  • Elemental mobility during the weathering of granite in the Gwangju Hyangdeung area was investigated using ICP-MS analysis. It appeared that Al, Fe, Ti, K were lost from the profile, whereas Si, Ca, Na Mg, P and Mn were immobile during chemical weathering. In less weathered soil, large enrichment of K and Ti were found relative to Al, whereas other elements such as Si, Ca, Na, Mg and P are deplete. Fe content is constant throughout the weathered profiles. Amounts of Rb, Sr, Y, Cs, Pb, Th and U increased toward the surface. Nb, and Co have accumulated in the deepest parts of the weathered soil profile. These results agree with similar published studies. In addition, the analytical data shows that Ba and Ga increased, while Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni were relatively constant in this area. REE tend to increase in most samples, while LREEs, relative to Al, were enriched in the lower and upper saprolite. HREEs were enriched in the lower and upper saprolite.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the characteristics of alkaline protease from Aspergillus fumigatus which was isolated from soil as a superior strain for the production of the alkaline protease. The optimum temperature for enzyme activity was $50^{\circ}C$ and optimum pH was 9.0. The enzyme was stable at pH 8.0 to 10.0 and thermal inactivation was shown $30^{\circ}C$. The activity of the enzyme was increased by the addition of $Mn^{++},\;Cu^{++},\;Ba^{++},\;Mg^{++},\;$wheras it was inhibitied by $K^+,\;Fe^{+++},\;Ag^+,\;Pb^{++},\;Na^+,\;Ca^{++},\;Hg^+,\;Zn^{++}$. EDTA. 2, 4-DNP, ${\varepsilon}-amino$ caproic acid did not show inhibitory effect on the proteolytic activity of alkaline protease but P-chloromercuribenzoic acid inhibited the enzyme activity, indicating that reactive sulfhydryl group is required for the enzymatic activity. The reaction of this enzyme followed typical Michael-Menten Kinetics with the Km value of $8.33{\times}10^{-4}mole/{\ell}$ with the Vmax of $47.62{\mu}g/min$. This enzyme had stronger proteolytic activity than trypsin on substrate such as casin and hemoglibin.

  • The measurement of physicochemical properties and chemical composition of SSA(sewage sludge ash) has been carried out and the preparation of lightweight material has also been performed using SSA for reuse as building or construction materials. For this aim, lightweight material has been prepared by forming the mixture of SSA, lightweight filler and inorganic binder followed by calcination at elevated temperature and characterized in terms of density and compressive strength. The pH of fly ash was found to be slightly alkaline, pH 8.69, due to the addition of caustic soda in order to neutralize the acidic gas while the pH of bottom ash was 6.48 Heavy metal leachability based on the standard leach test was also found to be below the detection limit for Cd, Cu, Pb, As and Cr of SSA. As far as the compressive strength of lightweight material was concerned, the compressive strength of lightweight material using fly ash was higher than that of lightweight material using bottom ash.

  • Samples of water, soil, and sediment were taken from 10 streams of Andong city in Gyeongbuk province in October 2004. To assess the degree of environmental pollution for each stream site, the chemical analyses of pollutants such as T-N, T-P, COD, heavy metal, organophosphorous and organochlorine pesticides, and dioxin-like PCB congeners were implemented using the standard process tests or the U. S. EPA methods. In addition, biological assessment using insect immune biomarkers was conducted on the same environmental samples to complement the chemical assessment. Except Waya stream (T-N; 2.91 mg/L, T-P; 0.16 mg/L, COD; 14.0 mg/L) with above the environmental quality standards, the T-P and COD concentrations of 9 sites are relatively low. The contents of Pb and Cd in samples taken from each stream were much lower than environmental quality standards. However, in comparison with soil samples of other streams, several times higher concentrations of Pb and Cd were found in locations at Mi, Gilan, Yeonha, and Waya stream sites. Dementon-S-methyl, diazinon, parathion, and phenthoate compounds among organophosphorous pesticides were detected as concentrations of ppb levels, respectively, from soil samples collected in the vicinity of Gilan, Mi, Norim, and Waya stream. On the other hand, 16 organochlorine pesticides and 12 dioxin-like PCB congeners selected in this study were not found in all samples. In particular, considering significant disrupting effects of Waya stream's samples on insect immune capacity, this stream seems to be contaminated with investigated and/or univestigated pollutants in this study.

