  • The main objective of critical excitation methods is to reveal the worst possible response of structures. This goal is accomplished by considering the uncertainties of ground motion, which is subjected to the appropriate constraints, such as earthquake power and intensity limit. The concentration of this current study is on the theoretical optimization aspect, as is the case with the majority of conventional critical excitation methods. However, these previous studies on critical excitation lead to a discontinuous power spectral density (PSD). This paper introduces some critical excitations which contain proper continuity in frequency domain. The main idea for generating such continuous excitations stems from the combination of two continuous functions. On the other hand, in order to provide a non-stationary model, this paper attempts to present an appropriate envelope function, which unlike the previous envelope functions, can properly cover the natural earthquakes' accelerograms based on multi-peak conditions. Finally, the proposed method is developed into the multiple-degree-of-freedom (M.D.O.F) structures.

  • Surface modification is a type of mechanical manipulation skills to achieve extensive aims including corrosion control, exterior appearance, abrasion resistance, electrical insulation and electrical conductivity of substrate materials by generating a protective surface using electrical, physical and chemical treatment on the surface of parts made from metallic materials. Such surface modification includes plating, anodizing, chemical conversion treatment, painting, lining, coating and surface hardening; this study conducted cavitation experiment to assess improvement of durability using anodizing. In order to observe surface characteristics with applied current density, the electrolyte temperature, concentration was maintained at constant condition. To prevent hindrance of stable growth of oxide layer due to local temperature increase during the experiment, stirring was maintained at constant speed. In addition, using galvanostatic method, it was maintained at processing time of 40minutes for 10 to $30mA/cm^2$. The cavitation experiment was carried out with an ultra sonic vibratory apparatus using piezo-electric effect with modified ASTM-G32. The peak-to-peak amplitude was $30{\mu}m$ and the distance between the horn tip and specimen was 1mm. The specimen after the experiment was cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, dried in a vacuum oven for more than 24 hours, and weighed with an electric balance. The surface damage morphology was observed with 3D analysis microscope. As a result of the study, differences were observed surface hardness and anti-cavitation characteristics depending on the development of oxide film with the anodizing process time.

  • Anodizing is a technology to generate thicker and high-quality films than natural oxide films by treating metals via electrochemical methods. It is a technique to develop metals for various uses, and extensive research on the commercial use has been performed for a long time. Aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) is generate oxide films, whose sizes and characteristics depending on the types of electrolytes, voltages, temperatures and time. Electrochemical manufacturing method of nano structure is an efficient technology in terms of cost reduction, high productivity and complicated shapes, which receives the spotlight in diverse areas. The sulfuric acid was used as an anodizing electrolyte, controlling its temperature to $10^{\circ}C$. The anode was 5083 Al alloy with dimension of $5(t){\times}20{\times}20mm$ while the cathode was the platinum. The distance between the anode and the cathode was maintained at 3 cm. Agitation was introduced by magnetic stirrer at 300 rpm to prevent localized temperature rise that hinders stable growth of oxide layer. In order to observe surface characteristics with applied current density, the electrolyte temperature, concentration was maintained at constant condition for $10^{\circ}C$, 10 vol.%, respectively. To prevent hindrance of stable growth of oxide layer due to local temperature increase during the experiment, stirring was maintained at constant rate. In addition, using galvanostatic method, it was maintained at current density of $10{\sim}30mA/cm^2$ for 40 minutes. The cavitation experiment was carried out with an ultrasonic vibratory apparatus using piezo-electric effect with modified ASTM-G32. The peak-to-peak amplitude was $30{\mu}m$ and the distance between the horn tip and specimen was 1 mm. • We propose a simple method to control the crystallization depth of amorphous silicon (a-Si) deposited by PECVD or LPCVD during the excimer laser annealing (ELA). Employing the new method, we have formed poly-Si/a-Si double film and fabricated a new poly-Si TFT with vertical a-Si offsets between the poly-Si channel and the source/drain of TFT without any additional photo-lithography process. The maximum leakage current of the new poly-Si TFT decreased about 80% due to the highly resistive vertical a-Si offsets which reduce the peak electric field in drain depletion region and suppress electron-hole pair generation. In ON state, current flows spreading down through broad a-Si cross-section in the vertical a-Si offsets and the current density in the drain depletion region where large electric field is applied is reduced. The stability of poly-Si TFT has been improved noticeably by suppressing trap state generation in drain region which is caused by high current density and large electric field. For example, ON current of the new TFT decreased only 7% at a stress condition where ON current of conventional TFT decreased 89%.

  • In resonant tunneling diodes with the quantum well structure showing the negative differential resistance (NDR), it is essential to increase both the peak-to-valley current ratio (PVCR) and the peak current density ($J_p$) for the accurate switching operation and the high output of the device. In this work, a resonant interband tunneling diode (RITD) with single quantum well structure, which is composed of $In_{0.53}Ga_{0.47}As/ln_{0.52}Al_{0.48}As$ heterojunction on the InP substrate, is suggested to improve the PVCR and $J_p$ through the narrowed tunnel barriers. As the result, the measured I-V curves showed the PVCR over 60.

