The Poland`s syndrome is very rare anomaly, which consists of congenital unilateral absence of the sternocostal part of the pectoralis major muscle, with ipsilateral hand deformities. The clinical features are variable but all patients have absence of at least the sternal head of the pectoralis major muscle. The syndrome is not hereditary and is of unknown origin. Early recognition of Poland`s syndrome may give the provision of psychologic and genetic counseling for anxious parents. We have encountered two patients with this entity, and one of them underwent successful surgical correction.
The study aim was to investigate a comparison of muscle activity fatigue between maximal and submaximal strength gains during the bench press in men. It was hypothesized that maximal voluntary contraction (%MVC) would similar gains between maximal and submaximal strength gains during the bench press, but median frequency (MDF) would increase in maximal compared with submaximal exercise. Employing a randomized, counterbalanced crossover design, 12 men were asked to perform maximal repetitions and submaximal repetitions (concentric: 1-s, eccentric: 1-s, 2-s/repetition) to failure with a load of 85% of 1RM for the bench press, with a 3-minute recovery between the sets. Each subject was tested for the number of repetitions and sets, total work in bench press. Surface electromyography (EMG) was recorded from the pectoralis major, deltoid anterior, and triceps brachii for %MVC and MDF. Total work was significantly higher in the submaximal repetition exercise than that the maximal repetition exercise (p<.05). Muscle fatigue of pectoralis major, deltoid anterior and triceps brachii were significantly smaller in the submaximnal repetition exercise than that the maximal repetition exercise (p<.05, respectively). However, muscle activity of pectoralis major, deltoid anterior, and triceps brachii were not significantly different between exercises. Our study showed that a smaller muscle fatigue in submaximal repetitions, despite higher in total work and a similar in muscle activity were observed. These results suggest that submaximal repetitions during the bench press would be enhanced intensity and/or volume compared with maximal repetitions exercise.
Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate basic data about the effects of muscle energy technique on the shoulder complex range of motion and posture alignment in the round shoulder posture. Methods: The subjects included 15 women that gave consent to participate in the study voluntarily. They performed the muscle energy technique for 30 minutes twice. The round shoulder posture was measured with a straight edge ruler. The shoulder complex range of motion was measured with the apley scratch test. The forward head posture was measured with ImageJ. The pectoralis minor muscle length was measured with a tape measure. Results: There were statistically significant differences in the round shoulder posture both right and left (p<.05). The experiment group showed statistically significant differences in the pectoralis minor muscle length (p<.05). There were significant differences in the shoulder complex range of motion including flexion, left lateral flexion, right lateral flexion, left side bending, and right side bending (p<.05), but no significant differences were found in extension (p>.05). The forward head posture showed significant differences in CVA changes (p<.05) and no significant differences in CRA changes (p>.05). Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that the muscle energy technique relaxed muscles around the shoulders and increased the shoulder complex range of motion. The technique is also expected to prevent pain in the neck and shoulders and lower injury risk. In conclusion, the muscle energy technique can be applied as an effective intervention for round shoulder posture.
Purpose: Due to the high incidence of shoulder injuries, including shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS), among CrossFit practitioners due to frequent overhead movements, serratus anterior exercises are considered crucial for scapular stabilization in both intervention and prevention. Objective: The objective of this study is to compare the muscle activity and ratios of scapular stabilizing and shoulder girdle muscles between individuals with and without SIS during serratus punch and wall slide exercises, both targeting the serratus anterior muscle, in CrossFit training practitioners. Methods: Surface electromyography was used to compare the muscle activity and activity ratio of scapular stabilizing muscles and shoulder muscles during serratus punch and wall slide exercises in two groups of 20 CrossFit practitioners: ten with SIS and ten without symptoms. Results: The group with SIS showed higher activation of the pectoralis major, upper trapezius, and a higher pectoralis major/serratus anterior and upper trapezius/serratus anterior muscle activation ratio during the serratus punch exercise compared to the group without SIS. Similarly, during the wall slide exercise, the group with SIS exhibited higher activation of the upper trapezius and a higher upper trapezius/serratus anterior muscle activation ratio compared to the group without SIS. However, no significant difference in serratus anterior muscle activation was observed between the two groups. Conclusions: This study highlights the higher activation of the pectoralis major and upper trapezius muscles in CrossFit practitioners with SIS during the serratus anterior exercise, suggesting the importance of minimizing the overactivation of these muscles to prevent impingement syndrome in this population.
