  • Among various Green Infrastructure measures for urban stormwater management, effects of porous pavement were quantitatively examined in terms of hydrological cycle. Different scenarios for porous pavement were introduced on a SWMM model and the effects were compared and analysed using discharge hydrographs. Two types of pavements having different runoff coefficients (0.05 & 0.5) were introduced to cover different ratio of entire road areas (100 %, 77.5 % and 40.4 %) and these made up in total 6 different scenarios. Total runoff volume was reduced and peak flow was significantly decreased by applying the porous pavement. The highest reduction for total runoff was shown from S-6(covering area: 100 %, runoff coefficient: 0.05) as 19 % followed by S-5(covering area: 77.5 %, runoff coefficient: 0.05, 16 %), while that of S-2(covering area: 40.4 %, runoff coefficient: 0.05) and S-1(covering area: 40.4 %, runoff coefficient: 0.5) were the lowest with 8 % and 5 %. This proved that the application of porous pavement would improve urban hydrological cycle.

  • This study was carried out to investigate coefficient and exponent of runoff energy in MUSLE for small forest watershed, Hwachoen watershed in Gangwon-do. For 15 rainfall events, runoff volume, peak discharge and sediment yield were measured and these data were used to calculate coefficient and exponent of runoff energy. The results of this study showed that $LS{\bullet}K{\bullet}C{\bullet}P$ factors of MUSLE were affected by slope steepness. The coefficient and exponent of runoff energy were validated with coefficient of efficiency of 0.92 and these values were suggested to 0.002 and 0.81 respectively. The comparison of the coefficients and exponents between Hwacheon and other forest watersheds showed that these values would reflect the effect of forest management within watershed.

  • One of the structural measures for the peak flow reduction is infiltration facilities. There are many types in infiltration facilities - infiltration basin, trench, bed, porous pavement, percolated subdrain, dry well. In this study runoff reduction effect of infiltration trench is analyzed by WinSLAMM. Runoff reduction effect is investigated by each design rainfall and temporal pattern of rainfall particularly. The biggest reduction is shown in Yen and Chow's temporal pattern of design rainfall and the smallest reduction is shown in Huff's first quartile pattern. Runoff reduction rate is presented about 6 to 14 percentage, and the larger return period, the smaller runoff reduction rate.

  • land application of sewage sludge requires careful monitoring because of its potential for contamination of surface water and groundwater. A rainfall simulator was used to investigated the effects of freshly applied sludge on runoff of sediment and nutrients from agricultural crop lands. Rain was applied to 16 experimental field plots. A three run sequence was used to simulate different initial moisture conditions. Runoff, sediment and nutrient losses were monitored at the base of each plot during the simulated rainfall events. Sludge was surface applied and incorporated at conventionally -tilled plots and surface applied at no-till plots, at rates of 0, 75, 150 kg-N/ha. No-till practices greatly reduced runoff, sediment , and nutrient losses form the sludge treated plots, relative to the conventional tillage practices. Incorporation of the sludge was effective in reducing nutrient yields at the conventionally-tilled plots. This effect was more pronounced during the third rain torm, with wet initial conditions. Peak loadings of nutrients appeared during the rainstorm with wet initial conditions.

  • The schemes synthesizing the instantaneous unit hydrograph(IUH) are presented by using the geomorphologic parameters of a basin. To this end, the channels in the network are numbered according to the Strahler scheme, and the mathematical formulation corresponding to a dynamic probability theory for deriving the geomorphologic IUH(GUH) is refered to the existing techniques adopted by Rodriguez-Iturbe and Valdes. Also, the mean runoff velocity is applied for expressing a dynamic state of flow. The applicability of the GUH to the real drainage basins is tested by using the data observed in a few basins with areas of the order of 9.2, 20, 33.63, and $109.73km^2$ in Korea. The test is carried out by checking the discrepancies between the observed and simulated values for the peak discharge and its time of occurrence which are the most important parameters of an IUH by varing the mean runoff velocity and the inputs. As a result, good agreement is found between them, and it is shown that the variability in peak discharge of hydrograph depends on the mean runoff velocity more than the constant loss rate.

