This paper describes the characteristic analysis of ice impact force for the Arctic structure shape. In the present study an energy method has been used to predict the impact force during the ice-structure collision. This study also employs two concepts for reference contact area and normalized stress in analysis procedure. The influences of factors, such as impact velocity, full penetration depth, structure shape and ice floe size, are investigated. Full penetration occurs, particularly at lower impact velocity when ice thickness increase. But "typical size" ice floe does not expected ever to achieve full penetration during the impact procedure. The structure shape is the dominant factor in ice impact force characteristic. The results for various ice-structure collision scenarios are analyzed.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the push-out bond strength and dentinal tubule penetration of root canal sealers used with coated core materials and conventional gutta-percha. Materials and Methods: A total of 72 single-rooted human mandibular incisors were instrumented with NiTi rotary files with irrigation of 2.5% NaOCl. The smear layer was removed with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Specimens were assigned into four groups according to the obturation system: Group 1, EndoRez (Ultradent Product Inc.); Group 2, Activ GP (Brasseler); Group 3, SmartSeal (DFRP Ltd. Villa Farm); Group 4, AH 26 (Dentsply de Trey)/gutta-percha (GP). For push-out bond strength measurement, two horizontal slices were obtained from each specimen (n = 20). To compare dentinal tubule penetration, remaining 32 roots assigned to 4 groups as above were obturated with 0.1% Rhodamine B labeled sealers. One horizontal slice was obtained from the middle third of each specimen (n = 8) and scanned under confocal laser scanning electron microscope. Tubule penetration area, depth, and percentage were measured. Kruskall-Wallis test was used for statistical analysis. Results: EndoRez showed significantly lower push-out bond strength than the others (p < 0.05). No significant difference was found amongst the groups in terms of percentage of sealer penetration. SmartSeal showed the least penetration than the others (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The bond strength and sealer penetration of resin-and glass ionomer-based sealers used with coated core was not superior to resin-based sealer used with conventional GP. Dentinal tubule penetration has limited effect on bond strength. The use of conventional GP with sealer seems to be sufficient in terms of push-out bond strength.
In this study, a series of three-dimensional numerical analyses were carried out to investigate the penetration performance of a dynamically installed Hall anchor. The advanced coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) technique was adopted to accurately simulate the large soil deformation during the vertical penetration of a Hall anchor. In total, 52 numerical analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between anchor penetration depth and the initial kinematic energy. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis was performed to investigate the effects of soil shear strength and soil type on the penetration mechanism of a drop anchor under self-weight. There is a monotonic increase in the penetration depth with an increasing anchor weight when the topsoil of the riverbed is not subjected to erosion. On the other hand, all the computed depths significantly increase when soil erosion is taken into consideration. This is mainly due to an enhanced initial kinematic energy from an increased dropping depth. Both depths increase exponentially with the initial kinematic energy. An enhanced shear strength can potentially increase the side resistance and end-bearing pressure around a drop anchor, thus significantly reducing the downward penetration of a hall anchor. Design charts are developed to directly estimate penetration depth and associated plastic zone due to dynamically installed anchor at arbitrary soil shear strength and anchor kinematic energy.
The internal erosion due to poor compaction of the material was the main cause of collapse of the embankment in Korea. The assessment of the compaction state of the dam body was a very important check in the safety diagnosis of the embankment. In this study, the correlation between dynamic cone penetration test and plate loading test which is the most typical compaction evaluation technique was analyzed to verify the applicability of the dynamic cone penetration test in evaluating the compaction state of the dam body. The standard penetration tests were carried out six times to define soil properties and depth of the test site. The spatial distributions were obtained by the Kriging method after 15 times of plate loading tests and 47 times of dynamic cone penetration tests. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the spatial distribution of the plate loading test and the dynamic cone penetration test spatial distribution at the constant penetration depth was calculated. The load distribution in the plate loading test and the blow counts at penetration depths of 5 cm, 10 cm and 15 cm in the dynamic cone penetration test showed a weak positive correlation.

The purpose of this study was to analyze how the fiber properties and mixing ratio of softwood and hardwood pulp affect on roundness of printed image. Softwood pulp and hardwood pulp were refined to 400 and 600ml CSF by Valley beater and handsheets of 70 g/$m^2$ basis weight were made at different mixing ratios of hardwood and softwood pulp. The roundness, dot area, and shape of the printed dot were measured by Image Analyzer. The depths and shapes of the acridine orange penetration into paper were measured by CLSM. With higher mixing ratio of hardwood pulp, the paper showed higher air-permeability and better formation, especially at lower freeness. The roundness of the printed image became better and the dot size became smaller when the amount of hardwood pulp increased. Penetration depth of acridine orange by CLSM became greater and roundness increased to real circle when the amount of hardwood pulp increased. It was thought that higher mixing ratio of hardwood fibers resulted in efficient penetration by better formation with uniform micro-pore distribution and it increased roundness. It was thought that fiber properties and mixing ratio affected the structure of paper and the shape of the printed dot. This study showed that the measurement of depth of the liquid penetration into paper without destruction and contact was feasible. Moreover, this method showed that the shape of the liquid penetration was measurable.