In reverse ball shoulder replacement, surgery is usually performed using a deltopectoral approach or an anterosuperior transdeltoid approach. The deltopectoral approach is to incise the pectoralis major to upper 1/3 to 1/2, and subscapularis tendon should be removed at the lesser tuberosity of the humerus. This approach has the problem of breaking the shoulder deltoid instead of incising the rotator cuff. Therefore, we report a detailed procedure of reverse ball shoulder replacement using approach without incision of the pectoralis major muscle and subscapularis muscle.
This study aimed to determine the effect of dietary supplementation with Acremonium terricola culture (ATC) on the quality, conventional characteristics, and flavor substances of Hortobágy goose meat. A total of 720 one-day-old goslings were divided into four dietary treatments, each consisting of six cages of 30 goslings. The dietary conditions consisted of the control group and three treatment groups supplemented with 3, 5, or 7 g/kg ATC. In male geese, supplementation with 3 g/kg ATC elevated the crude ash (CA) content of the thigh muscle compared to the control group, and the CA content of the pectoralis major was significantly elevated when geese were supplemented with 5 g/kg ATC (p < 0.05). In females, compared with the control group, supplementation with 7 g/kg ATC enhanced the crude protein (CP) content of the pectoralis major. Supplementation with 7 g/kg ATC also increased the crude fat (CF) content of the pectoralis major in females as well as in both sexes; moreover, this supplementation dose increased the inosinic acid content of the thigh muscle in males and in both sexes. In contrast, supplementation with 5 g/kg ATC decreased the pH of the thigh muscle at 12 h postmortem (p < 0.01). No significant changes in meat color, water loss rate, shear force, moisture content or amino acid (AA) levels were observed after ATC supplementation (p > 0.05). Levels of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) in the pectoralis major and levels of SFAs, monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs), and PUFAs in the thigh muscle were not affected by the supplementation. Overall, ATC supplementation had positive effects on the pH, and CA, CP, CF, inosinic acid contents as well as on the FA composition of gosling meat. The optimal level of ATC supplementation was 7 g/kg in goslings from 1 to 70 days of age.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the scapulothoracic joint movement between different weight bearing contributing to effective bench press exercise. Ten male subjects participated in this study. All subjects were tested on the flat bench press machine which modified weight (50% and 70% of 1RM) and subjects were performed two different conditions(none protraction condition and protraction condition). Weight bar height and vertical velocity, EMG activation was measured using 3D motion capture system and wireless EMG analysis system. As the results, none protraction condition showed that it is more concentrate better pectoralis major muscle activation than protraction condition and middle pectoralis major, anterior deltoid and triceps brachii was significant higher integrated EMG in 70% of 1RM condition. In conclusion, limited scapulothoracic joint movement was more effective activated pectoralis major muscle all the weight through, while we could not find that it was not affected integrated EMG on eight muslces related to shoulder complex between scapulothracic joint movement conditions.
Posture of the upper limbs in field works is known to be an important risk factor associated with CTD(Cumulative Trauma Disorders). In particular, uncomfortable posture and highly repetitive works in shipbuilding industry(for instance, sand blasting, grinding and blast painting, etc) made workers exposed to a great risk of injuries. The purpose of this paper is to analyze recruitment pattern of the muscles according to posture(joint angle displacement) during grinding. In this study, EMG signals of pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, and posterior deltoid muscle were measured and analyzed from FlexComp EMG solution. And subjective ratings of perceived exertion were made using Borg's CR-10 rating scale.
