  • Red mud is generated as a by-product in the production of $Al(OH)_{3}/Al_2O_3$ from bauxite ore. In this study the pellet-type adsorbents have been made from the red mud, and their adsorption capacities of heavy metal ions have been tested. The pellet-type adsorbents were synthesized to utilize the excellent adsorption capacity of the powder-type adsorbent for industrial application. The pellet-type adsorbents were prepared by mixing several kinds of additives with the red mud. It is found that the pellet-type adsorbent, made by sintering a mixture of red mud (96.0 wt%), polypropylene (2.5%), fly ash (0.5 w%), and sodium metasilicate(1.0 wt%) at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes, has the highest adsorption capacity. in this work, the two kinds of pellet-type adsorbents (bead-type, crushed-type) were prepared. The crushed-type adsorbent was found to show a better adsorption/desorption performance than the bead-type adsorbent. The crushed-type adsorbent showed a good adsorption capacity of $Pb^{2+}$ like the powder-type adsorbent.

  • In this study, a pellet-type adsorbent was prepared by using the water-treatment sludge as a raw material, and its physical and chemical properties were analyzed through $N_2$-adsorption, XRD, XRF, and $NH_3$-TPD measurements. Adsorption performance for gaseous ammonia and formaldehyde was compared between the pellet-type adsorbents prepared from water-treatment sludge and the impregnated activated carbon. Although the surface area and pore volume of the pellet-type adsorbent produced from water-treatment sludge were much smaller than those of the impregnated activated carbon, the pellet-type adsorbent produced from water-treatment sludge could adsorb ammonia gas even more than that of using the impregnated activated carbon. The pellet-type adsorbent prepared from water-treatment sludge showed a superior adsorption capacity for ammonia which can be explained by chemical adsorption ascribed to the higher amount of acid sites on the pellet-type adsorbent prepared from water-treatment sludge. In the case of formaldehyde adsorption, the impregnated activated carbon was far superior to the adsorbent made from the water-treatment sludge, which can be attributed to the increased surface area of the impregnated activated carbon.

  • The adsorption characteristics of the pellet-type adsorbent prepared from water treatment sludge for trimethylamine and ammonia were studied. The surface area and pore volume of the pellet-type adsorbent increased during calcination at $500^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that the adsorbent prepared from water treatment sludge contained Br$\ddot{o}$nsted and Lewis acid sites. The breakthrough time of the adsorbent for both trimethylamine and ammonia was measured at different adsorbent weights and linear velocities while maintaining constant amounts of trimethylamine and ammonia. The kinetic saturation capacity and the adsorption rate constant for trimethylamine and ammonia were determined at different linear velocities by using the Wheeler equation. It was found that the kinetic saturation capacity and the adsorption rate constant were dependent on the linear velocity. An experimental equation could be derived to predict the breakthrough time of the adsorbent prepared from water treatment sludge for trimethylamine and ammonia at different adsorption conditions.

  • The two kinds of pellet-type red-mud adsorbents (bead-type, crushed-type) were from red mud, which is generated as a by-product during the production of aluminum hydroxide from bauxite ore. The adsorption experiments of Pb^{2+} ion in the aqueous solution by these red-mud adsorbents were studied with a continuous adsorption ccolumn. As a result, the crushed-type adsorbent shows better performance in adsorption of Pb^{2+} than the bead-type adsorbent between the two types of the pellet-type adsorbents. The continusous adsorption experiment shows that the pellet-type adsorbents made from red mud have good performance for removal of Pd^{2+}. The breakthrough curves of the red-mud adsorbents were compared with that of activated carbon.

  • The objective of this study is optimization of extrusion process for preparation of pellet-type adsorbents employed with alum sludge. Effects of water content and methyl cellulose as a binder on the possibility of extrusion and physical properties of pellet-type adsorbents were investigated. The physical characteristics of the pellet-type adsorbents were studied using nitrogen adsorption and compression strength. With a ratio of water to sludge, 63/100, the adsorbent was well extruded with a cylindrical form and the compressive strength was the highest. With increasing methyl cellulose content, the compressive strength of pellet-type adsorbent could be improved, but the specific surface area decreased. The breakthrough time of the hydrogen sulfide could be increased significantly through calcination and the breakthrough capacity reached to 1,700 mg/g, which seems to be due to increase of surface area during calcination.

