Seed pelleting have successfully been used in many crops for better crop estab-lishment and for mechanizing seeding process for small crop seeds in developed countries. In this experiment various pelleting materials and binders were tested to get basic information on the shape, hardness and germination of pelleted seesds of cabbage (cv. Seoul Beachoo) and rice (cv: Ilpoom). PLL-11, paper clay, lime and coal ash were good materials to make smooth shape of the pellets with pel gel and AG-11 as binders, and PLL-ll as material and pelgel and AG-11 as binders were the best among them in consideration of shape and hardness together. The hardness of the pelleted seeds were differed with each other depending on both of the pelleting materials and binders. Pelleted cabbage seeds coated by pelgel as binder with different materials showed lower germination percentge than control in general, but the seeds pelleted by PLL-11 with different binders showed no restraint effects. When the cabbage seed pelleted by PLL-11 with pelgel as binder showed almost same germination percentage as control. The pH and electrical conductivity of the extract from bentonite and zeolite were very higher than other materials tested and germination percentage showed a little lower than control when the cab-bage seed planted on the filter paper damped with the extract. As a result, PLL-11 as pelleting material and pel gel and AG-11 as binder appeared the good materials to make pellets of cabbage seeds and rice in consideration of shape, hardness and germination.
This study was conducted to select Codonopsis lanceolata seed's new pelleting particulate materials and adhesives. Different adhesives (Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), Xanthan gum (XG), Arabic gum (AG)) and particulate materials (Illite, Diatomite, Pyrophyllite + Illite + Diatomite (PID), Pyrophyllite + Illite + Talc (PIT), Bentonite + Talc (BT)) were tested for seed pelleting. PID for Codonopsis lanceolata seed pelleting appeared to be the best particulate material. Among the pelleting adhesives, PVP was the best adhesive for seed pelleting, and the optimum concentration for germination of pelleting seed was 1 %. Germination rate of the pelleted seeds treated with PID particulate material and PVP adhesive was higher (86.8%) than those of raw seeds (85.5%). $T_{50}$ and MDG of pelleted Codonopsis lanceolata seed required five and eight days at soil moisture content of 50%, respectively.
This experiment was conducted to evaluate the germination rate according to temperature, pelleting materials, pelleted size, seed storage periods under light and dark conditions in Rehmannia glutinosa. The highest germination rate was obtained from $25^{\circ}C$ in both light and dark condition. Two-year old seeds showed higher germination rate compared to one-year old seed. Talc material showed the highest germination rate among the pelleting materials by 82.5%. Among the different pelleting sizes, the highest germination rate was shown in 2.0 mm, and especially Talc pelleting showed 100% germination rate on 17days after seeding. In case of combination of pelleting materials, both of talc + vermiculite, zeolite + vermiculite showed lower germination rate than the control and 0.7 mm pelleted seed showed the highest germination rate.
To investigate the effects of seed treatments and liming on nodulation and growth of lucerne(Medicago sativa L.) in an upland yellow-brown earth in N.Z. the five levels of seed treatments(Uninoculated, Inoculated, Inoculated plus lime pelleted, Inoculated plus 50/50 phosphate/dolmite pelleted, Inoculated plus ta1c pelleted), and 2 levels of lime applications (0, 25kg/10a) were compared and their interactions were observed, and then the following results were obtained. 1. In oder to obtain the effective nodulation of lucerne on acid soil it is usually necessary to apply lime and inoculate the seed. 2. The coating of inoculated lucerne seed with adequate materials will promote the nodulation. 3. The pelleting of lucerne seed may be a of reducing the need for the heavy liming. 4. The finely grounded lime was the best to use origin upland yellow-brown earth. 5. When the seed were not inoculated or pelleted with inferior material, liming is very effective for the nodulation and growth of lucerne. 6. The pelleting seed will reduce the laborious work and expenditure.
Eight crop residues : 1, sorghum (Sorqhum bicolor) straw, 2, maize (Zea mays) straw, 3, cotton (Gossypium Sp.) straw, 4, sunflower (Helianthus Sp.) straw, 5, cotton (Gossypium Sp.) seed hulls, 6, groundnut (Archais hypogaea) hulls, 7, maize (Zea mays) cobs, 8, sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) bagasse and two forest grasses 9, Heteropogan contortus dry grass and 10, Sehima nervosum dry grass were subjected to three physical processing 1, chopping (2-3 cm) 2, grinding (8 mm sieve) and 3, pelleting (10 mm die holes). The processed material was fed ad lib. Along with 250 g of concentrate mixture per head per day to 6 adult local goats and 16 adult Nellore rams in ten digestion experiments and finally assessed the nutritive value of the processed roughages by difference method. Grinding increased bulk density by 32.4 (cotton seed hulls, CSH) to 88.1% (Sehima dry grass) while pelleting of ground material increased bulk density by 53.9 (maize cobs) to 235.8% (maize straw). The average particle size ranged from $584.1/^U$ (sorghum straw) to $1467/^U$ (CSH). Modulus of uniformity ranged from 2:5:3 (sorghum straw) to 7:2:1 (CSH) while modulus of fineness ranged from 3.4 (sorghum straw) to 5.4 (CSH). Molasses absorbability was highest with cotton seed hulls and least with maize cobs. Pelleting increased DM intake of the residues except cotton seed hulls compared to grinding. Grinding of chopped material/unprocessed material increased DM intake on sorghum straw and cotton seed hulls. Sheep consumed more DM compared to goats on all the residues except sorghum and sunflower straws. Pelleting increased nutritive value of all the residues compared to grinding and chopping. However, no difference was observed in the nutritive value due to grinding and chopping. Goats performed better compared to sheep in utilizing the fibrous residues.
