The Pb-Ag-Bi-S system minerals such as galena-matildite solid solutions, cosalite and heyrovskyite occur in the Nakdong As-Bi deposits. Galena-matildite solid solutions commonly coexisting with native bismuth fill in microfractures of pyrite grains and form irregular shapes. Cosalite forms composite grains including native bismuth, heyrovskyite and Bi-Te-S system minerals in the matrix of quartz vein. Matildite from the Nakdong deposits has an end member composition, $Ag_{1.07-1.11}Bi_{1.12-1.20}S_2$, and an excess concentration of $0.3{\sim}2.4$ mole % $Bi_2S_3$ compared to the stoichiomeoic value. PbS concentrations in $PbS-AgBiS_2$ solid solutions do not exceed 54 mole %. The average chemical composition of cosalite in the study area is $Pb_{1.79}Bi_{2.29}Ag_{0.12}S_5$. Pb is slightly depleted compared to the ideal composition, but the concentrations of Ag and Cu reach as much as 1.47 wt.% and 0.27 wt.%, respectively. Heyrovskyite has the chemical formula of $Pb_{5.01}Ag_{0.26}Bi_{2.70}S_9$ suggesting that there occurs the coupled substitution of $2Bi^{3+}$ for $3Pb^{2+}$ as well as that of $Ag^++Bi^{3+}$ for $2Pb^{2+}$. The genetic condition of Pb-Ag-Bi-S system minerals can be confined to the temperature of $220{\sim}270^{\circ}C$ and the pressure below 200 bars.
This study was carried out to investigate the lead-bismuth-sodium ternary system which a basis of the Dittmer method as a part of "the fundamental study of pyrometallurgical debismuthizing of lead". Thermodynamic properties of each liquid Pb-Bi, Pb-Na binaries as well as liquid Pb-Bi-Na ternary solution were measured by e.m.f. of these concentration cells, and those of each component were also determined. Furthermore, iso-activity lines including Pb rich side composition of Pb-Bi-Na ternary solution were determined. The relationship between those thermodynamic characteristics and tendency of intermetallic compound formation was discussed through the above experiments.
In this study, behaviors of removing Sb and Pb by oxidation of molten Bi-Pb-Sb alloy which is a by-product of non-ferrous smelting process was investigated. The molten alloy was oxidized at 1173 K by bubbling $N_2+O_2$ gas through a submerged nozzle. The Sb was removed and recovered as mixed phase of $Sb_2O_3$ and metal Sb. In the case of bubbling $N_2+O_2$ gas into molten Bi-Pb alloy at 923 K, Pb was oxidized and removed to slag. But Bi could not be refined due to simultaneous oxidization of Bi with Pb.
The equilibrium distribution of bismuth and lead between molten PbO-$SiO_2$ slag and bismuth phase was studied in the temperature range of $775^{\circ}C$ to $850^{\circ}C$ in a MgO crucible. The oxygen partial pressure of atmosphere was controlled by $P_{CO2}/P_{CO}$ ratio. The value of $(%PbO)_{slag}/[%Pb]_{metal}$ increased with increasing $SiO_2$ content of slag, and the value of $(%Bi_2O_3)_{slag}/[%Bi]_{metal}$ decreased with increasing $SiO_2$ content of slag. The concentration of Pb in metal increased with increasing temperature. These experimental results agreed well with the thermodynamic prediction.
