The effect of water quality improvement of combined sewage by detention pond has been studied. It is convinced that the pollutant load and peak flow through the combined sewer by first rainfall and runoff can be decreased by detention pond sited at the outlet of small basin. Hydraulic modeling of detention panel was performed for two cases of sedimentation pond and gravel contact pond. It has been recognized that it is more efficient to reduce the pollutant of combined sewage when the combined sewage is released alter a fixed detention time in the detention pond than it is released continuously without detention time. The gravel contact detention pond shows higher pollutant removal rate than the sedimentation detention pond in all pollutants. When it comes to gravel contact detention pond, the gravel pond filled with crushed gravel has a higher pollutant removal rate than that filled with river gravel.

In this research, enhanced land-cover classification methods using high-resolution satellite image (HRSI) and GIS in terms of practicality and accuracy was proposed. It aims for understanding non-point pollutant origin/loading, assessment the efficiency of rainfall storage/infiltration facilities and sounds water-environment management. The result of applying enhanced land-cover classification methods to the urban region verifies that roof and road area are including various vegetations such as roof garden, flower bed in the median strip and street tree. This accounts for 3% of total study area, and more importantly it was counted as impervious area by GIS alone or conventional indoor work. The feasibility of the method was assessed by applying to rainfall-runoff analysis for three weak rainfall in the range of 7.1-10.5 mm events in 2000, Chiba, Japan. A good agreement between simulated and observed runoff hydrograph was obtained. In comparison, the hydrograph simulated with land-use parameters by the detailed land-use information of 10m grid had an error between 31%~71%, while enhanced method showed 4% to 29%, and showed the improvement particularly for reproducing observed peak and recession flow rate of hydrograph in weak rainfall condition.

This study is to evaluate the applicability of SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model for multi-purpose dams and multi-function weirs operation in Namhan river basin ($12,577km^2$) of South Korea. The SWAT was calibrated (2005 ~ 2009) and validated (2010 ~ 2014) considering of 4 multi-purpose dams and 3 multi-function weirs using daily observed dam inflow and storage, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and groundwater level data. Firstly, the dam inflow was calibrated by the five steps; (step 1) the physical rate between total runoff and evapotranspiration was controlled by ESCO, (step 2) the peak runoff was calibrated by CN, OV_N, and CH_N, (step 3) the baseflow was calibrated by GW_DELAY, (step 4) the recession curve of baseflow was calibrated by ALPHA_BF, (step 5) the flux between lateral flow and return flow was controlled by SOL_AWC and SOL_K, and (step 6) the flux between reevaporation and return flow was controlled by REVAPMN and GW_REVAP. Secondly, for the storage water level calibration, the SWAT emergency and principle spillway were applied for water level from design flood level to restricted water level for dam and from maximum to management water level for weir respectively. Finally, the parameters for evapotranspiration (ESCO), soil water (SOL_AWC) and groundwater level fluctuation (GWQMN, ALPHA_BF) were repeatedly adjusted by trial error method. For the dam inflow, the determination coefficient $R^2$ was above 0.80. The average Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) was from 0.59 to 0.88 and the RMSE was from 3.3 mm/day to 8.6 mm/day respectively. For the water balance performance, the PBIAS was between 9.4 and 21.4 %. For the dam storage volume, the $R^2$ was above 0.63 and the PBIAS was between 6.3 and 13.5 % respectively. The average $R^2$ for evapotranspiration and soil moisture at CM (Cheongmicheon) site was 0.72 and 0.78, and the average $R^2$ for groundwater level was 0.59 and 0.60 at 2 YP (Yangpyeong) sites.
In Korea, nonpoint pollutants have a significant effect on rivers' water quality, and they are discharged in very different ways depending on rainfall events. Therefore, preparing an optimal countermeasure against nonpoint pollutants requires much monitoring. The present study was conducted to help prepare a method for installing an automatic nonpoint pollutant measurement system for the cost-effective monitoring of the effect of nonpoint pollutants on rivers. In the present study, monitoring was performed at six sites of a river passing through an urban area with a basin area of $454.3km^2$. The results showed that monitoring could be performed for a relatively long time interval in the upstream and downstream regions, which are mainly comprised of forests, regardless of the rainfall amount. On the contrary, in the urban region, the monitoring had to be performed at a relatively short time interval each time when the rainfall intensity changed. This was because the flow rate was significantly dependent on the rainfall's intensity. The appropriate sites for installing an automatic measurement system were found to be a site before entering the urban region, a site after passing through the urban region, and the end of a river where the effects of nonpoint pollutant sources can be well-decided. The analysis also showed that the monitoring time should be longer for the rainfall events of a higher rainfall class and for the sites closer to the river end. This is because the rainfall runoff has a longer effect on the river. However, the effect of nonpoint pollutant sources was not significantly different between the upstream and the downstream in the cases of rainfall events over 100 mm.

It reflects well feature of slope that is characteristic of urban river basin of Busan local. In this study, process various hydrological data and basin details data which is collected through basin basis data, hydrological monitoring system(EMS-DEU) and automatic water level equipment(AWS-DEU) for urban flood disaster prevention and use as basin input data of ILLUDAS, SWMM and HEC-HMS in order to examine outflow feature of experiment basin and then use in reservoir design of experiment basin through calibration and verification about HEC-HMS. Inserted design rainfall for 30 years that is design criteria of creek into HEC-HMS and then calculated design floods according to change aspect of the impermeable rate. Capacity of reservoir was determined on the outflow mass curve. Designed detention pond(volume $54,000m^3$) at last outlet upper stream of experiment basin, after designing reservoir. It could be confirmed that the peak flow was reduced resulting from examining outflow aspect. Designing reservoir must decrease outflow of urban areas.

