The catalytic oxidation of benzene, toluene and xylene over a spent industrial catalyst (Pd-based) was investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor system. According to the priming condition, the properties of a spent Pd-based catalyst were characterized by XRD(X-ray diffraction). BET(Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) and ICP(Inductively coupled plasma). When air was used as a primer, optimum priming temperature was found to be 200$^{\circ}C$, and the catalytic activity decreased as the priming temperature increased. When a spent Pd-based catalyst primed with air at 200$^{\circ}C$ was re-treated with hydrogen at 200$^{\circ}C$, 300$^{\circ}C$ or 400$^{\circ}C$, respectively, the catalytic activity increased and thermal effect were negligible. $HNO_3$ aqueous solution priming resulted in slight decrease of the catalytic activity, with little effects on $HNO_3$ concentrations. The activity of a spent Pd-based catalyst with respect to VOC molecule was observed to follow sequence: xylene> toluene> benzene. Benzene. toluene and xylene could be removed to almost 100% by a spent Pd-based catalyst primed with hydrogen.

A flammable gas sensor based on the $SnO_2$thin film deposited by the reactive ion assisted deposition was fabricated and ultra-thin Pd layer as catalyst was adsorbed at surface by ion beam sputtering. The initial oxidation states of Pd catalyst were controlled to investigate the role of Pd in the sensing process of inflammale gas sensor through annealing in air and vacuum respectively. The Pd catalyst existing in pure metallic state showed the sensitivity higher than that of PdO. The result might be closely related to the fact that PdO as a surface acceptor would receive electrons via Pd sub-channel from $SnO_2$, and thus which reduces the sensitivity and delay the response time.

In this study, electrochemical characterizations of PdCu/C catalysts that are synthesized by modified polyol method are investigated. Most of all, amount of ethylene glycol (EG) that is used as main component for catalyst synthesis is mainly modulated to optimize synthetic condition of the PdCu/C catalyst, For evaluations about catalytic activity and performance of direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC), half cell and full cell tests are implemented. As a result, when amount of EG is 4M, catalytic activities of the PdCu/C catalyst such as peak current of formic acid oxidation and active surface area are best, while maximum power density of DFAFC using the optimized PdCu/C catalyst is better than that using commercial Pd/C (30 wt%) by 6%. Based on that, PdCu/C catalyst synthesized by modified polyol method plays a critical role in improving (i) catalytic activity for formic acid oxidation and (ii) DFAFC performance by employing as anodic catalyst.
The late transition Pd catalyst of low oxophilicity that has ferrocene -based diimine ligand for stabilization of center metal had been synthesized and applied for the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). In the presence of triisobutylaluminium (TIBA) for impurity scavenger, the effects of polymerization temperature and [TIBA]/[Pd] mole ratio on the yield and glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of PMMA had been examined. For 40~$50^{\circ}C$ of polymerization temperature and 2000~3000 of [TIBA]/[Pd] mole ratio, higher polymer yields were obtained. It was observed that ($T_g$) of PMMA is almost independent to the polymerization temperature but influenced by the [TIBA]/[Pd] mole ratio. With the examination of($T_g$) of PMMA with the structure of polymer, it had been found that T$_{g}$ of PMMA exhibits a linear relationship with the isotacticity of polymer.r.
The catalytic activity of precious metals(Rh, Pd, Pt) and nickel catalysts supported on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3\;and\;CeO_2$ in the partial combustion of methane(PCM) to syngas was investigated based on the product distribution in a fixed bed now reactor under atmospheric condition and also on analysis results by SEM, XPS, TPD, BET, and XRD. The activity of the catalysts based on the syngas yield increased in the sequence $Rh(5)/CeO_2{\geq}Ni(5)/CeO_2>>Rh(5)/Al_2O_3>Pd(5)/Al_2O_3>Ni(5)/Al_2O_3$. Compared to the precious catalysts, the syngas yield and stability of the $Ni(5)/CeO_2$ catalyst were almost similar to $(5)/CeO_2$ catalyst, and superior to these of any other catalysts. The syngas yield of $Ni(5)/CeO_2$ catalyst was 90.66% at 1023 K. It could be suggested to be the redox cycle of the successive reaction and formation of active site, $Ni^{2-}$ and the lattice oxygen, $O^{2-}$ produced due to reduction of $Ce^{4-}$ to $Ce^{3-}$.

