  • Liquid chromatographic behavior of Pd(II), Ni(II) and Co(III) in N-Alkylisonitrosoacetylacetone imine(HIAA-NR) chelates was investigated by reversed phase high perfomance liquid chromatography. The optimum conditions for the separation of IAA-NR-metal chelates were examined respect to the flow rate and mobile phase strength. The metal-N-Alkylisonitrosoacetylacetone imine chelates in solution were successfully separated on Novapak $C_{18}$ column using acetonitrile/water mixture as mobile phase. The elution order of chelates is methyl>ethyl>propyl>butyl as N-alkyl group for ligand is varied. It was found that all IAA-NR-metal chelates were eluted in an acceptable range of capacity factor value($0{\leq}log\;k^{\prime}{\leq}1$). The dependence of log k' on the volume fraction of water in the binary mobile phase was examined. Also, the dependence of k' on the liquid-liquid extraction distribution ratio(Dc) in acetonitrile-water-alkane extraction system was investigated for IAA-NR-metal chelate. Both kinds of dependence are linear, which suggests that the retention of the electroneutral metal chelates on Novapak $C_{18}$ column is largely due to the hydrophobic effect.

  • Objective : Subthalamic nucleus (STN) deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment of choice for patients with advanced idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) who have motor complication with medication. The objectives of this study are to analyze long-term follow-up data of STN DBS cases and to identify the factors related to outcomes. Methods : Fifty-two PD patients who underwent STN DBS were followed-up for more than 3 years. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and other clinical profiles were assessed preoperatively and during follow-up. A linear regression model was used to analyze whether factors predict the results of STN DBS. We divided the study individuals into subgroups according to several factors and compared subgroups. Results : Preoperative activity of daily living (ADL) and the magnitude of preoperative levodopa response were shown to predict the improvement in UPDRS part II without medication, and preoperative ADL and levodopa equivalent dose (LED) were shown to predict the improvement in UPDRS part II with medication. In UPDRS part III with medication, the magnitude of preoperative levodopa response was a predicting factor. Conclusion : The intensity of preoperative levodopa response was a strong factor for motor outcome. And preoperative ADL and LED were strong factors for ADL improvement. More vigorous studies should be conducted to elucidate how levodopa-induced motor complications are ameliorated after STN DBS.

  • The $SF_{6}$ gas insulated power equipments have the insulation systems which are composed of $SF_{6}$ gas and insulation paper. It is repored that their insulation abilities are influenced by the $SF_{6}$ gas gaps in those insulation systems and gas pressures. This paper describes partial discharge phenomena with $SF_{6}$ gas pressures in insulation system of $SF_{6}$ gas-insulation paper Specimens of $SF_{6}$ gas-insulation paper were prepared and aramid paper was used as insulation paper. Partial discharge inception voltages(PDIV) and breakdown voltages for the existence of $SF_{6}$ gas gaps were measured by short term tests with gas pressures. Also, average PD quantities and pulse counts, life times of each specimens were calculated from the results of long term aging tests with gas pressures. It was found that the $SF_{6}$ gas gaps decrease increasing rates of PDIV and brealdown voltages according to gas pressure increase and the insulation breakdown caused by the smaller PD quantities than 1[pC] at the high gas pressure of 300kPa is due to the increase of energy density with increase of gas pressure.

  • From January 1, 2008 to March 31, 2010, 101 patients with stage II-III breast cancer were enrolled in this study and subjected to an anthracycline-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy regimen with or without docetaxel. Surgery was performed after 2-6 cycles of chemotherapy, and the clinical response was determined by pathological and histochemical assessments. The clinical response rate, as indicated by complete response (CR), partial response (PR), stable disease (SD), and progressive disease (PD), were 6.9, 52.5, 36.6, and 4.0%, respectively. A multivariable correlation analysis indicated that the overall clinical response rate correlated with the number of metastatic lymph nodes, number of chemotherapy cycles, and vessel invasion status. Importantly, the CR rate was only associated with the number of chemotherapy cycles. Nonparametric tests failed to detect a correlation between HER2 or Topo $II{\alpha}$ status and clinical response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in these patients. When they were stratified by HER2 or HR status, for HER2-positive patients the CR rate was associated with vessel invasion and Topo $II{\alpha}$ status. Based on our findings, we propose that HR, HER-2 and Topo $II{\alpha}$ are not putative predictive biomarkers of chemotherapy outcome for breast cancer patients. Topo $II{\alpha}$ expression level was only inversely correlated with CR rate among HR-positive patients. Importantly, the achievement of CR was largely related to the number of chemotherapy cycles.

  • Crystal structure of bis(1,2-diaminopropane)palladium(II) bis(oxalato)palladate(II) has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystal data: $Pd_2C_{10}H_{10}N_{4}O_{8}$, $M_W$ = 573.09, orthorhombic, space group $P_{ccn}$ (No = 56), a = 16.178(5), b = 16.381(6), c = 6.685(2)$\{AA}$, V = 1771.6 $\{AA}^3$, $M_W$W = 573.09, $D_c$ = 2.014 g${\cdot}c\;m^{-3}$, Z = 4, T = 294K, F(000) = 1056.0 and $\mu$ = 20.466 c$m^{-1}$. The intensity data were collected with $Mo-K\alpha$ radiation (${\lambda}$ = 0.7107 $\AA)$ on an automatic four-circle diffractometer with a graphite monochromater. The structure was solved by Patterson method and refined by full matrix least-squares methods using Pivot weights. The final R and S values were R = 0.065, $R_W = 0.059, R_{all}$ = 0.065 and S = 4.315 for 605 observed reflections. Both cation and anion complexes are essentially planar and have dihedral angle of $18(l)^{\circ}$ between thier planes. In the crystal structure, they do not have the Magnus's salt type mixed stacks; instead, the complex anions form regular stacks along the c-axis with the M-M bond length of $3.343(5)\AA$ and their stacks are surrounded by the complex cations through hydrogen bonds with the nitrogen-oxygen distances of 2.94(3) and $3.31(4)\AA.$