  • In this study, the pellet-type adsorbents were prepared by extrusion using water treatment sludge. Effects of binder and calcination on physical and chemical properties of pellet-type adsorbents were investigated. The porous structure and surface characteristics of the adsorbents were studied using nitrogen adsorption, compression strength, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine. With increasing of binder content to 5 wt%, the compressive strength of pellet-type adsorbent could be improved more than three times, but the surface area reduced by 30%, and thus the breakthrough time of trimethylamine was shortened. The breakthrough time of the trimethylamine, a basic gas, could be increased more than three times through calcination, which seems to be due to generation of acid sites composed of Lewis acid and Br$\ddot{o}$nsted acid sites on the adsorbent surface.

  • Hydrogen sulfide and ammonia are one of the common malodorous compounds that can be found in emissions from many sewages treatment plants and industrial plants. Therefore, removing these harmful gases from emissions is of significance in both life and industry because they can cause health problems to human and detrimental effects on the catalysts. In this work, pyrolytic carbon blacks from waste tires were used to develop adsorbent with good adsorption capacity for removal of hydrogen and ammonia. Pellet-type adsorbents were prepared by a mixture of carbon black, metal oxide and sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid, and their adsorption capacities were estimated by using breakthrough curve of a continuous fixed bed adsorption column at ambient condition. The adsorbent manufactured with a mixture of carbon black, iron oxide(III) and sodium hydroxide showed the maximum working capacity of hydrogen sulfide. For ammonia, maximum working capacity was obtained by the adsorbent manufactured with a mixture of carbon black, copper oxide(II) and hydrochloric acid.

  • In this study, $CO_2$ adsorbent was developed for removing low concentration of $CO_2$ in multiple-use facilities. The efficiency of the adsorbent which was improved selective $CO_2$ adsorption capabilities was evaluated. The pellet type adsorbent was modified from a commercial zeolite with mixing LiOH, binder, additives, and $H_2O$. Column tests showed over 90 % of $CO_2$ was adsorbed within 400min. Chamber tests including batch and continuous types were performed for evaluating the adsorbent module. By batch tests, it was evaluated that about 92% of $CO_2$ was removed within 30 min. By continuous tests, 70% of $CO_2$ was removed within 30 min. It was analyzed that over 2,500 ppm of $CO_2$ was continuously removed as shown chamber tests. The reproducibility tests repeatedly performed for 15 days shows that over 1,000 ppm of $CO_2$ was continuously removed. Adsorption capacity of the developed adsorbent was 5.0mmol $CO_2/g$ adsorbent which was analyzed by TGA. It was estimated that the modified adsorbent was applicable to low $CO_2$ concentration and low temperature of indoor environment.

  • The goal of this paper was to improve the performance of the adsorbent to remove $H_2S$. Pellet type adsorbents were prepared by using four kinds of materials ($Fe_2O_3$, $Ca(OH)_2$, Activated carbon, $Al(OH)_2)$ for use as a basic carrier. As the results of $H_2S$ adsorption tests, $Fe_2O_3$ and Activated Carbon improved the adsorption performance of $H_2S$ by 1.5 ~ 2 times, and $Ca(OH)_2$ and $Al(OH)_2$ showed no effect on $H_2S$ adsorption performance. Four basic materials were as carriers, and 5 wt% of KI, KOH and $K_2CO_3$ were added on the carriers, respectively. As the results of $H_2S$ adsorption tests, adsorbent containing $K_2CO_3$ showed the best performance. As a result of $H_2S$ adsorption test with varying $K_2CO_3$ content from 5 to 30 wt%, it was confirmed that adsorption performance was increased up to 20 wt% of $K_2CO_3$ and adsorption performance decreased to 30 wt%. The $H_2S$ adsorption performance was modeled by using Thomas model with varying $K_2CO_3$ contents and the results were used for the adsorption tower design. It was shown that the experimental values and the simulated values were in good agreement with the contents range of $K_2CO_3$ up to 20 wt%. Based on these results, it is expected that not only the adsorption performance of $H_2S$ adsorbent is improved but also life time of the adsorbent is increased.
