Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of age and diet forms on growth-development patterns, serum metabolism indicators, and parameters of body fat deposition in Cherry Valley ducks. Methods: According to the hatching age and initial weight, a total of 150 1-day-old male SM3 Cherry Valley ducks were randomly assigned to two diet forms (pellet vs powder form). Each treatment had with 5 replicates per treatment and 15 meat ducks per replicate. The study lasted 42 d, which was divided into two periods (1 to 21 vs 22 to 42 d). Results: Our results showed that compared with powder group, ducks in pellet group had greater growth performance during different period (p<0.05). The inflection point was 24 d and was not numerically affected by diet forms. Increasing age (42 vs 21 d) significantly increased the weight of body fat and hepatic fat metabolism related enzyme activities in ducks (p<0.05), meanwhile, increasing age (42 vs 21 d) improved serum metabolism indicators and decreased mRNA expression levels of fat metabolism-related genes in liver (p<0.05). Ducks fed different diets (pellet vs powder form) increased growth performance as well as the weight of body fat and improved serum metabolism indicators (p<0.05). In addition, interactions were found between age and diet forms on the levels of serum metabolism indicators in ducks (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, powder feed reduced growth performance of ducks, and the day of inflection point was 24 days old. Ducks with higher age or fed with pellet diet showed higher fat deposition. The effect of age and feed forms on body fat deposition might result from changes in the contents of serum metabolism indicators, key enzyme activity of lipid production, and hepatic gene expressions.
A strain producing high levels of compaction was isolated from soil and identified as Penicillium sp. Y-8515 based on the morphological characteristics and ribosomal RNA sequence analysis. Optimization of several different carbon and nitrogen sources for the effective production of compaction was performed resulting in the medium compositions containing 5%(w/v) glucose, 1.0 % soybean meal, 0.5% yeast extract, 0.5%(NH$_4$)$_2$$SO_4$, 0.25%,$ NaH_2$$PO_4$, 0.25% $CaCO_3$. The fixed con-centration of glucose(5%, w/v) and relatively lower concentrations(less than 2.5%, w/v) of soybean meal stimu-lated the transformation of the growth morphology from filamentous to pellet form. Comparing to that by filamentous form, the production of compactin by pellet form increased up to 1.5 folds. In a fed-batch fermentation, continuous feeding of the mixture of glucose and nitrogen source at the ratio of 10:1 showed 3.5-fold more produc-tion yield of compaction comparing to the batch mode.
Recently environment-friendly pellet boilers have interests as emissions of greenhouse gases are regulated internationally and energy security becomes more important to oil addicted countries including Republic of Korea. But the Korean market for pellet boilers is on the initial stage due to the high production costs relative to other conventional boilers. Hence the Korean government has supported financially and promoted the pellet boiler business. In this sense, it would contribute market stratergy and effective promotion policy for both of the government and private companies if we can forecast market shares of pellet boilers appropriately. For this purpose, this study surveyed potential consumers' preferences on pellet boilers among various alternatives using a choice experiment reflecting intangible costs. As the market share of new technology increases, intangible costs decline. According to different intangible cost scenarios, we experimented people's preferences on oil, gas, electric, and pellet boilers. A multinomial logit model was employed to estimate coefficient parameters of common attributes for various alternative boilers. Based on the estimates, we forecasted market shares of individual boilers. We found that as intangible costs decline, the market share of pellet boiler increase substantically while market shares of electric and gas boilers decrease dramatically. The market share of oil boiler did not change significantly. Meanwhile, as people are more rich, more educated, and exposed to advertisement on pellet boilers, the likelihood of choosing the pellet boiler increases.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of replacing dried mugwort (Artemisia montana Pampan) in concentrate a time of preparation pellet. The treatments, arranged in a 4${\times}$4 Latin square design, were four additional levels of mugwort at 0, 3, 5 and 10% in concentrate. Four crossbred (CorriedalexPolwarth, t) sheep with a mean body weight of 41.3 kg were used to evaluate nutrients digestibility, palatability, fermentation characteristics and microbial protein synthesis in the rumen. The digestibility of crude protein was improved (p < 0.05) to 6.1 % - 8.6 % in sheep fed 3, 5 and 10% mugwort pellet treatments compared with that of control. That of crude fat and NDF was improved (p < 0.05) to 5.8 % - 7.3 % in sheep fed 3 % compared to other treatments. The ruminal pH was significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in sheep fed 3 % mugwort pellet compared to other treatments when observed at 0.5 hour after feeding. The ammonia nitrogen concentrations were the highest in sheep fed all treatments at 1 hour after feeding. The ruminal concentrations of acetic acid and propionic acids were an improvement (p < 0.05) at the 3% and 5% treatments. Retained nitrogen of 3, 5 and 10% treatment with the value of 2.24 - 2.82 g was higher (p < 0.05) than that of the control with 0.78 g and microbial protein production of 10% treatment was higher (p < 0.05) than that of control. This study suggested that the replacing with 3% dry mugwort (Artemisia montana Pampan) in concentrate a time of preparation pellet will improve nutrient digestibility, palatability, ruminal fermentation characteristics and feed value.