  • This paper described the measurement technology to analyze the partial discharge characteristics for long term aging of insulations. This system was consisted of high voltage generation and measurement part, PD detection part, digital conversion and signal processing part. We used the VXI system for digital conversion and signal processing part. In the digital conversion part, we studied the error of partial discharge magnitude and memory capacity for reading digital signal with the sampling rate. In the signal processing part, we showed the program algorithm to count pulses and read peak values of partial discharge. The allowable minimum sampling rate of digizer was decided to 250kS/s through analyzing test. We confirmed that this system was very useful in the study of $\phi-q-n$ characteristics of long term PD experiments with specimens being consisted of internal void defects and CIGRE II electrodes.

  • Two two-dimensional cyanide- and phenoxo-bridged heterometallic M(II)-Mn(III) (M = Ni, Pd) coordination polymers $\{[Mn(saltmen)]_4[Ni(CN)_4]\}(ClO_4)_2{\cdot}CH_3OH{\cdot}H_2O$ (1) and $\{[Mn(saltmen)]_4[Pd(CN)_4]\}(ClO_4)_2{\cdot}CH_3CN{\cdot}H_2O$ (2) ($saltmen^{2-}$ = N,N'-(1,1,2,2-tetramethylethylene)bis(salicylideneaminato)dianion) have been obtained by using $K_2[M(CN)_4]$ as building blocks and a salen-tpye Schiff-base manganese(III) compound as assembling segment. Single X-ray analysis reveals their isostrutural cyanide-bridged $MMn_4$ pentanuclear cationic structure. The four Schiff base manganese units of the pentanuclear entity are self-complementary through the phenoxo oxygen atoms from the neighboring complex, therefore forming cyanide- and phenoxo-bridged 2D sheet-like structure. Investigation over magnetic susceptibilities reveals the overall ferromagnetic coupling between the adjacent Mn(III) ions bridged by the phenoxo oxygen atoms with J = 2.13 and $2.21cm^{-1}$ for complexes 1 and 2, respectively.

  • In the polycondensation reaction of polyethyleneterephthalate(PET), $Sb_2$$O_3$, can react effectively as a catalyst, if physically transformed. $Sb_2$$O_3$ powder is transformed into liquid solution by dissolving in ethylene glycol(EG). Homogeneous catalyst is made by mixing this liquid solution with glycols having different solubility. The efficient reaction of PET polymerization is expected by using homogeneous catalyst. PET was synthesized using homogeneous catalysts of 4 wt.% $Sb_2$$O_3$ solution dissolved in glycol[EG, 2,2-bis(4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenol)propane(BHPP), neopentyl glycol(NPO), and 1,3-propandiol(PD)]. PET using EG-BHPP($Sb_2$$O_3$) catalysts shows the highest I.V. within a reaction time of 120 min. In the p-d analysis, PET using EG-BHPP($Sb_2$$O_3$) catalysts has the fastest propagation rate and slowest degradation rate. EG-BHPP($Sb_2$$O_3$) catalysts are more efficient than EG($Sb_2$$O_3$) catalysts and $Sb_2$$O_3$ powder catalysts.

  • The pilot study was conducted to (i) investigate the ability of various membrane integrity monitoring methods to detect changes in membrane integrity during operation, and (ii) determine the impact of membrane damage on microbial removal by microfiltration. Two variations of air pressure hold tests were investigated for direct integrity monitoring: pressure decay (PD) and diffusive air flow (DAF) tests which are most commonly used integrity tests for microfiltration (MF) membranes. Both PD and DAF tests were sensitive enough to detect one damaged fiber out of 66,000 under field operaing conditions. Indirect integrity monitoring such as turbidity and particle counting, however, responded poorly to defects in membrane systems. Microbial challenge study was performed using both new and deliberately damaged membranes, as well as varying the state of fouling of the membrane. This study demonstrated that MF membrane with nominal pore size $0.2{\mu}m$ was capable of removing various pathogens including coliform, spore, and cryptosporidium, at the level required by drinking water regulations, even when high operating pressures were applied. A sharp decrease in average log reduction value (LRV) was observed when one fiber was damaged, emphasizing the importance of membrane integrity in control of microbial contamination.

  • Formation of the monodisperse submicrospheres consisting of ionic palladium(II) complexes, $[(Me_4en)Pd(L)]_2(X)_4$($Me_4en$ = N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine; L = bis(4-(4-pyridylcarboxyl)phenyl)methane; $X^-=BF_4{^-}$ and $ClO_4{^-}$), has been carried out without any templates or additives. The submicrospheres were coated with silicates, and then calcined in air at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, to efficiently form hollow-spherical $SiO_2$ submicro-reactors dotted with palladium(0) nanoparticles (PdNPs). That is, the submicrospheres act as both a template and a source of the palladium metal nanoparticles. The submicro-reactors containing nano-catalysts have been characterized by means of SEM, TEM, and XPS. Notably, the reactors were proved to be very effective for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and hydrogenation reactions.