  • The sample pretreatment technique using a high pressure acid digestion bomb for the analysis of ceramic capacitor materials, such as barium titanate and PZT, was studied. When the concentrations of hydrochloric acid were varied with the addition of nitric acid or distilled water, quantitative measurements for those samples were carried out using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. From this experiment the results indicate that most of elements, such as Ba, Mn, Zn, Si, etc., aren't affected by the concentration of hydrochloric acid but Nb and Zr are very susceptable to it. It however turns out that the digestion time relatively gave little effects on the analytical result. In case of Nb the ratio of hydrochloric acid to water should be greater than 3:1(v / v) for the best analytical result. For the Pb determination use of diluted hydrochloric acid compared to the mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid showed a better analytical result.

  • Effect of alloying element additions to Ag on thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of sheath materials for Bi-Pb-Sr-Ca-Cu-O(BSCCO) tapes has been characterized. The thermal conductivity at low temperature range (10~300K) of Ag and Ag alloys were evaluated by both direct and indirect measurement techniqueas and compared with each other, It was observed that the thermal conductivity decreases with increasing the content of alloying element such as Au, Pd and Mg. Thermal conductivity of pure Ag at 3 0K was measured to be 994.0 W(m.K) on the other hand, the corresponding values of $Ag_{0.9995}Mg_{0.0005}$, $Ag_{0.974}$, $Au_{0.025}$, $Mg_{0.001}$, $Ab_{0.973}$, $Au_{0.025}$, $Mg_{0.002}$ and $Ag_{0.92}$, $Pb_{0.06}$, $Mg_{0.02}$ were 342.6, 62.1, 59.2 and 28.9 W(m.K), respectively, indicating 3 to 30 times lower than that of pure Ag. In addition, the thermal conductivity of pure Ag measured by direct and indirect measurement techniques was 303.2 and 363.8 W(m.K) The difference in this study is considered to be within an acceptable error range compared to the reference data.

  • In this study washing efficiency and desorption isotherms for heavy petroleum oil (HPO), Zn, and Pb bound to complex contaminated soils were examined using various soil flushing agents. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), methanol, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), and citric acid were selected as soil flushing agents. 3% (w/v) and 4% SDS showed the highest removal efficiency for HPO, but the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Thus, 3% SDS was chosen as the best soil flushing agent for HPO. In the case of heavy metals, 0.1-M EDTA showed the highest removal efficiencies. But 0.05-M citric acid was selected due to its economic and eco-friendly strengths. The desorption isotherms obtained using Freundlich and Langmuir models indicated that the maximum desorption characteristics ($K_F$ and $Q_{max}$) of HPO with 4% SDS and 90% methanol and heavy metals with 0.1-M EDTA and 0.1-M citric acid, respectively, were markedly lower than in other cases. In addition, when 4% SDS and 90% methanol were used for HPO in the range of $C_e$ higher than 600 mg/L, and when 0.1M citric acid and 0.1M EDTA were used for Zn and Pb in the range of $C_e$ higher than 300 and 100 mg/L, respectively, the distribution constant converged to certain levels. Thus, constant values of $K_U$ and $K_L$ were determined. It was found that these constants represent the maximum desorption capacity and they can be used as distribution coefficients of desorption equilibrium for the flushing agents. The results of this study provided fundamental information for the selection of the best agents as well as for the process design and operation of soil washing/soil flushing of complex contaminated soils.

  • To test the potential effects of extracellular electron shuttles (EES) on the rate and extent of heavy metal release from contaminated soils during microbial iron reduction, we created anaerobic batch systems with anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) as a surrogate of EES, and with contaminated soils as mixed iron (hydr)oxides and microbial sources. Two types of soils were tested: Zn-contaminated soil A and As/Pb-contaminated soil B. In soil A, the rate of iron reduction was fastest in the presence of AQDS and > 3500 mg/L of total Fe(II) was produced within 2 d. This suggests that indigenous microorganisms can utilize AQDS as EES to stimulate iron reduction. In the incubations with soil B, the rate and extent of iron reduction did not increase in the presence of AQDS likely because of the low pH (< 5.5). In addition, less than 2000 mg/L of total Fe(II) was produced in soil B within 52 d suggesting that iron reduction by subsurface microorganisms in soil B was not as effective as that in soil A. Relatively high amount of As (~500 mg/L) was released to the aqueous phase during microbial iron reduction in soil B. The release of As might be due to the reduction of As-associated iron (hydr)oxides and/or direct enzymatic reduction of As(V) to As(III) by As-reducing microorganisms. However, given that Pb in liquid phase was < 0.3 mg/L for the entire experiment, the microbial reduction As(V) to As(III) by As-reducing microorganisms has most likely occurred in this system. This study suggests that heavy metal release from contaminated soils can be strongly controlled by subsurface microorganisms, soil pH, presence of EES, and/or nature of heavy metals.
