA welding have been under constant investigations due to their industrial implications. It has been proposed that among other elements, the sulfur content of steels determines the weld pool geometry, particularly its penetration. It is suggested that the surface tension temperature gradient of steels becomes positive with appropriate dosing in sulfur and results in inward melt flow, propitious for deeper welds. However, the chemistry of industrial steels is complex due to the presence of multiple minor elements either deliberately added or remnant impurity traces. With this in view, investigations on 41 austenitic and nine martensitic stainless steels were carried to see if there existed any possible relation between the weld profile and some of the designated elements. The results suggest no direct correlation between sulfur or any other major or trace element and weld penetration. At first glance the results are contradictory to what is often asserted.

  • The hybrid thin-film (HTF) passivation layer composed of the UV curable acrylate layer and MS-31 (MgO:SiO2=3:1wt%) layer was adopted in organic light emitting diode (OLED) to protect organic light emitting materials from penetrations of oxygen and water vapors. The moisture resistance of the deposited HTF layer was measured by the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR). The results showed that the HTF layer possessed a very low WVTR value of lower than $0.007g/m^2$ per day at $37.8^{\circ}C$ and 100% RH. Therefore, the HTF on the OLED was found to be very effective in protect what from the penetrations of oxygen and moisture.

  • This work was conducted to figure out the atomization characteristics of three types of bio-diesel fuels using a common-rail injection system. The process of spray development was visualized by using a spray visualization system composed of a Nd:YAG laser and an ICCD camera, The spray tip penetrations were analyzed based on the frozen images from the spray visualization system. On the other hand, the microscopic atomization characteristics such as the distributions of SMD and axial mean velocity were measured by using a phase Doppler particle analyzer system, It is revealed that the sprays of the bio-diesel fuels have larger SMD than that of diesel fuel mainly due to high viscosity of bio-diesel. Different characteristics of bio-diesel fuels were also measured in spray tip penetrations according to the fuels and mixing ration.
