This study is to propose temporal pattern of design rainfall which causes maximum peak discharge and to analyze the variation in peak discharge according to design rainfall durations. In this study, the Mononobe, the Yen and Chow triangular, the Huff's 4th quartiles and the Keifer and Chu methods are applied to estimate the proper temporal pattern of design rainfall and three rainfall-runoff models such as SCS, Nakayasu, and Clark methods are used to estimate the runoff hydrograph. And to examine the variability of peak discharge, the hydrologic characteristics from the rainfall-runoff models to which uniform rainfall intensity is applied are used as the standard values. The type of temporal pattern of design rainfall which causes maximum peak discharge in both of the watersheds and the rainfall-runoff models has resulted in Yen and Chow distribution method with the dimensionless vague of 0.75. On the basis of determined temporal pattern, the examination of the variability of peak discharge according to design rainfall durations shows that design rainfall duration varies greatly with the types of probable intensity formula, and the variation of peak discharge is more affected by the types of probable intensity formula and I-D-F currie than rainfall-runoff models.
In this study, unit hydrographs are calculated when precipitations of 10 scales instantaneously occurs in a virtual watershed with a constant slope and roughness. Then, the relationship between the peak flow rate and the peak occurrence time of the unit hydrograph was calculated for the precipitation scale, respectively. At this time, the virtual watershed simplified with a rhombic shape, a constant slope, and a flow condition with a certain roughness was applied instead of a natural watershed in order to understand the effect the precipitation scale has on the peak value of the unit hydrograph. And it was assumed that the precipitation in the basin was effective rainfall and the runoff was direct runoff, and the runoff flowed in a straight, uniform flow from the drop point to the outlet. The relationship between the peak flow and the peak occurrence time of the unit hydrograph was calculated in the case of 10 types of precipitation scales of 10 mm, 40 mm, 90 mm, 160 mm, 250 mm, 360 mm, 640 mm, 1,000 mm, 1,210 mm, and 1,690 mm of effective precipitation. A noteworthy achievement of this study is that, even without the storage effect of the watershed, as the scale of precipitation increases, the depth of runoff increases, so the flow rate in the watershed increases and the distance per unit time increases, so the peak flow rate increases and the peak occurrence time increases. This is a nonlinear characteristic of watershed runoff.
This study analyzes the reduction effects of runoff and flood damage through different arrangements of stormwater storage facilities. Three scenarios based on the spatial allocation of storage capacity are used: concentrated, decentralized and combinative. The characteristics of runoff and flood damage by scenario are compared. The XP-SWMM model is used for runoff simulation by the probable rainfall of return period. The result shows that the concentrated arrangement of storage facilities is most effective to reduce the amount of peak flow and to delay the time of peak flow. Yet, while the concentrated arrangement is most effective to reduce the inundation damage, it is not effective to reduce runoff volume. The decentralized arrangement is most effective to reduce runoff volume. The combinative arrangement is effective not only the runoff reduction but also the reduction of flood damage. The result indicates that the flood mitigation strategies against heavy rainfall need to consider decentralized on-site arrangement for the reduction of runoff volume along with concentrated off-site arrangement of storage facilities.
In this study, the urban runoff models, ILLUDAS model and SWMM, are analyzed the probable peak discharge and discharge using rainfall distribution by Huff's method at Bum-uh chun area in Taegu city. The probability rainfall and intensity is analyzed by Pearson-III type. The rainfall duration, 90 minutes, is determined by the critical duration computed the maximun peak discharge for some rainfall durations. The peak discharge according to Huff's rainfall distribution types compute in order of type 3, type 4, type2, and type 1, so Huff's 3 type is selected as an adequate rainfall distribution in Bum-uh chun basin. ILLUDAS model and SWMM are shown as good models in Bum-uh chun, but SWMM is computed higher peak discharge than ILLUDAS model, so SWMM is shown as the adequate urban runoff model for the design of interior drainage in urban basin.
Recently, changes in rainfall intensity and patterns have been causing increasing soil loss worldwide. As a result, the water ecosystem becomes worse and crops yield are reduced with soil loss and nutrient loss with it. Many studies have been proposed to estimate runoff and soil loss to predict or decrease non-point source pollution. Although the USLE has been used for many years in estimating soil losses, the USLE cannot reflect effects on soil loss of changes in rainfall intensity and patterns. The WEPP, physically based model, is capable of predicting soil loss and runoff using various rainfall intensity. In this study, the WEPP model was simulated for sediment yield, runoff and peak runoff using data of 5, 10, 30, 60 minute term rainfall, Huff's method and design rainfall. In case of rainfall interval of 5 minutes and 60 minutes, the sediment and runoff values decreased by 24% and 19%, respectively. The peak rate runoff values decreased by 16% when rainfall interval changed from 5 minutes to 60 minutes, indicating the peak rate runoff values are affected by rainfall intensity to some degrees. As a result of simulating using Huff's method, all values (sediment yield, runoff, peak runoff) were found to be the greatest at third quartile. According to the analysis under various design rainfall conditions (2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 100, 200, 300 years frequency), sediment yield, runoff, and peak runoff of 906.2%, 249.4% and 183.9% were estimated using 2 year to 300 year frequency rainfall data.

