  • The study on 'support for V2V(Vehicle to Vehicle) services based on LTE sidelink' has been carried out in 3GPP RAN working group. The conventional LTE sidelink technology is not adequate for high speed V2V communications because the conventional DM-RS(Demodulation Reference signal) structure is developed for pedestrian environment. While the typical speed of pedestrian environment is 3km/h, that of V2V communications is 120 km/h and the information on channel estimation is not sufficient with legacy DM-RS structure. In this paper, improved DM-RS structures for V2V communications that have rapid channel variation are introduced and the performance of channel estimation accuracy is analyzed. Simulation results show that the performance improvement of channel estimation can be achieved based on extended sub-carrier spacing structure resulted from reduced inter-carrier interference. However, the extended sub-carrier spacing requires the longer cyclic prefix and higher overhead. As a results of considerations on DM-RS modification, the sub-carrier spacing is maintained and the high density of DM-RS is applied for V2V communications.

  • Many countries have provided support for research and development and implemented policies for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for enhancing the safety of vehicles. With such efforts, the toll of casualties due to traffic accidents has decreased gradually. Korea has exhibited the lowest toll of casualties due to traffic accidents and is ranked 32nd in mortality among the 35 OECD members. Traffic accidents typically fall into three categories depending on the cause of the accident: vehicle to vehicle (V2V), vehicle to pedestrian (V2P), and vehicle independent. Most accidents are caused by drivers' mistakes in recognition, judgment, or operation. ADAS has been proposed to prevent and reduce accidents from such human errors. Moreover, the global automobile industry has recently been developing various safety measures, but on-road tests are still limited and contain various risks. Therefore, this study investigated the international standards for evaluation tests with regard to the assessment techniques in braking capability to cope with the limitations of on-road tests. A theoretical formula for braking force and a control algorithm are proposed, which were validated by comparing the results with those from an on-road test. These results verified the braking force depending on the functions of ADAS. The risks of on-road tests can be reduced because the proposed theoretical formula allows a prediction of the tendencies.

  • Tension viscerothorax (gastrothorax) is rare life-threatening disease which is caused by air trapped in viscera. A distended viscera in the hemi-thorax shifts the mediastinal structures and causes extra-cardiac obstructive shock. A defective diaphragm is caused by abdominal trauma or a congenital anomaly. Traumatic diaphragmatic injury can be missed until herniation develops several years after blunt trauma. In our case, a 10-year old boy developed hemodynamic compromise in the emergency department. Three years earlier, he had suffered blunt abdominal trauma during a pedestrian traffic accident, but there was no evidence of diaphragmatic injury at that time. He was successfully resuscitated by gastric decompression and an emergent thoracic operation. The operation finding revealed a traumatic diaphragmatic injury. Tension viscerothorax is a rare, but catastrophic, condition, so we suggest that addition of tension viscerothorax to the Advanced Trauma and Life Support (ATLS) guidelines may be helpful.

  • Many policies, such as transit-oriented development, encouraged use of bicycle and pedestrian, reduction of green house gas (GHG) and etc., have been deployed to support transport sustainability. Although various studies regarding GHG were presented, no one has yet adequately explained the behavior of travelers. This paper proposes a GHG emission model by highlighting its sensitivity, elasticity with regard to such travel cost as travel time, travel fare, and GHG pricing, introduced to reduce the amount of GHG in transportation system. For better estimation of GHG, the proposed model adopts (1) a production-constrained gravity model and (2) the travel distance from the origin and the destination (OD). The gravity model has a merit that it considers travel pattern between OD pairs. The model was tested with an example, and the promising results confirmed its validation and applications.

  • University campus has grown and developed along with history of human in connection with transition characteristics of city. In particular, reflecting the features in the times, the masterplan should explore its main roles today when international growth of university is pursued. In particular, center core and quad space, focusing on main components of campus such as main building, student union hall and main lecture facility, are the prototype of campus components and have been pursued to have importance in terms of shape and function as traditional campus space strategy. Recently, however, new strategy has been proposed to explore orders of campus utilizing the underground space focusing on main universities. Design of Hana Plaza of Korea University and Bekyangro of Yeonsei University, the targets of this study, actively explore this strategy. This study analyzed such strategies in terms of concept of space to obtain space, design trend of main universities at home and abroad, and viewpoint of integrated masterplan proposal. Conclusions from this study are as follows. First, concept of quad and center space found in the design of traditional campus is reinterpreted into new design aspects through development of underground space. Second, development of underground space is approached to overcome the limit of existing campus and to present the vision of universities 100 years ahead. Third, ever-changing complicated urban environment has been reflected in space configuration of campus and positioned as strategy to implement this as modern construction technique. Third, implementation of pedestrian-oriented campus has been pursued by reinforcing utilization of inclined topography of urban environment in Korea. This enables to obtain spaces for main activities of students and to implement the space where student support facilities are concentrated and activities are performed actively. Such features can be presented as conclusions of this study.