To enhance catalyst activity of the palladium (Pd) towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), iridium (Ir) and yttrium (Y) were alloyed by polyol method. Due to the low reduction potential of Y, it is hard to reduce Y ion completely by polyol method. In XPS spectra, the binding energy of the Pd is shifted to a lower value, which indicates the d-electron of Pd is filled by the electron from the Y. And other phases of Y are observed by the XPS. Among the catalysts, the $Pd_4IrY_{0.1}/C$ showed the best activity towards ORR, which indicates the metallic Y is effective for improving the catalytic activity. Thus, for further enhancing ORR activity, the novel method for complete reduction of Y is needed.

The cell performance of direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) having catalysts coated by electrospray was analyzed. Pd catalyst was used for the anode electrode and Pd catalyst loading amount and formic acid feed rate dependances of fuel cell performance were evaluated. When loading amount of Pd is in between 3mg/$cm^2$ and 7mg/$cm^2$ and formic acid feed rate is 5ml/min., 3mg/$cm^2$ sample showed better potential at 129 mA/$cm^2$ and power density due to difference in mass transfer limitation. However, when the feed rate is greater than 10ml/min., the opposite tendency was observed between 3mg/$cm^2$ and 7mg/$cm^2$ samples. The result was attributed to improvement in electrochemical reaction of the Pd. Based on the above results, In DFAFC including Pd catalyst that was coated by electrospray, 0.537V as the maximum potential at 129 mA/$cm^2$ was attained.
Mesoporous alumina was synthesized using bayberry tannin (BT) as template. This novel synthesis strategy was based on a precipitation method associated with aluminum nitrate as the source of aluminum in an aqueous system. $N_2$ adsorption/desorption, XRD, SEM and TEM were used to characterize the as-prepared mesoporous alumina. The results showed that the mesoporous alumina possessed crystalline pore wall, high specific surface area, narrow pore distribution and excellent thermal stability. Moreover, the surface area and pore size of the mesoporous alumina can be tuned by changing the experimental parameters. Further, the mesoporous alumina was investigated as the support of palladium catalyst ($Pd-Al_2O_3{^*}$) for the hydrogenation of propenyl, styrene and linoleic acid. For comparison, the reference catalyst ($Pd-Al_2O_3$) prepared without barberry tannin was also employed for the catalytic hydrogenation. The experimental results showed that $Pd-Al_2O_3{^*}$ exhibited the superior catalytic performance than $Pd-Al_2O_3$ for all the investigated substrates, especially for the hydrogenation of linoleic acid with larger molecular.
A series of Pd-based catalysts were prepared and examined for the amination of 2,6-dimethylphenol in a fixedbed reactor. The best results were obtained for Pd/$Al_2O_3$-BaO with a conversion of 99.89% and a selectivity of 91.16%. These catalysts were characterized using BET, XRD, XPS, TEM and $NH_3$-TPD. Doped BaO not only improved the dispersion of the Pd particles but also decreased the acidity of the catalyst, which remarkably enhanced the selectivity and stability of the catalyst. The generality of Pd/$Al_2O_3$-BaO for this kind of reaction was demonstrated by catalytic aminations of o- and p-alkyl phenols.
An AlGaN/GaN heterojunction-based hydrogen sensor with SnO2 nanoparticles/Pd catalyst layer was fabricated for room-temperature hydrogen detection. The fabricated sensor exhibited unstable drift in standby current when it was operated at room temperature. The instability in the sensing signal was dramatically improved when the sensor was operated under UV illumination.