Abstract Over 700/0 of the rural land area in Korea is mountainous and small watersheds provide most of the water resources for agricutural use. To provide an appropriate tool for the agricultural water resource development project, SNUA2, a mathematical model for simulating the physical processes governing the precipitation-runoff relationships and predicting the storm and long-term runoff quantities from the small mountainous watersheds was developed. The hydrological characteristics of small mountainous watersheds were reviewed to select appropriate theories for the simulation of the runoff processes, and a deterministic and distributed model was developed. In this, subsurface flows are routed by solving Richard's two dimensional equation, the dynamics of soil moisture contents are simulated by the consideration of phenological factors of canopy plants and surface flows are routed by solving the kinematic wave theory by numerical analysis. As a result of an application test of the model to the Sanglim watershed, peak flow rates of storm runoff were over-estimated by up to 184.2%. The occurence time of peak flow and total runoff volume of storm runoffs simulated were consistent with observed values and the annual runoff volumes were simulated in the error range of less than 5.8%.

This study is aimed at the development of a runoff forecasting model by using the Fuzzy inference system and Neural Network model to solve the uncertainties occurring in the process of rainfall-runoff modeling and improve the modeling accuracy of the stream runoff forecasting. The Neuro-Fuzzy (NF) model were used in this study. The NF model, recently received a great deal of attention, improve the existing Neural Networks by the aid of the Fuzzy theory applied to each node. The study area is the downstreams of Naeseung-chun. Therefore, time-dependent data was obtained from the Wolpo water level gauging station. 11 and 2 out of total 13 flood events were selected for the training and testing set of model respectively. The schematic diagram method and the statistical analysis are conducted to evaluate the feasibility of rainfall-runoff modeling. The model accuracy was rapidly decreased as the forecasting time became longer. The NF model can give accurate runoff forecasts up to 4 hours ahead in standard above the Determination coefficient $(R^2)$ 0.7. In the comparison of the runoff forecasting using the NF and TANK models, characteristics of peak runoff in the TANK model was higher than ones in the NF models, but peak values of hydrograph in the NF models were similar.

In this study, three different unit hydrograph methods (NRCS, Snyder and Clark) in the HEC-HMS were compared to find better fit with the observed data in the Namgang-Dam watershed. The Sancheong, Shinan, and Changchon in Namgang-Dam watershed were selected as the study watersheds. The input data for HEC-HMS were calculated land use, digital elevation map, stream, and watershed map provided by WAter Management Information System (WAMIS). Sixty six storms from 2004 to 2011 were selected for model calibration and validation. Three unit hydrograph methods were compared with the observed data in terms of simulated runoff volume, and peak runoff for the selected storms. The results showed that the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) for the peak runoff was 0.8295~0.9999 and root mean square error (RMSE) was 0.029~0.086 mm/day for calibration stages. In the model validation, $R^2$ for the peak runoff was 0.9061~0.9916 and RMSE was 0.030~0.088 mm/day which were more accurate than calibrated data. Analysis of variance showed that there was no significant difference among the three unit hydrograph methods.
AGNPS model is an event-based model to analyze nonpoint-source and to examine potential water quality problems from agricultural watershed. This model uses a square grid-cell system to represent the spatial variability of watershed conditions, and simulates runoff, sediment, and nutrient transport for each cell. AGNPS model was applied on Yeonwha watershed, and the test results were compared with the measured data for runoff volume, peak runoff rate, suspended solids, and phosphorus concentration. The watershed of 278.8 ha was divided into 278 cells, each of which was 1 ha in size. The coefficients of determination for runoff volume and peak flow were (0.893 and 0.801 respectively from regression of the estimated values on the measured values. The concentration of suspendid solid was increased but decreased that of phosphate with runoff volume.
This study was conducted to identify the runoff characteristics of non-point source according to rainfall in Nam watershed. Land-uses of the Nam watershed were surveyed paddy field 4.5%, crop field 6.8%, mountainous 78.7%, urban 2.4%, and etc. 7.7%. Mean runoff coefficients in each area were observed Ⅰ area 0.08, Ⅱ area 0.08, and Ⅲ area 0.05. In the relationship between the rainfall and peak-flow, correlation coefficients(r) were investigated Ⅰ area -0.8609, Ⅱ area 0.6035, and Ⅲ area -0.4913. In the relationship between the antecedent dry period and first flow runoff, correlation coefficients(r) were investigated Ⅰ area -0.9093, Ⅱ area -0.1039, and Ⅲ area -0.7317. The discharge of pollutant concentrations relates to the flow rate of storm-water. In the relationship between the rainfall and watershed loading, exponent values of BOD, COD, SS, and T-N were estimated to 1.2751, 1.2003, 1.3744, and 1.1262, respectively.
