We use three sensors such as a vision sensor, a proximity sensor, and a force/torque sensor fused by fuzzy logic in a peg-in-hole task. The vision and proximity sensors are usually used for gross motion control and the information is used here to position the peg around the hole. The force/torque sensor is used for fine motion control and the information is used to insert the peg into the hole precisely. Throughout the task, the information of all the three sensors is fused by a fuzzy logic controller. Some simulation results are also presented for verification.
For successful deformable part assembly, information about its deformation as well as possible misalignment between the hole and its respective mating part are essential. Such information can be mainly acquired from visual sensors. In this paper, part deformation and misalignment in deformable cylindrical peg-in-hole tasks are measured by using a visual sensing system. First, a series of experiments to measure the position of an arbitrary point are performed. Next, an algorithm to measure misalignment and part shape as part deformation are presented, and a series of experiments on them are performed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms and the system are effective in measuring part deformation and misalignment.
Chamferless peg-in-hole process of the cylindrical type parts using force/torque sensor and vision sensor is analyzed and simulated in this paper. Peg-in-hole process is classified to the normal mode (only position error) and tilted mode(position and orientation error). The tilted mode is sub-classified to the small and the big tilted mode according to the relative orientation error. Since the big tilted node happened very rare, most papers dealt with only the normal or the small tilted mode. But the most errors of the peg-in-hole process happened in the big tilted mode. This problem is analyzed and simulated in this paper using the force/torque sensor and vision senor. In the normal mode, fuzzy logic is introduced to combine the data of the force/torque sensor and vision sensor. Also the whole processing algorithms and simulations are presented.
An electro-hydraulic manipulator using hydraulic actuators has many nonlinear elements, and its parameter fluctuations are greater than those of an electrically driven manipulator. So it is relatively difficult to obtain stable control performance. In this report, we applied disturbance estimation and compensation type robust control to all axes in a 3-link electro-hydraulic manipulator. From the results of experiment, it was confirmed that the performance of trajectory tracking and attitude regulating is greatly improved by the disturbance observer, which model is the same for each axis. On the other hand, for the autonomous assembly tasks, it is said that compliance control is one of the most available methods. Therefore we proposed compliance control which is based on the position control by disturbance observer for our manipulator system. To realize more stable contact work, the states in the compliance loop are feedback, where not only displacement but also velocity and acceleration are considered. And we applied this compliance control to Peg-in-Hole insertion task and analyzed mechanical relation between peg and hole. Also we proposed new method of shifting the position of end-effector periodically for the purpose of smooth insertion. As a result of using this method, it is experimentally confirmed that Peg-in-Hole insertion task with a clearance of 0.05[mm]can be achieved.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between hand dexterity and visual-motor skills of preschoolers. We searched for the correlation between two test results, which were the 9-Hole Peg Test performance time and the visual motor integration test(VMI) performance score. Then, we also compared the 9-Hole Peg Test performance times with the VMI performance scores according to sex and age. Method : The participants were fifty normal children ranging in age from four to six years living in Busan. We used two test methods which have high reliability and validity. One was the 9-Hole Peg Test to evaluate hand dexterity, and the other was the VMI to the evaluate visual-motor skills of these young children. Results : First, over the entire range of the participating children, there was a high correlation between the performance times from the 9-Hole Peg Test and the VMI performance scores(r=-.682). Second, there was not a statistically significant difference between the performance times from the 9-Hole Peg Test and the VMI scores according to sex. Third, there were significant differences between the hand dexterity and visual-motor skills according to the children's age(p<.001). Conclusion : This study proved that there is high correlation between hand dexterity and visual-motor skills of the preschooler. Occupational therapists in preschool service should consider that visual-motor skills need to be compatible with hand dexterity in both evaluation and therapy. In addition, hand dexterity and visual-motor skills improved according to advances in age, so we must give graded tasks to proper age groups through concrete analysis of activity. By doing this, children can get the better therapeutic effects.
