In recent years, with increasing utilization of mobile devices such as smartphones, the need for PNS(Pedestrian Navigation Systems) that provide guidance for moving pedestrians is increasing. For the navigation services, road network is the most important component when it comes to creating route and guidance information. In particular, pedestrian network requires modeling methods for more detailed and vast space compared to road network. Therefore, more efficient method is needed to establish pedestrian network that was constructed by existing field survey and manual editing process. This research proposed a pedestrian network creation method appropriate for pedestrians, based on CNS(Car Navigation Systems) data that already has been broadly constructed. Pedestrian network was classified into pedestrian link(sidewalk, side street, walking facility) and openspace link depending on characteristics of walking space, and constructed by applying different methodologies in order to create path that similar to the movements of actual pedestrians. The proposed algorithm is expected to become an alternative for reducing the time and cost of pedestrian network creation.

Pedestrians not only walk along pedestrian pathways, but also choose unusual routes such as passing through buildings or crossing large scale open spaces. This study defines these unusual paths as social path, and includes them into one of the pedestrian road categories. Previous pedestrian accessibility and route choice studies could not evaluate correctly the space connectivity or optimal route because the social path was not considered properly. Therefore, this study analyzes the effectiveness of the social path in view of space connectivity focused on Coex and Seoul stations in Seoul, which are representative transit oriented development(TOD) areas. Global integration, which is widely used in network analysis, is selected (as performance index) to identify the space hierarchy and define new pedestrian links. The study results show that the network connectivity is improved especially in the main streets and social paths. This study demonstrated that the social path should be considered in finding the pedestrian optimal route from the practical perspective.
Lately construction companies are differentiating the outdoor spaces of apartment complexes to satisfy the needs of residents by providing underground parking area and variety of outdoor community spaces. Building walking networks through residential unit area, the major passage area and the entrance area of the complexes is very important factor to increase the use of the outdoor environment in the complexes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics and the elements for the planning of exterior pedestrian spaces carefully through the analysis of current large-scale apartment complexes. In this study, the utilization of space, the connectivity to other spaces and the application of Universal design were evaluated through site visits in 5 large-scale apartment complexes. As a result, the utilization of space is well applied in the most of complexes especially in residential unit area. The connectivity to other spaces has low application compared to the others. Universal design is also well applied except sub criteria for the blind in most of complexes. This study will be able to help in providing better exterior pedestrian environment for residents in apartment complexes.
Currently, level of service(LOS) analysis methods for pedestrian sidewalks are provided in Korean Highway Capacity Manual(KHCM, 2013). However, conventional methods provided in the KHCM produce most of pedestrian sidewalks' LOS as level A, indicating that existing analysis methods are unable to reflect realistic pedestrian sidewalks' LOS. The objectives of this research are to identify the suitability of current LOS criteria and to propose improved LOS evaluation criteria and methods with pedestrian volume data carried out for 10,000 sites in 2009. This research proposes new criteria by using the qualitative definition of LOS proposed by Fruin and Hall, new standard Korean human scale and new criteria of pedestrian occupancy space. Application results of new criteria show that more realistic results can be achieved than the existing methods. It is expected that applying the newly developed criteria and methods can make planning, design and construction of pedestrian sidewalks more realistic and various.

The purpose of this research is to help outdoor space planning reflected real needs of apartment residents in the differentiation elements of outdoor space, by using USC trade-off game in three apartment complexes in Seoul. This game method was used to evaluate their preference, reliability of preference degree, satisfaction degree, requirement elements such as improvement, sacrifice, maintenance of present condition, and payment possibility for improving and maintaining present condition, in addition to their preference and payment possibility of differentiation of outdoor space in the apartment complex in the future. From the statical analysis, we found the following results: 1. Reliability of preference degree was valid, inasmuch as the first elements they preferred were the almost same as the last things. 2. Elements of preference were pedestrian ways, pedestrian security facilities, various athletic facilities, and variety and high-class facilities in a play ground. 3. Satisfaction degree of differentiation elements of outdoor space was low not only in total complexes but also in each complex. As a result of analysis, these elements were not satisfied with residents. 4. Most of the differentiation elements of outdoor space in three apartment complexes, except planting traditional trees, were required to improve and maintain present condition. The cost to improve and maintain these elements able to pay by them was about 2.18 million won. Through this result, these elements were not options but prerequisites for planning outdoor space in apartment complexes. 5. In the future preference elements of differentiation of outdoor space in apartment complexes were pedestrian and jogging ways, places with water, various athletic places and facilities, multi-function resting places, green spaces in experiences, pedestrian security facilities, various athletic facilities, variety and high-class facilities in a play ground, and payment possibility for these elements was about 3.20 million won.
This paper presents an evaluation index for the supply levels of pedestrian facilities in residential area planning. The pedestrian facility supply levels reveal the quality of a residential area, and can be associated with the resident living standards and satisfaction, pedestrian safety levels, and the effectiveness of the construction cost. This research conducted multifaceted procedures for the index development, and these procedures start first by identifying dominant influencing factors on pedestrian travel demand by reviewing the final reports of site planning in more than eight already-completed residential development sites. Second, based on the Space Syntax model, which was initially developed in the UK by establishing statistical relationships among an integration index, population size (persons/day), and the total development area, this research formulated a set of pedestrian demand estimation models. Then these models were utilized in forming a pedestrian facility supply index by integrating the new models and their results with the available accepted practice in the residential planning sector. This was necessary because planners want to understand the total supply level of pedestrian facilities in a residential area during the initial design stage. Finally, to test the model validity in satisfying pedestrian satisfaction, the research included a resident satisfaction interview, and it was revealed that the evaluation index developed in this research could provide planners and engineers with more promising results. It is therefore anticipated that this research can be of service when designing pedestrian facilities in future residential area planning and design activities.