  • This paper described an Enhanced-xVSB system for improving mobile/pedestrian reception performance to the ATSC(Advanced Television System Committee) DTV 8-VSB transmission standard. E-xVSB system can transmit a mixture of normal (8-VSB) stream and enhanced (robust) stream. The robust stream has a higher threshold of visibility (TOV) compared to the standard stream, and legacy receivers ignore the robust packets. Thus, Enhanced-xVSB system is fully backward compatible with a current ATSC standard. For mobile and portable reception support, E-xVSB system adopts a reduced constellation methodas well as enhanced trellis-coded modulation scheme. E-xVSB system supports a variety of enhanced modulation schemes : Pseudo-2VSB, Enhanced-4VSB, modified Enhanced-8VSB and Hybrid-VSB. Proposed E-xVSB system performs well under serious dynamic multipath reception environment.

  • This study focuses on the reconstruction of buffer greens which were installed to reduce environmental effects on roadsides constructed in the 1980s, in order to supplement various urban green functions. The subjects were buffer greens installed along the Songpadaero and Nambusunwhanro in Songpa-gu. Planting was suggesting to strengthen the buffer, landscape, shading and ecological function according to the use of the buffer green surroundings. The surroundings of the green axis subjects are high-rise apartment areas, neighboring commercial areas, commercial working areas, transportation facility areas, urban support facility areas, schools, parks, etc. However, the structure of the buffer greens were uniformed with Plantanus occidentalis and Ginkgo biloba and Zelkova serrata in the canopy layer and with Forsythia koreana and Ligustrum obtusifoliumin the shrub layer in lineal or alternate order, functioning only as buffer space. Therefore, the buffer greens need to be reconstructed, supplementing various functions according to land use, in order to improve the pedestrian walk area in terms of landscape and use of greens. In line with that, the planting improvement plans according to the land use patterns, and physical and ecological structure were classified into buffer and landscape, landscape and buffer, buffer and shading, and buffer and ecological function. In addition, improving planting function, species and facilities are suggested.

  • The traffic signal controllers being used in the domestic currently are being manufactured based on the korean national police standard which was developed for controlling the quad-light traffic signal having the red, yellow, left-turn arrow, and green lights. But according to the national policy for the traffic operation, they have to be changed to be able to switch the tri-light signal having red, yellow and green lights. In this study, a new tri-light traffic signal controller was designed and developed by the way improving the Signal Control Unit of the existing quad-light standard traffic controller. The Load Signal Unit(LSU) was improved to output 6 signals which are the two assemblies of three signal indications having the red, yellow, and green lights. To enough traffic signals output to control each directional movements and the various transport modes which are car, bus, bike, and pedestrian etc., the connector bus system was designed to be able to accommodate maximum 96 signals outputs being constructed by 16 LSUs. Flasher device was developed to be able to support maximum 32 red signals. In the software, the communication protocol between traffic control center and the traffic signal controller was improved and new signal map code values were defined for the developed LSU controlling the quad-light traffic signal. A model of the quad-light traffic signal controller developed and was tested three operations, protocol-operation, remote-command and control-mode. The test result operated all of them successfully.

  • Histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) feature is widely used in vision-based pedestrian detection. The interpolation is the most important technique in HOG feature calculation to provide high detection rate. In interpolation technique of HOG feature calculation, two nearest orientation bins to gradient orientation for each pixel and the corresponding weights are required. In this paper, therefore, an efficient gradient orientation bin and weight calculation circuit for HOG feature is proposed. In the proposed circuit, pre-calculated values are defined in tables to avoid the operations of tangent function and division, and the size of tables is minimized by utilizing the characteristics of tangent function and weights for each gradient orientation. Pipeline architecture is adopted to the proposed circuit to accelerate the processing speed, and orientation bins and the corresponding weights for each pixel are calculated in two clock cycles by applying efficient coarse and fine search schemes. Since the proposed circuit calculates gradient orientation for each pixel with the interval of $1^{\circ}$ and determines both orientation bins and weights required in interpolation technique, it can be utilized in HOG feature calculation to support interpolation technique to provide high detection rate.
