  • The present study aims to design an optimized hull shape of a floating pendulum-type wave energy converter(WEC). The purpose of these structure is to improve the performance and stability of the WEC by reducing its motion under operating and survival wave conditions. In this study, motion reduction structures, like restoring and dampling plates were installed on a floating pendulum WEC that has been the subject of previous studies. Restoring plates were installed to increase the restoring force and shift the natural period to a shorter period. Damping plates were installed to shift the natural period to a longer period by increasing the added mass. The effects of the structures were then analyzed under different incident wave conditions. The design parameters for the motion reduction structures were size, shape, and installed position. The wave-induced motion characteristics and performance of the floating pendulum WEC were also investigated numerically. Based on the simulation results, we are able to optimize the motion reduction structure of the WEC, thus improving its efficiency and durability.

  • This paper summarizes a study on the application of the friction pendulum system in bridge seismic isolation. Shaking table tests have been carried out on a model structure isolated with F.P.S and the obtained structural responses are compared to those of non-isolated. It can be concluded the F.P.S increases the earthquake resistance capacity of the isolated structure. It is also found that the stiffness of bearing, being controlled by the radius of curvature of the spherical sliding interface, is unaffected by the amplitude of the input excitation. Furthermore, the coefficient of sliding friction is velocity dependent so that in weak excitation the sliding velocity is low and, accordingly, the mobilized friction force is less than the one mobilized in strong excitation. Also, the frictional properties of the bearings remain markedly stable after extensive testing, and the permanent displacements are small and not cumulative in successive earthquakes.

  • In this study, Among the electromagnetic induction power generation (EMG) techniques, the design specifications of the RFPM were set, and a suitable test prototype was manufactured through finite element analysis (FEM, 2D) required for characteristic calculation. In addition, a dedicated testing device (Dynamo-Tester) was designed and manufactured to measure and analyze the test prototype. The test product was measured with a test device and the result is analyzed to suggest a method that can be applied by generating as much output power as possible to charge the battery of the wearable IT device using actual kinetic energy of the human body. As a result of the test, the output power was 1.679W and the efficiency was 79.31% under the conditions of rotation speed of 780.9rpm, torque of 0.264kgf/cm, and load current of 73.6~73.9mA. Therefore, it was analyzed that it was possible to charge the wearable device with the output of the ultra-small RFPM pendulum generator.

  • A new concept of a small thruster for altitude control of a micro/nano class satellite is developed, which utilizes the pulsed laser energy. As the laser-based thruster does not require burning of any fuel, it gives promise of small satellite design criteria, namely light weight and cost effectiveness. In this paper, we develop gel-type material for generating strong plasma plume for enhancing thrust for propulsion. Moreover, we quantify the level of thrust via the momentum coupling coefficient measured by the pendulum system. We discover that the driving force is significantly improved via the gel-typed propellant for laser ablation.

  • Breakaway support for small signs of size $0.293\;m^2{\sim}0.360\;m^2$ using indented tube type bolt of D12 mm with 6 mm inner diameter has been developed and the structural strength of the support system for the wind load was verified through static shear and tension tests. One important value in understanding the dynamic behavior of sign post and impact vehicle is the fracture energy of the sign support. In this study, fracture energy needed to break the sign support was estimated by pendulum test and computer simulation using LS-DYNA program. Support system composed of 3 indented bolts was found to sustain the 43.1 kg$\sim$51.2 kg wind load safely. Fracture energy for one indented bolt was measured as 163.3J from the pendulum test, and was calculated as 153J from the LS-DYNA simulation. The closeness between these two values verified the validity of the simulation model.

  • An experimental study was performed to evaluate seismic reduction performance and the applicability of 2-dimensional floor isolation system to the main control room of a nuclear power plant. A lead-rubber bearing (LRB) and a friction pendulum system (FPS) were designed and fabricated for a 2-dimensional floor isolation system. A partial experimental model of a main control room with the LRB and FPS was tested using a shaking table. The experimental model consisted of a control panel, a 2.5m${\times}$2.5m access floor, and four LRB and FPS. The artificial time histories based on the horizontal floor response spectrums (OBE, SSE) of the main control room were used as earthquake input signals. Compared to the non-isolated system, the seismic response of experimental models using a 2-dimensional floor isolation system showed considerable seismic reduction performance against an earthquake.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental studies on the equipment isolation effect considering the floor response. For this purpose, shaking table tests were performed. For the measuring the floor response, numerical analysis was performed. For the isolation for the equipment, Natural Rubber Bearing(NRB), High Damping Rubber Bearing(HDRB) and Friction Pendulum System(FPS) were used. Finally, it is presented that the isolation systems used in this test can be adopted for the small equipment isolation. But the rubber bearing used in this study affected to the temperature change very sensitively.

  • Chemical application is one of the most important field operation in rice production. Rolling of a boom due to local unevenness and softness in fields causes a local under/over-application of spray. In this study, the vertical movement of boom tips due to unevenness of ground in paddy fields was investigated, and an active pendulum suspension control system was designed and tested for compensating the movement and balancing the boom to the ground. The results for testing the performance of the control system showed that the system could balance the boom both in flat and inclined fields. The active pendulum control system developed in this study could be properly used for improving spraying performance of a boom sprayer.

  • The friction pendulum system(FPS) is a kind of seismic isolation devices for isolating structures from an earthquake. To analyze the effect of friction materials used in the friction pendulum system, fragility analysis of LNG tank with seismic isolation system was conducted. In this study, titanium dioxide($TiO_2$) nanoparticles were incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF) matrix to produce friction materials attached to the FPS. The base moment of the concrete outer tank and the acceleration of the structure were evaluated from different mixing ratios of constituents for the friction materials. The seismic fragility curves were developed based on two types of limit state. It is confirmed that evaluation of combined fragility curves with several limit states can be applied to select the optimum friction material satisfying the required performance of the FPS for various infrastructure.