A virtual reality system is implemented for the operator supervising a robot's operation at a remote site. For this implementation, a two D.O.F force-reflective joystick is designed to reflect the force/torque measured at the end of robotic manipulator and to generate the motion command for the robot by the operator using this joystick. In addition, the visual information that is captured by a CCD camera, is transmitted to the remote operator and is displayed on a CRT monitor. The operator who is holding the force reflective joystick and watching the CRT monitor can resolve unexpected problems that the robot confronts with. That is, the robot performs the tasks autonomously unless it confronts with unexpected events that can be resolved by only the operator. To demonstrate the feasibility of this system, a remote peg-in-hole operation is implemented and the experimental data are shown.
An electro-hydraulic manipulator using hydraulic actuators has many nonlinear elements, and its parameter fluctuations are greater than those of an electrically driven manipulator. So it is quite difficult to obtain stable control performance. We have applied a disturbance estimation and compensation type robust control to all the axes in a 6-link electro-hydraulic manipulator. It was confirmed that the performance of trajectory tracking and attitude regulating was greatly improved by the disturbance observer. For autonomous assembly tasks, it is said that compliance control is one of the most popular methods in contact task. We have proposed a compliance control based on the position control by a disturbance observer for our manipulator system. To realize more stable contact work, the states in the compliance loop are feedbacked, where not only displacement but also the velocity and acceleration are considered. We have also applied this compliance control to the Peg-in-Hole insertion task and proposed new methods of (1)rotating of the end-effector periodically in order to reduce the friction force, (2)random searching for the center of a hole and (3)trajectory modification to reduce the impact force. As a result of these new methods, it could be experimentally confirmed that the Peg-in-Hole insertion task with a clearance of 0.007 [mm] could be achieved.
We present a multi-sensor fusion method in positioning control of a robot by using fuzzy logic. In general, the vision sensor is used in the gross motion control and the force/torque sensor is used in the fine motion control. We construct a fuzzy logic controller to combine the vision sensor data and the force/torque sensor data. Also, we apply the fuzzy logic controller to the peg-in-hole process. Simulation results uphold the theoretical results.

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the performance of various force control algorithms in improving and adjusting the compliance of industrial robots in contact with their environment. Some of fundamental force control algorithms such as sensorless control, impedance control and hybrid position/force control are theoretically analyzed and simulated for various situations of an environment, and then a series of experiments using them were performed. In this paper, a control scheme to use position control in implementing the impedance control was investigated in order to nullify the effect of joint friction. The new reference trajectory is generated using contact force feedback and original desired trajectory. And an inner position control loop is designed to provide accurate position tracking for the new reference trajectory and good disturbance rejection. Experiments to insert a peg in a hole (so-called the peg-in-a-hole task) were performed with HILS (hardware-in-theloop simulation) system based on the results of the analyses and simulations on the characteristics of each control algorithm. The experiments showed that various force control methods improved the performance of robots in close contact with the environment by adjusting their compliance with respect to an arbitrary set of coordinates.
Industrial manipulators have been mostly used in large companies such as automakers and electronics companies. In recent years, however, demands for industrial manipulators from small and medium-sized enterprises are on the increase because of shortage of manpower and high wages. Since these companies cannot hire robot engineers for operation and programming of a robot, intuitive teaching and playback techniques of a robot manipulator should replace the robot programming which requires substantial knowledge of a robot. This paper proposes an intuitive teaching and playback algorithm used in assembly tasks. An operator can directly teach the robot by grasping the end-effector and moving it to the desired point in the teaching phase. The 6 axis force/torque sensor attached to the manipulator end-effector is used to sense the human intention in teaching the robot. After this teaching phase, a robot can track the target position or trajectory accurately in the playback phase. When the robot contacts the environment during the teaching and playback phases, impedance control is conducted to make the contact task stable. Peg-in-hole experiments are selected to validate the proposed algorithm since this task can describe the important features of various assembly tasks which require both accurate position and force control. It is shown that the proposed teaching and playback algorithm provides high positioning accuracy and stable contact tasks.