Forty three 7-month old, Barbados Black $Belly{\times}Malin$ crossbred sheep were used for the trial. They were allotted into three treatment groups fed varying levels of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) frond pellets and commercial sheep pellets. Treatment diets were 80% commercial pellet+20 % (% w/w) oil palm frond pellet (CON group, n=15), 50% commercial pellet+50% oil palm frond pellet (% w/w) (HAF group, n=14) and 80% oil palm frond pellet+20% (% w/w) commercial pellet (OPF group, n=14). The plasma fatty acid profiles from these animals were compared before and after 14 weeks of feeding. Results showed that total unsaturated fatty acid content in the CON group had increased by 10% (p<0.01) from the pre-treatment values. All three treatment groups had significantly different plasma n-6 and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid contents at the end of the trial. In fact, the CON group had significantly (p<0.01) more n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid content compared to its own initial values, and also the values from the HAF and OPF groups. However there was a significant (p<0.01) decline in plasma n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in all groups. The final total unsaturated to saturated fatty acid content ratio was significantly (p<0.01) highest in the CON group, demonstrating the high plasma unsaturated fatty acid content in these animals. This study shows the plasma unsaturated fatty acids in sheep can be increased by dietary manipulation.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of commercial extruded pellet (EP) diet on the growth and water quality compared with a raw fish moist pellet (MP) diet for flounder on field feeding experiments. Three replicate groups of 130 fish per each tank (initial weight of 380 g) were fed one of the EP and Moist pellet (MP) for 7 months. In field feeding experiment, no significant difference was observed in final mean weight of fish fed the experimental EP (1,233 g) and MP (1,237 g), and any noticeable problem caused by feeding the experimental EP was not found during the whole period of feeding trial. Feed efficiency of fish fed the experimental EP was higher than that of MP, and there was no significant difference in survival between the fish fed experimental EP and MP. The concentrations of SS, COD, TN and TP of seawater in tanks of MP groups were 1-5 times higher than those of EP groups. Therefore, these results strongly suggest that diet EP could be developed to replace MP diet for the marketable size of production for flounder without adverse effects on growth performance and water quality.
This study evaluated the potential of coffee waste (CW) and used frying oil (UFO) as an additive in the production of pitch pine (PIP) and Mongolian oak (MOK) pellets. Ash contents obtained from CW and UFO were 0.5% and <0.1%, respectively. The calorific values of UFO (31.4 MJ/kg) and CW (26.3 MJ/kg) are higher than PIP (20.6 MJ/kg) and MOK (19.1 MJ/kg). For pellets fabricated using a pilot-scale flat-die pellet mill, regardless of fabricating conditions, moisture content (MC) and bulk density of PIP and MOK pellets satisfied the A1 wood pellet standard for residential and small-scale commercial uses, as designated by the National Institute of Forest Science (NIFOS) of the Republic of Korea. When CW was used as an additive, durability of PIP pellets made with 12%-MC sawdust and MOK pellets increased. The optimal conditions for producing PIP and MOK pellets could be by adding 20 mesh CW as an additive and the using of 12%-MC sawdust. However, durability of PIP pellets and ash content MOK pellets did not satisfy the A1 wood pellet standard of NIFOS. Thus, further research is needed to improve the properties of wood pellets with additives.

On board hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of an active metal is very attractive due to its economical, convenient, and safe reasons. A Mg-graphite pellet has been designed as a hydrogen source for portable fuel cell. Mg (1 g) + 0.10 g graphite pellet showed an excellent hydrogen generation rate that is equivalent to 15.8 ml/g.min from its hydrolysis. The hydrogen generation rate of the pellet is significantly increased due to the galvanic corrosion by galvanic cells between Mg anode and graphite cathode in a 10.wt. % NaCl solution at a room temperature.

The two kinds of pellet-type red-mud adsorbents (bead-type, crushed-type) were from red mud, which is generated as a by-product during the production of aluminum hydroxide from bauxite ore. The adsorption experiments of Pb^{2+} ion in the aqueous solution by these red-mud adsorbents were studied with a continuous adsorption ccolumn. As a result, the crushed-type adsorbent shows better performance in adsorption of Pb^{2+} than the bead-type adsorbent between the two types of the pellet-type adsorbents. The continusous adsorption experiment shows that the pellet-type adsorbents made from red mud have good performance for removal of Pd^{2+}. The breakthrough curves of the red-mud adsorbents were compared with that of activated carbon.
The purpose of this study was to raise some questions about the supply and demand statistics of fisheries products and to find implications for food supply and demand. There are three problems in the statistics of fisheries supply and demand. First, it is a structural problem of supply and demand statistics. Supply and demand statistics are not accurate because the feed, the amount of loss, and the waste rate are not surveyed. Second, the amount of fish used as a moist pellet is missing. Third, although some of the seaweed and kelp production is used as abalone feed, it is not classified as feed. Taking these results into consideration, at least 300,000 tons should be classified as feed for fisheries supply and demand statistics. As mentioned above, the current statistics on the supply and demand of fisheries are incomplete and structural improvement is needed.
