EFFECT OF RESIDUAL STRESS BY SHOT PEENING ON FATIGUE STRENGTH OF LCV LEAF SPRING

  • Spring is one of major suspension part of the light commercial vehicle (LCV). In the manufacturing process it is shot-peened to improve its fatigue strength. In this paper, residual stresses by shot peening were calculated through finite element analysis, and the effects of these residual stresses on fatigue strength of leaf spring were evaluated. Fatigue tests were performed with two kinds of specimens; one is actual leaf spring assembly, and the other is simulated 3-point bending specimen. Fatigue tests were performed under the loading condition that was measured on the proving ground. From the results, the maximum load-fatigue life relation of leaf spring was defined, and test results of 3 point bending specimen are in good agreement with those of leaf spring assembly. The effects of residual stresses by shot peening on fatigue strength of leaf spring is not large in the high load range, however, in the low load range, its effects were not negligible.

  • In this paper, the fatigue characteristics of shot peened A7075-T651 alloy were compared with those of the specimens without the shot peening. The multi-spindle and single-spindle rotating bending fatigue testing machines were employed for the evaluation. Shot peening (SP) with various pressure (5 psi, 10 psi, 15 psi, 25 psi and 35 psi) were used in this test. In order to investigate the effect of the applied pressure during the SP, we carried out the surface roughness test, compressive residual stress test, hardness test, tensile test, VHCF (Very high cycle fatigue) test and SEM observation. SP induced the formation of remarkable compressive residual stress from the surface to certain depth of sample by means of the plastic deformation. The surface hardness and the fatigue characteristics of the specimens were also modified by the SP. According to the S-N curves, fatigue lives of shot peended sample with 25 psi measures 50 times higher than that of the untreated sample. The fatigue lives of shot peened sample with 15 psi and 35 psi measure approximately 10 times higher than that of the untreated ones.

  • Recently, the steel parts used at the aerospace and automobile industries are required to be used light weight parts. Therefore, used material, steel have to be a high stress, which is an indispensable condition in this field. At the consideration of parts design, high hardness of the lightweight parts have an benefit of saving fuel and material. A high stress of metal has a point of difference according to the shape of design, external cyclic load and condition of vibration. A crack generates on the surface of metal or under yield stress by defect of inner metal defect or surface defect and slowly, this crack grow stable growth. Finally, rapidity failure phenomena is happen. Fatigue failure_phenomena, which happen in metal, bring on danger in human life and property therefor, anti-fatigue failure technology take an important part of current industries Currently, the shot peening is used for removing the defect from the surface of steel and improving the fatigue strength on surface. Therefore, this paper investigated the effect on frcature toughness using shot peening which is improve the resistance of crack growth and crack expansion rate by fatigue that make a compressive residual stress on surface.

  • Nowadays, many components used in machinery industry is required lightness and high strength. The shot-peening method is used in order to improve the fatigue life of spring steel(JIS G SUP-9) which is used in suspension of automobile. The compressive residual is induced in this shot-peening process. This paper investigated the effect of the residual compressive stress on the fatigue crack growth characteristics. Main results are summarized as follows. 1. The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the level of compressive residual stress and is dependent on Paris equation. 2. Although the maximum compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, it does not improve the fatigue life comparing when maximum compressive residual stress is formed in surface. 3. The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress. 4. In fracture surface of fatigue crack growth it is investigated that compressive residual stress remarkably retards fatigue crack growth.

  • 철도 차량 대차 프레임은 주로 용접을 이용하여 제작되고 있는데 용접부에서의 피로파괴는 늘 문제가 되어왔다. 용접부의 피로강도를 향상시키기 위한 여러 방법 중 본 연구에서는 쇼트 피닝을 적용하였다. 철도 구조물에 많이 사용되는 소재의 하나인 SS400 판재를 이용하여 용접시편을 만들어 쇼트 피닝과 후열처리 유무에 따른 피로특성을 분석하였다. 피로시험결과에 의하면 쇼트 피닝은 피로강도를 향상시키는데 매우 효과적이었고 후열처리는 피로강도를 도리어 저하시키는 것으로 나타났다.