We investigate the influence of spatial rainfall distribution on hillslope soil erosion through laboratory experiments. Two distinct spatial distributions are examined in this study, i.e., rainfall concentrated on central area versus upper area of hillslope. During the entire period of 8 hours for each experiment, direct runoff, subsurface flow, and sediment yield are measured at high temporal resolution (10 minutes). Compared to the case that rainfalll concentrated on central area, upstream concentrated rainfall results in lower peak of the sediment yield curve while greater cumulative sediment yield. Cumulative sediment yield increases over time linearly but its growth rate shows a sudden decrease at around 2 hours. This should be taken into consideration when temporal variability of sediment yield is estimated from observed total amount, and demonstrates the necessity of measuring sediment yield at high temporal resolution.

In recent years, flood due to the consecutive storm events have been occurred and property damage and casualties are in increasing trend. This study calls the consecutively occurred storm events as a mega rainfall scenario and the discharge by the scenario is defined as a mega flood discharge. A mega rainfall scenario was created on the assumption that 100-year frequency rainfall events were consecutively occurred in the Gyeongancheon stream basin. The SSARR (Streamflow Synthesis and Reservoir Regulation) model was used to estimate the mega flood discharge using the scenario in the basin. In addition, in order to perform more reasonable runoff analysis, the parameters were estimated using the SCE_UA algorithm. Also, the calibration and verification were performed using the objective functions of the weighted sum of squared of residual(WSSR), which is advantageous for the peak discharge simulation and sum of squared of residual(SSR). As a result, the mega flood discharge due to the continuous occurrence of 100-year frequency rainfall events in the Gyeongan Stream Basin was estimated to be 4,802㎥/s, and the flood discharge due to the 100-year frequency single rainfall event estimated by "the Master Plan for the Gyeongancheon Stream Improvement" (2011) was 3,810㎥/s. Therefore, the mega flood discharge was found to increase about 992㎥/s more than the single flood event. The results of this study can be used as a basic data for Comprehensive Flood Control Plan of the Gyeongan Stream basin.
For the design of hydraulic structures, the design flood discharge corresponding to a specific frequency is generally used by using the design storm calculated according to the rainfall-runoff relationship. In the past, empirical equations such as rational equations were used to calculate the peak flow rate. However, as the duration of rainfall is prolonged, the outflow patterns are different from the actual events, so the accuracy of the temporal distribution of the probability rainfall becomes important. In the present work, Huff's quartile method is used for the temporal distribution of rainfall, and the third quartile is generally used. The regression equation for Huff's quadratic curve applies a sixth order polynomial equation because of its high accuracy throughout the duration of rainfall. However, in statistical modeling, the regression equation needs to be concise in accordance with the principle of simplicity, and it is necessary to determine the regression coefficient based on the statistical significance level. Therefore, in this study, the statistical significance test for regression equation for temporal distribution of the Huff's quartile method, which is used as the temporal distribution method of design rainfall, is conducted for 69 rainfall observation stations under the jurisdiction of the Korea Meteorological Administration. It is statistically significant that the regression equation of the Huff's quartile method can be considered only up to the 4th order polynomial equation, as the regression coefficient is significant in most of the 69 rainfall observation stations.

This study was conducted to investigate characteristics of nonpoint pollutant discharges and concentrations in runoff from the urban and agricultural areas in Korea. The analytical parameters used for this study were COD, BOD and SS. This study was conducted during the period from May to August 1981. Nonpoint pollutant mass loadings from the urban area were influenced by the rainfall intensity and the duration of rainfall, and etc. The concentrations of pollutants in the first flush was higher as the discharges increased. It was, however, found that the concentrations of pollutants in the heavy storm runoff were decreased due to the dilution effect. When other rainfall followed a peak rainfall, the concentrations of pollutants were lower than expected, because the first flush conveyed the most of pollutants deposited on the combined sewers. However the concentrations were increased in proportion to the increased flow when a rainfall of higher intensity than the first flush was continued. Yearly area yield rates in kg/ha were estimated to be 690.5(489.9~1,328) of COD, 319.7(226.8~614.8) of BOD, and 831.2(589.7~1,598) of SS. Pollutant sources in agricultural area were of the domestic waste water, manure composting stack, and agricultural solid wastes and etc. In the paddy field, yearly area yield rates in kg/ha were estimated to be 623.4(21.7~114) of COD, 18.65(9.53~34.5) of BOD, and 91.9(46.3~171.8) of SS. In the crop land, however, yearly rates in kg/ha were estimated to be 91.9(46.3~171.8) of COD, 23.09(11.7~42.5) of BOD, and 23.09(11.4~43.4) of SS. Pollutant sources in the feedlot area were originating from the feces of cattle, the cleaning water, the wastes spilled from manure composting stack during rain. Yearly area yield rate in kg/ha was estimated to be 3.804(2,489~6,658) of COD, 2.047(464~2,900) of BOD, and 1.149 (729~1,442) of SS. Pollutant discharges in the forest area were resulted from the organic layer like leaves and others deposited on the surface. Yearly area yield rate in kg/ha was estimated to be 9.86(5.45~18.56) of COD, 3.48(1.67~7.54) of BOD, and 4.64(9.74~10.35) of SS.