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the corrosion characteristics of five dental amalgams(CAULK FINE CUT, OPTALLOY II, DISPERSALLOY, TYTIN, and VALIANT) in the solutions with fluoride compound through the anodic polarization curve obtained by using a potentiostat. After each amalgam alloy and Hg being triturated, the triturated mass was inserted into the cylindrical metal mold, and condensed by hydraulic pressure(160 kg/$cm^2$). Each specimen was removed from the metal mold. Specimens were polished with the silicone carbide grinding paper 24 hours after condensation and stored at room temperature for 1 week. The anodic polarization curves were employed to compare the corrosion behaviours of the amalgams in 0.9 % saline solution and in the saline solutions with 2.2 ppm, 0.05 %, 2 % NaF, and 8 % $SnF_2$ at $37^{\circ}C$ with 3-electrode potentiostat. After the immersion of specimen in electrolyte for 30 minutes, the potential scan was begun. The potential scan range was -1500m V to + 800m V(vs. S.C.E.) in the working electrode and the scan rate was 50 mV/sec. The results were as follows, 1. The corrosion potential, the potential of anodic current peak, and transpassive potential in the saline solutions with NaF shifted to lower direction than those in normal saline solution, and the current density in the saline solutions with NaF was higher than that in normal saline solution. The differences were increased as the concentrations of NaF became higher. 2. The corrosion potential and transpassive potential in the saline solution with $SnF_2$ shifted to higher direction than those in normal saline solution, and the current density in the saline solution with $SnF_2$ was higher than that in normal saline solution after the corrosion potential. The anodic polarization curves in the saline solution with $SnF_2$ had no outstanding anodic current peak. 3. The corrosion potentials for high-copper amalgams were much higher than those for CAULK FINE CUT and OPTALLOY II in normal saline solution, but, as the concentrations of fluoride compound became higher, the differences in corrosion potentials between them were decreased. The corrosion potentials had the similarity in the saline solution with 2% NaF or 8% $SnF_2$. 4. The current density for TYTIN was the lowest among the others in normal saline solution and in the saline solution with 2.2 ppm or 0.05 % NaF. 5. There was no significant difference in current density between Pd-enriched VALIANT and other high-copper amalgams.

  • The high-velocity electromagnetic forming (EMF) process is based on the Lorentz force and the energy of the magnetic field. The advantages of EMF include improved formability, wrinkle reduction, and non-contact forming. In this study, numerical simulations were conducted to determine the practical parameters for the EMF process. A 2-D axis-symmetric electromagnetic model was used, based on a spiral-type forming coil. In the numerical simulation, an RLC circuit was coupled to the spiral coil to measure various design parameters, such as the system input current and the electromagnetic force. The simulation results show that even though the input peak current levels were at the same level in each case, the forming condition varied due to differences in the frequency of the input current. Thus, the electromagnetic forming force was affected by the input current frequency, which in turn, determined the magnitude of the current density and the magnetic flux density.

  • In order to study the AC driving mechanism for OLED lighting, the fluorescent OLEDs were fabricated and the electroluminescent characteristics of the OLEDs by AC forward bias were analyzed. In the case of the driving method of OLED by AC forward bias under the same voltage and the same current density, degradation of luminescent characteristics for elapsed time progressed faster than in the case of the driving method by DC bias. These phenomena were caused by the peak voltage of AC forward bias which is ${\sqrt{2}}$ times higher than the DC voltage. In addition, the degradation of the OLED was accelerated because the AC forward bias had come close to the upper limit of the allowable voltage range even though the peak voltage didn't exceed the allowable range of the OLED. However, the fabricated fluorescent OLED showed little degradation of OLED characteristics due to AC forward bias from 0 V to 6.04 V. Therefore, OLED lighting by AC driving will become commercialized if sufficient luminance is realized at a voltage at which the characteristics of the OLED are not degradation by the AC driving method.

  • We prepared polythiophene and poly(3-methylthiophene) films, known as conducting polymer, by electrochemical method. Polythiophene and poly(3-methylthiophene) films were doped and undoped dopant for the studing the understanding of doping mechanism and possible application to the color change switch. We observed that the anodic, cathodic wave and absorption spectra were slightly changed during doping and undoping process in polythiophene. It shows that doping and undoping process were showed some difference by the appearance and disappearance of polaron and bi-polaron. In the relation of the peak of oxidative current density and potential sweep rate of cyclic voltammograms, the amount of dopant in polythiophene film was homogeneously increased at low scan rate. This also can be applied to the poly(3-methlythiophene).