A seed pelleting technique was developed for easy handling of small tobacco seeds (variety, NC82) and for direct seeding in temperary planting bed or in field. The mixture of pelleting material, binder and seeds were moulded in cylindrical holes sized 2 mm diameter and 2 mm height in a plastic plate. Bentonite and cellulose powder were good materials to make pellets with CMC as binder, and bentonite formed the hardest pelleted seeds among the materials. The number of the pelleted seeds made with the same weight of the materials was different with materials used and the number of seeds contained in a pelleted seed could be controlled by mixture ratio of materials and seeds. The seedless pellets ranged 6.9 to 16.0% at the ratio of pelleting material and seed for 2~3 seeds in a pellet. The moisture absorption rate at 100% RH and $25^{\circ}C$ was greater in the order of clay < bentonite < cellulose. Germination rates of pelleted seeds with bentonite and cellulose were similar to that of usual seed, but it was significantly lower with clay pelleted seeds.
Direct seeding of rice-seed pellets is expected to be an alternative for solving problems in current direct seeding cultivation of rice. but mass production of rice-seed pellets is prerequisite for practical application. Design. construction and performance evaluation of an experimental rice seed pelleting machine were carried out for mass production of rice-seed pellets. The pelleting machine intended to make a ball type rice-seed pellet, which have 3∼5 rice seeds and diameter of which is 12 mm. Pellet materials ; rice seeds, soil, and binder were mixed and kneaded by the mixer. The designed rice seed pelleting machine fed pellet materials by screw conveyor to forming rolls and made rice-seed pellets. Capacity, ratio of perfect rice-seed pellets, seed and pellet material loss were investigated as mixing ratio of soil to rice seed and feeding rate of pellet materials. The pelleting machine showed up to 37,000 pellets/h of pelleting rate, 61∼71% of weight ratio of perfect rice-seed pellets to pellet materials supplied, 17∼48% of seed loss ratio. Average weight and average diameter of the pellets were 1.66 g and 12.0 mm. respectively. More than 3 rice seeds were included in most pellets at 6 : 1 of mixing ratio of soil to rice seed. And compression strength of the pellets was in the range of 88-130 N. To improve performance of the pelleting machine, improvements of the forming rolls, feeding mechanism, and discharging mechanism for reducing loss of pellet materials and seeds damage are needed.

Background: Sowing seeds of Adenophora triphylla is known to be difficult owing to their small size and irregular seed shape. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop a seed pelleting technique to save labor during sowing. Methods and Results: To identify the optimal germination temperature for A. triphylla seeds, the temperature range was set from 17℃ to 32℃. Germination surveys were conducted in plastic greenhouse conditions in March, April, and May to determine the appropriate sowing time. The optimal germination temperature for A. triphylla seeds was 29℃ and May was the optimal sowing time in plastic greenhouse conditions. Covering materials for seed pelleting used talc (T), kaolin (K), calcium carbonate (C), and vermiculite (V). The pellet binder used agar (A), pectin, xanthan gum, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and sodium alginate (S). The best suited treatment mixture were the best suited in kaolin / calcium carbonate / vermiculite (KCV), talc / calcium carbonate / vermiculite (TCV) mixture treatment for covering material, and sodium alginate (S), agar (A) as pellet binder, respectively. The germination rate was the best in TCV mixed with S. Conclusion: The mixture of TCV (2 : 1 : 3) + 1.5% S (TCVS), was found to be the best pelleting materials for A. triphylla seeds, and seed pelleting can be labor-saving during sowing.
This study was carried out to select new pelleting binder and material for Welsh onion seeds. The optimum treatments of the various plant growth regulators to improve seed germination of the Welsh onion was also estimated. There were no significant effects of growth regulators on the germination percentage, but germination was faster according to the number of days to 50% of the final germination ($T_{50}$) and the mean number of days to germination (MDG) than those of the control. Germinability was increased when the seeds were soaked in gibberellic acid ($GA_3$) solution for 24hrs, even though there was no synergy effect on the germinability when $GA_3$ was mixed with 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP). The optimum treatment for improving germination of Welsh onion was observed when the tested seeds was soaked in 500 $\mu$M of $GA_3$ at $20^{\circ}C$ for 24hrs. Also, when the seeds soaked in the aforementioned treatment, the rate of germination was increased at lower temperature than at $20^{\circ}C$, the optimal temperature. The percentage and the speed of seed germination depended on the kinds of pelleting binder and their concentration. It showed that the higher the concentration of the binder for seeds pelleting, the lower the percentage of seed germination. Among the pelleting binder, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were the best binders for seed pelleting, because seed germination using those binder did not affect on the concentration of binder. On the other hand, Carboxymethy cellulose (CMC) and methyl cellulose (MC) severely inhibited the seed germination The germinability was also different arcording to the pelleting materials. Among the different 58 pelleting materials, kaoline alone, the mixture of bentonite and kaoline, the mixture of bentonite, calcium carbonate and diatomaceous earth #300 were found as the best pelleting materials for welsh onion seeds.
