  • The purpose of this study is to compare the cementation effect on cone resistance and DMT indices and to evaluate the deformation characteristic of cemented sand using cone resistance and dilatometer modulus. Specimens of various relative densities with three different cementation levels are prepared in a large calibration chamber under different vertical stress levels. Test result shows that the cone resistance and dilatometer modulus underestimate the deformation modulus of cemented sand, since in situ penetration tests such as CPT and DMT damage the cementation bonds during penetration. By regression analysis, the constrained modulus of cemented sand is related with the cone resistance and the dilatometer modulus.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical and durability characteristics of latex-modified concrete using ultra rapid hardening cement : four types of mechanical tests including compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, flexural strength and bond strength were performed; and seven types of durability tests including resistance of concrete to chloride ion penetration, freeze-thaw resistance, scaling resistance, coefficient of thermal expansion, cracking tendency, abrasion resistance and drying shrinkage were performed. Required material performance of each test was determined in accordance with the Korea specification for repair of concrete and pavement repairing materials. The test results satisfied the required material performances, and presented a good mechanical and durability characteristics. In particularly, the materials showed early development of compressive strength, flexural strength and bond strength at 3 and 4 hours after curing. SEM photos were also taken to investigate the micro structures of the materials after chloride ion penetration test.

  • The constrained modulus, representative property to evaluate compressibility of soil, is needed to estimate the settlement of ground structure. A series of lab and field cone penetration tests for clayey soil of Busan new-port and Noksan industrial area were conducted to evaluate the estimation method of constrained modulus. Since CPT generates large deformation of ground, it is difficult to correlate the cone resistance with the constrained modulus. Therefore, appropriate correlation between them is essential to estimate the constrained modulus based on CPT results. The test results show that the ratio of the constrained modulus to the cone resistance is inversely proportional with plasticity index. Based on this result, the estimation method of constrained modulus for Busan clay is suggested.

  • The present study is focused on the mechanical and durability properties of ternary blended cement concrete mix of different grades 30 MPa, 50 MPa and 70 MPa. Three mineral admixtures (fly ash, silica fume and lime sludge) were used as a partial replacement of cement in the preparation of blended concrete mix. The durability of ternary blended cement concrete mix was studied by exposing it to acids HCl and $H_2SO_4$ at 5% concentration. Acid mass loss factors (AMLF), acid strength loss factor (ASLF) and acid durability factor (ADF) were determined, and the results were compared with the control mix. Chloride ions penetration was investigated by conducting rapid chlorination penetration test and accelerated corrosion penetration test on control mix and ternary blended cement concrete. From the results, it was evident that the usage of these mineral admixtures is having a beneficiary role on the strength as well as durability properties. The results inferred that the utilization of these materials as a partial replacement of cement have significantly enhanced the compressive strength of blended concrete mix in 30 MPa, 50 MPa and 70 MPa by 42.95%, 32.48% and 22.79%. The blended concrete mix shown greater resistance to acid attack compared to control mix concrete. Chloride ion ingress of the blended cement concrete mix was low compared to control mix implying the beneficiary role of mineral admixtures.

  • We have conducted standard penetration tests and static cone penetration tests that are widely used the land base examination on the soft ground subsurface of Yongdong area, and examined the correlation between them. We have also made a comparative analysis of the correlation between the indoor tests on the materials collected on the site and on-the-spot penetration tests. The results are as follows : The relationship between Standard Penetration Test N-value and Dutch Cone Tset show $Q_c=1.93N+0.29$ for organic soil, $Q_c=2.19N+0.20$ for clay, $Q_c=2.34N+1.06$ for silt, $Q_c=3.02N+0.54$ for silty sand, and $Q_c=3.47N+0.46$ for sand. In this case of sand $Q_c/N$ increases when the soil particles are larger. The relationship between standard penetration test N-value and Unconfined Compression Strength $q_u$ show $q_u=0.11N+0.03$ for organic soil, $q_u=0.11N+0.25$ for clay, and $q_u=0.18N-0.03$ for silt.

  • The building that supply tidal and splash zone was constructed near Seamangeum Gate Bridge. The specimens that will be tested for maintenance of gate bridge were exposed on the tidal and splash zone, totally about 650. The characteristics of strength, salt penetration profile, field application of surface repair material and section recover material will be acquired by periodical test. The program was developed to obtain optimal maintenance strategy of gate bridge as a marine concrete structure and to deposit experimental data, lab. test result, field test result, on its D/B. On this paper, the comparison of concrete and recover material in the salt penetration characteristics was expressed. The quantitative analysis of salt contents in concrete surface was most important so the improvement for the machine of gathering power of concrete and the apparatus of measuring chloride contents was proceeded at this time. The two conclusions were summarized like as - The resistance of chloride attack of concrete was appeared 2.5 times bigger than that of recover material - The resistance of chloride attack of polymer series was appeared more higher than that of others.

  • The cone penetration test(CPT) has gained its popularity in site characterization indebted by its reliability, speed, economy, and automatic measurement system since its development in the 1930s. The CPT results, commonly consisting of cone tip resistance, sleeve friction, and pore water pressure measurements, allow us to classify soils as well as to reveal their engineering characteristics. The site condition at which the CPT is allowable is often dependent on the capacity of a CPT system. In Korea, it has been considered that the CPT could be appled only to soft soils in most cases because CPT systems available for stiff soils are very rare due to their expensive procurement and maintenance cost. Luoisiana Transportation Research Center(LTRC) has developed and implemented a field-rugged continuous intrusion miniature cone penetration test(CIMCPT) system since the late 1990s. The miniature cone penetrometer has a sectional cone area of $2cm^2$ allowing system capacity reduction compared to the standard $10cm^2$ cone penetrometer. The continuous intrusion mechanism allows fast and economic site investigation. Samsung Engineering & Construction has recently developed and implemented a similar CIMCPT system based on its original version developed in LTRC. The performance of the Samsung CIMCPT system has been investigated by calibration with the standard CPT system at a well-characterized test site in Pusan, Korea. In addition, scale effect between the miniature cone penetrometer and the standard cone penetrometer has been investigated by comparing the field test results using the both systems.

  • To improve the accuracy of the standard penetration test (SPT) results, smart measurement system, which considers the energy transfer ratio into the sampler (ETRSampler), is required. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of joints and rod length on the transferred energy into the sampler. The energy transfer ratios into the rod head (ETRHead) and ETRSampler, and the energy ratio from the head to the sampler (ERHS) were obtained using energy modules, which were installed at the rod head and above the SPT sampler. Linear regression analyses are conducted to correlate the ERHS with the number of joints, rod length, and SPT N-values. In addition, the dynamic resistances are calculated using both transferred energies into the rod head and into the sampler, and are compared with the corrected cone tip resistance measured from the cone penetration test (CPT). While the ETRHead are generally constant, but the ETRSampler and ERHS gradually decrease along the depth or the number of joints, except at certain depths with high SPT N-values. Thus, the ERHS can be estimated using the number of joints, rod length, and SPT N-values. The dynamic resistance evaluated by ESampler produces a better correlation with the corrected cone tip resistance than that by EHead. This study suggests that transferred energy into the SPT sampler may be effectively used for more accurate subsurface characterization.

  • At the green roof on the concrete structure, root penetration can be the most problem to water leakage. Root occur cracks due to penetrate to concrete which have porous organization by itself. Crack on the concrete structure would be constantly shrinks and expands, it occur to water leakage and decrease durability of concrete structure. Therefore, in this paper, the result of the root penetration test for waterproofing which protect concrete structure from the water leakage or other environment conditions would be apply to understand the reason of root penetration.