As a part of "the Fundamental Study of Pyrometallurgical Debismuthizing of Lead", the author has studied liquid Pb-Bi, Pb-Na, Bi-Na binaries and Pb-Bi-Na ternary including Pb rich side composition which forms a basis of the Dittmer method. In this study, debismuthizing mechanism of the Dittmer method pertaining to the lead rich corner of the system studied was classified by the results of thermal analysis, solubility determination of Bi and Na in liquid Pb and debismuthizing test by adding metallic sodium. For instance eutectic trough in lead rich corner of Pb-Bi-Na ternary relating to the Dittmer method was determined.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Pb-Free Sn-2%Ag-Bi solder alloys. The solder alloys used in this study is Sn-2%Ag-(3,5,7,9%) Bi It is examined that their properties such as melting range, wettability, microstructure, microhardness, and tensile property. The addition of Bi(3,5,7,9%) lowered the melting point of the solder and the melting range was 196~203$^{\circ}C$. The wettability of the solder as equal to that of Sn-37% Pb solder. The morphology of structure did not change largely by addition of Bi. But the structure of cellular dendrite of linear type displayed. The tensile strength of the solder was superior to that of Sn-37%Pb solder. But the elongation was inferior to that of Sn-37%Pb solder. The hardness of Sn-2%Ag solder was tow times and that of Sn-2%Ag-Bi solder was three times of that in Sn-37%Pb solder. But the effect of increment of Bi content did not change largely.

The phase transformation of Sn-Pb-Bi solder for photovoltaic ribbon during soldering was studied using real-time synchrotron x-ray scattering. At room temperature, Sn and Pb crystal phases in the solder existed separately. By heating to $92^{\circ}C$, a new PbBi alloy crystal phase was formed, which grew further up to $160^{\circ}C$. The Sn crystal phase first started to melt at $160^{\circ}C$, and was mostly melted at $165^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the Pb and PbBi crystal phases started to melt at $165^{\circ}C$, and were mostly melted at $170^{\circ}C$. The useful result was obtained, that the solder's melting temperature decreased from $183^{\circ}C$ to $170^{\circ}C$ by addition of a small amount of Bi atoms to the eutectic Sn62-Pb38 (wt%) solder. Our study first revealed the detailed in-situ phase transformation of Sn-Pb-Bi solder during heating to the eutectic temperature. Considering the results of peel strength and hardness, adding 1 wt% of Bi atoms to the Sn62-Pb38 (wt%) solder produced an appropriate composition.
To improve free-cutting property, fine Pb, Bi particles is necessary to be distributed evenly in Al-Cu alloy. The control of added element size and distribution are very difficult because of the physical properties of Pb, Bi. The effect of master alloy compositions on microstructure and particle distribution was investigated. The ribbon shape of Pb-50wt% Bi master alloy showed the best results. And Ti addition improved even distribution of Pb, Bi particles. Particles grown from $L_2$ phase were considered to be the Pb, Bi compound.
The next generation nuclear power reactor will use Pb-Bi as the cooling material. The steel structure materials such as HT-9 used in the reactor suffer from corrosion when they are exposed to high temperature Pb-Bi. Therefore corrosion should be prevented to use Pb-Bi as the coolant material without any safety problem. One method is to control the oxygen content in Pb-Bi. An appropriate amount of oxygen in Pb-Bi can produce a thin oxide layer on steel, and this layer protects the steel from corrosion attack. Since the required oxygen content in Pb-Bi is in the range of $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-7}$ wt%, this small oxygen content can be controlled by flowing a mixture of hydrogen gas and water vapor. The stagnant corrosion test of HT-9 samples was performed by controlling the oxygen content up to 2,000 hours. The corrosion behavior of HT-9 was analyzed at the temperatures of $500^{\circ}C$ and $650^{\circ}C$ with a reduced condition and a oxygen content of $10^{-6}$ wt%.
To tap the feasibility of exploiting the 2$^{nd}$ phases as flux-pinning centers in the (Bi,Pb)$_2Sr_2Ca_2CuO_{10}$ superconductor, the size and the distribution of the precipitates have been controlled by changing reaction temperature and time, oxygen partial pressure Po$_2$ and annealing condition. Various annealing heat treatments were also conducted on the as-received 61 filament Bi-2223 tapes with Bi$_{1.8}Pb_{0.4}Sr_2Ca_{2.2}Cu_3O_8$ starting composition and annealed specimen were analyzed with XRD, SEM, EDS and TEM.. The grain size of (Ca,Sr)$_2$(BiPb)O$_4$ or Bi$_{0.5}Pb_3Sr_2Ca_2CuO_{\delta}$ was controllable by optimizing the heat treatment condition and critical current density (J$_c$) showed dependence on the size of the 2$^{nd}$ phases.