Mountains area, especially walking in open space is important for special active field which is based on mountain terrain. Recent research on pedestrian-path includes elements about pedestrian and various environment by analyzing network, but it is mainly focusing on limited space except for data-poor terrain like a mountain terrain. This paper proposes an architecture to generate walking path considering the slope for mountain terrain open space through virtual network made of mesh. This architecture shows that it reflects real terrain more effective when measuring distance using slope and is possible to generate mountain walking path using open space unlike other existing services, and is verified through the test. The proposed architecture is expected to utilize for pedestrian-path generation way considering mountain terrain open space in case of distress, mountain rescue and tactical training and so on.
The purpose of this study is to propose a planning method for increasing visitors' usage attraction by understanding user circulation in the large scale commercial complex. Focusing on the impact of anchor tenant on the pedestrian traffic arousing visitors' usage attraction flow, this study analyzed pedestrian circulation and traffic volume of Lotte World Mall, a large scale commercial complex. In this study, the change of pedestrian traffic in the commercial complex was investigated and the circulation flow of anchor tenant visitors such as movie theater in the commercial complex was simulated by computer. By analyzing both characteristics of pedestrian circulation and traffic volume in large scale commercial complex and movie theater users' pedestrian traffic with network-based computer simulation, positive relationship between pedestrian traffic to movie theater and pedestrian traffic dispersion of the whole commercial complex users was emerged. In addition, It is necessary to plan of distributing pedestrian traffic of vertical moving line in central space appropriately for using attraction function of anchor tenant.
Inspired by the success of the High-line project in New York, The Seoul Metropolitan Government launched a project to convert an overpass near Seoul station into a pedestrian park. Seoullo 7017 went through instant success after its opening in May 2017; however, there is a continuous controversy over its long-term impact as shown in the exemplary cases like the High-line project. This study aims for quantitative investigation through the comparative analysis between Seoullo 7017 and the High-Line in the perspectives of spatial configuration. Space Syntax was chosen as the analysis method for this research. Integration (3) in Space Syntax is known to have a high correlation with pedestrian volume; thus, by using this method, spatial structure was analyzed by comparing the statistically verified results of changes in the spatial structure of the Highline with those in Seoul. The results indicated that the influence of Seoullo 7017 was less than that of the High-line in terms of spatial configuration. The reason for this difference is spatial configuration between Manhattan and Seoul. The High-line is located in Manhattan which has an urban grid structure, whereas Seoul has non-geometric urban structure, the neighborhood unit in Korea. Also the center of the overpass isn't connected well with its surroundings.

A Gabor filter is a linear filter used for edge detectionas frequency and orientation representations of Gabor filters are similar to those of the human visual system. In this thesis, we propose a pedestrian detection algorithm using a Gabor filter bank. In order to extract the features of the pedestrian, we use various image processing algorithms and data structure algorithms. First, color image segmentation is performed to consider the information of the RGB color space. Second, histogram equalization is performed to enhance the brightness of the input images. Third, convolution is performed between a Gabor filter bank and the enhanced images. Fourth, statistical values are calculated by using the integral image (summed area table) method. The calculated statistical values are used for the feature matrix of the pedestrian area. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, the INRIA pedestrian database and SVM (Support Vector Machine) are used, and we compare the proposed algorithm and the HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradient) pedestrian detector, presentlyreferred to as the methodology of pedestrian detection algorithm. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more accurate compared to the HOG pedestrian detector.