Explosion after penetration of a warhead in an underground structure generally causes considerable displacement, breakage and extensive damage to the target. Therefore, in order to reduce the damage effect, it is required to design an underground structure protection against penetration. In this study, major factors for improvement of penetration protection performance of reinforced concrete underground structures using applied element method are divided into strength (concrete UCS) and density (concrete thickness, reinforcement layers, reinforcement diameters, reinforcement spacings). Based on these major factors, this study performed numerical analysis of simulation of dynamic response by penetrators under various conditions and analyzed the results. The results of this study are expected to be used as basis materials to improve penetration protection performance of reinforced concrete underground structures.

Recently, the demand for high penetration of variable renewable energy (VRE) penetration in a power system is increased. In consequence, distribution systems including microgrids confront the increased installation of VRE-based distributed generation. Despite of the high demand of VRE-based distributed generation in a distribution system, the installation of photovoltaic (PV) system in a distribution system has been restricted by various problems. In other words, the hosting capacity for high VRE penetration in a distribution system is limited. This paper analyzes the improvements of hosting capacity VRE penetration of stand-alone microgrid (SAMG) with energy storage system (ESS) by considering virtual-slack (VS) control based on power sensitivity. With the pre-defined power sensitivity, the ESS operates as virtual slack in the SAMG by controlling its bus voltage and phase angle indirectly. Therefore, the ESS enables the increase of VRE penetration in the SAMG. The proposed VS control is realized by analyzing the ESS as a virtual slack in power flow analysis based on power sensitivity. Then its validity is demonstrated with the case study on the SAMG in South Korea with practical data.

The purpose of this paper is to verify the structural integrity of a region with numerous penetration-holes in offshore structures such as semi-submersible rig and FPSO. In order to effectively check the yielding and buckling strength of plate members with penetration-holes, a screening analysis program was developed with the FE analysis tool to generate fine meshed model using the theoretical and analysis methods. When a hole is appeared in the plate structure members, the flow of stress is altered such that concentrations of stress form near the hole. Stress concentrations are of concern during both preliminary and detail design and need to be addressed from the perspectives of strength. To configure the geometrical shape, very fine meshed FE analysis is needed as the most accurate method. However, this method is practically impossible to apply for the strength verifications for all perforated plates. In this paper, screening analysis method was introduced to reduce analysis tasks prior to detailed FE analysis. This method is applied to not only the peak stress calculation combined stress concentration factor with nominal stress but also nominal equivalent stress calculation considering cutout effects. The areas investigated by very fine meshed analysis were to be chosen through screening analysis without any reinforcements for penetration-holes. If screening analysis results did not satisfy the acceptance criteria, direct FE analysis method as the 2nd step approach were applied with one of the coarse meshed model considering hole or with the very fine meshed model considering the hole shape and size. In order to effectively perform the local fine meshed analysis, automatic model generating program was developed based on the MSC/PATRAN which is pre-post FE analysis program. Buckling strength was also evaluated by Common Structure Rule (CSR) adopted by IACS as the stress obtained from very fine meshed FE analysis. Due to development of the screening analysis program and automatic FE modeling program, it was able to reduce the design periods and structural analysis costs.

Analysis of chloride penetration into concrete is performed considering the repeated wetting and drying conditions of tidal zone, by means of the developed finite element program which enables the diffusion-convection analysis to be conducted. Heat conduction and moisture diffusion are also included in the finite element analysis program in order that their effects to chloride penetration may be considered. For the efficiency of calculation, the analyses of temperature, relative humidity and free chloride concentration are conducted successively in that order, by treating the convection of chloride due to moisture diffusion as an source or sink term. By comparing the analysis result from finite element analysis, where main variable is a wetting and drying period, with the chloride profiles from ACI Life-365 method, it is shown that the Life-365 method gives an accurate result for the submerged zone but does not consider the differences of wetting and drying period. To obtain an accurate chloride profile in the tidal zone, it is confirmed that the diffusion-convection finite element analysis should be applied.
In order to protect lives and prevent large-scale injuries in the event of a fire on a ship or an offshore plant, most classification societies are strengthening their fire resistance designs of relevant cargo holds and accommodation compartments to keep flames from being transferred from a fire point to other compartments. Particularly in critical compartments, where flames should not propagate for a certain period of time, such as the A60 class division, both the airtightness and fire-resistant design of a piece passing through a bulkhead are subject to the Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In order to verify the suitability of a fire-resistant design for such a penetrating piece, the fire test procedure prescribed by the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) must be carried out. However, a numerical simulation should first be conducted to minimize the time and cost of the fire resistance test. In this study, transient thermal analyses based on the finite element method were applied to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of a bulkhead penetration piece for the A60 class compartment. In order to determine a rational bulkhead penetration piece design, the transient heat transfer characteristics according to the variation of design parameters such as the diameter, length, and material were reviewed. The verification of the design specification based on a numerical analysis of the transient heat transfer performed in this study will be discussed in the following research paper for the actual fire protection test of the A60 class bulkhead penetration piece.