  • Based on the kinematic wave equations, the influence of moving rainstorms on the surface runoff were analyzed with a focus on the rainfall distribution types. Applied hypothetical rainfall distribution types of moving rainstorms used are uniform, advanced, delayed and intermediate type. The moving rainstorm velocities applied in this study were $0.125{\sim}2.0m/s$ of moving upstream and downstream direction of plane surface. Simulations were undertaken by varying the rainfall distribution type, moving rainstorm velocity and moving direction, and the results were compared with that of stationary rainfall. The results indicate significant differences in peak discharges and hydrograph shapes for moving rainstorms of various rainfall patterns and moving directions. It shows that the moving rainstorms of downstream direction generate the largest peak runoff at all rainfall distributions. The sensitivity of runoff to rainfall distribution types decreases as storm velocity increases. It is clear that faster rainstorm velocity generates faster peak time and becomes thin hydrographs rapidly.

  • A relation between the temporal variation of rainfall and direct runoff was characterized using temporal indexes of rainfall(1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th moment). Curve Number has a relation with 1st and 2nd moment for AMCIII condition when the rainfall duration is relative (10th quantile). Also peak runoff ratio(QP/Q) has a relation with 1st and End moment for AMCIII condition as well as 3rd and 4th moment for AMC I condition. Considering all durations of rainfall, alternatively, Curve Number has a relation with 1st and 2nd moment for AMCIIIcondition besides every moments for AMC I condition. But peak runoff ratio(QP/Q) has few relations excepting 3rd and 4th moment for AMC I condition. As a results, temporal indexes of rainfall are useful to determine curve numbers regarding the temporal variation of rainfall.

  • The adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) which had a success for time series prediction and system control was applied for modeling the hourly runoff in the Gapcheon watershed. The ANFIS used the antecedent rainfall and runoff as the input. The ANFIS was trained by varying the various simulation factors such as mean areal rainfall estimation, the number of input variables, the type of membership function and the number of membership function. The root mean square error (RMSE), mean peak runoff error (PE), and mean peak time error (TE) were used for validating the ANFIS simulation. The ANFIS predicted runoff was in good agreement with the measured runoff and the applicability of ANFIS for modelling the hourly runoff appeared to be good. The forecasting ability of ANFIS up to the maximum 8 lead hour was investigated by applying the different input structure to ANFIS model. The accuracy of ANFIS for predicting the hourly runoff was reduced as the forecasting lead hours increased. The long-term predictability of ANFIS for forecasting the hourly runoff at longer lead hours appeared to be limited. The ANFIS might be useful for modeling the hourly runoff and has an advantage over the physically based models because the model construction of ANFIS based on only input and output data is relatively simple.

  • To design the minor structures in the small watersheds, it is required to calculate the peak discharge. For these calculations the simple peak flow prediction equations, the unit hydrograph method. the syntheic unit hydrograph methods or the runoff simulation models are adopted. To use these methods it is generally requried to know the amount and the distributions of the design rainfall; which are the uniform distribution, the trangular distribution, the trapezoidal distribution, or the Huff type distribution. In this study, the peak discharges are calculated by the different rainfall distributions and the results are compared.

  • This study analyzed rainfall-runoff characteristics by deriving multiple impulse responses. The concept of competing impulse responses was used for deriving multiple impulse responses. Based on this concept, each response function derived competes to be selected for simulating the runoff measured. This concept of competing linear impulse responses was applied to four basins, Jeongseon, Yeongwol, Youngchoon and Chungju Dam. One to three impulse responses have been derived and compared each other considering basin characteristics. First, in case of deriving one linear impulse response, the peak flow of the impulse response was found to be increased according to their study basins area. In case of deriving two linear impulse response, the peak flow of the first impulse response and the duration of the second impulse response were increased according to their basin size. The case of deriving three impulse response showed similar characteristics of deriving two impulse responses. However, the peak flow of third impulse response was very small and lasted quite long time. Summarizing these results considering the basin characteristics, the first impulse response seems to be related with the surface runoff, the second impulse with the surface runoff and interflow, and the third impulse response with the interflow and base flow.