  • Toshiba has developed a laser peening system for PWRs(pressurized water reactors) as well after the one for BWRs(boiling water reactors), and applied it for BMI(bottom-mounted instrumentation) nozzles, core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles of Ikata Unit 1 and 2 of Shikoku Electric Power Company since 2004, which are Japanese operating PWR power plants. Laser pulses were delivered through twin optical fibers and irradiated on two portions in parallel to reduce operation time. For BMI nozzles, we developed a tiny irradiation head for small tubes and we peened the inner surface around J-groove welds after laser ultrasonic testing (LUT) as the remote inspection, and we peened the outer surface and the weld for Ikata Unit 2 supplementary. For core deluge line nozzles and primary water inlet nozzles, we peened the inner surface of the dissimilar metal welding, which is of nickel base alloy, joining a safe end and a low alloy metal nozzle. In this paper, the development and the actual application of the laser peening system for PWR power plants will be described.

  • 본 논문에서는 레이저 피닝(Laser peening) 구조물에 대한 피로 수명을 예측하였다. 레이저 피닝에 의해 생성된 압축잔류응력(Compressive residual stress)을 계산하기 위해서 유한 요소 시뮬레이션(Finite element simulation)을 수행하였고, 피로 수명 예측 시에 압축잔류응력 효과를 고려하기 위해서 수정된 Goodman 식을 사용하였다. 또한, S-N 선도 모델 불확실성(Model uncertainty)을 고려한 피로 수명 예측을 위해 부가 적응 인자 접근법(Additive adjustment factor approach)을 적용하여 예측된 피로 수명의 신뢰 구간(Reliable bounds)을 결정하였다.

Effect of Shot Peening on Microstructural Evolution of 500-7 Ductile Cast Iron

  • Ductile cast iron is widely used for many automotive components due to its high wear resistance and fatigue resistance in addition to the low cost of fabrication. The improvement of wear resistance and fatigue properties is key to the life time extension and performance increase of the automobile parts. Surface nanocrystallization is a very efficient way of improving the performance of materials including the wear- and fatigue-resistance. Shot peening treatment, as one of the popular and economic surface modification methods, has been widely applied to various materials. In this study, ductile cast iron specimens were ultrasonic shot peening (USP) treated for 5 to 30 min using different ball size. The microstructures were then microscopically analyzed for determination of the microstructural evolution. After the USP treatment, the hardness of pearlite and ferrite increased, in which ball size is more effective than treatment time. With USP treatment, the graphite nodule count near the surface was decreased with grain refinement. The lager balls resulted in an increased deformation, whereas the smaller balls induced more homogenously refined grains in the deformation layer. In addition, formation of nanoparticles was formed in the surface layer upon USP.

  • Plastic deformation was introduced to the austenitic (${\gamma}$) stainless steel of SS304 by air blast shot peening, ultrasonic shot peening, and ultrasonic nanocrystalline surface modification. Various deformation structures were formed. The hardness, the deformation structure and the underlying grain refinement mechanism were investigated. In the deformed region, planar dislocation arrays and deformation twin (DT), the DT-DT intersection and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite structures, and ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite were formed in the respective regions of low, medium, and high strain. The grain refinement mechanism is found to be closely related to the 1) sub-division of coarse grains by DT, shear bands and their intersection, and 2) formation of nano-sized ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite due to the high plastic deformation.

5000계열 Al 합금의 캐비테이션 특성에 관한 워터 캐비테이션 피닝의 영향 (Effects of Water Cavitation Peening on Cavitation Characteristics of 5000 Series Al Alloys)

  • 최근 FRP 선박의 폐선 처리문제, 환경 규제의 강화, 자원 재활용 등의 관점에서 소형 알루미늄 합금 선박의 건조가 증가하는 추세이다. 그러나 알루미늄은 가볍기 때문에 해양에서 고속으로 운행 가능한 알루미늄 선박은 캐비테이션이 발생되어 기포붕괴에 따른 큰 충격압력에 의해 캐비테이션 침식이 일어남으로서 재료의 수명에 있어 문제점을 드러내고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에는 캐비테이션에 의한 손상을 방지하여 내구 수명을 연장시키기 위한 방법으로 워터 캐비테이션 피닝 기술을 선박용 알루미늄 합금에 적용하였다. 이를 위하여 워터 캐비테이션 피닝을 실시하여 내캐비테이션 특성이 가장 우수한 적용 시간을 규명하였다. 선박용 알루미늄 합금 5456-H116, 5083-H321 그리고 5052-O는 워터캐비테이션 피닝을 실시함으로써 내캐비테이션 특성이 워터 캐비테이션 피닝을 하지 않은 시편보다 무게감소량이 각각 42.11 %, 50.0 % 그리고 25.7 % 개선되었다.
