  • This study evaluated the optimal soil washing conditions for toxic metals considering the removal efficiency of toxic metals from contaminated soils as well as from soil washing effluents. In the contaminated soils, As was the major contaminant and extracted by sodium hydroxide solution better than by sulfuric acid. However, in the case of the treatment of soil washing effluents, sodium hydroxide was less effective extractant because soil organic matter extracted by sodium hydroxide prevented the solid-liquid phase separation and toxic metal removal. In the treatment of soil washing effluents with sulfuric acid, toxic metals in the effluents were mostly precipitated at the pH above 6.5. In addition, granular ferric oxide (GFO) as an adsorbent enhanced the removal of As and Pb indicating that toxic metals in the washing effluents can be removed almost completely by the use of combined adsorption-neutralization process. This study suggests that soil washing techniques for toxic metals should be optimized based on the physical and chemical properties of the contaminated soils, the nature of chemical extractant, and the removal efficiency and effectiveness of toxic metals from the soils as well as soil washing effluents.

  • The total amount of fluidized bed incinerator ash, i.e. incombustion materials generated from the municipal solid waste incineration(MSWI) in Korea was approximately 14,000 tons in 2006. Most of the ash after ferrous metal separation is finally discard to the landfill sites. In the present work, possibility for recycling of the ash is studied to utilize the ash as raw materials for ceramic products. Incombustion materials obtained from the two different incinerators were used to recover the raw materials by applying the magnetic separation and screening process to remove metallic particles. The raw materials show relatively low heavy metals content obtained from the KSLP leaching tests. The ceramic products were prepared by mixing the clay with the various amounts of the raw material. The physical properties, i.e. shrinkage rate, absorbancy and compressive strength of the ceramic products sintered at $1,000^{\circ}C$ and $1,050^{\circ}C$, respectively were improved by increasing the addition amounts of the incinerator ash. Based on the leaching tests the ceramic products also be satisfied with the standard limits on the leachability of heavy metals because most of the metallic materials are effectively removed from the incombustion materials by appling the separation processes.

  • The x-ray powtler pattern of single phase $Bi_2S_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}$ has been identified and fullyindexed using a pseudotetragonal subcell with a= 5.408, c = 30.83 $\AA$ and an incommensurate supercellwith reciprocal lattice vector, X$q^*$, given by $q^*=0.211b^*-c^*$. The x -ray powder pattern of the Pb-free110K superconductor phase "$Bi_2S_2CaCu_2O_{10+x}$" has many lines which belong t.o an incommensuratesupercell. Using elect.ron d~ffraction pImt.ographs as a indexing guide, an indexing scheme for the powderpattern has been obtained. The unit cell has a geometrically orthorhombic subcell a=5.411, b= 5.420, c=37.29(2) $\AA$. Supercell reflections have indices that are derived from the subcell k, 1 indices by addition uf$\pm q^*$, where $\pm q^*=0.211b^*-0.78c^*$The incommensurate con~ponent In the b dwection, $\delta$, is the same for both phases but on going from2212 to 2223 phase, the superlattic component in the c direction changes from commensurate($\varepsilon$=1) toincommensurate($\varepsilon$=0.78).X>$\varepsilon$=0.78).

  • Anabaena variabilis A TCC 29413. a photoautotrophic and nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria. was investigated on the environmental factors regulating the growth and nitrogen lixation activity. A good growth of cyanobacteria] cells was observed due to nitrogen t1xation by the heterocyst differentiation in nitrogen free Allen and Arnon (]/8) medium. The nitrogenase activity was appeared to be in proportion to the cell growth lor 6 days then drastically decreased in the later growth period when the nitraTe was accumulated to high level in the culture to cause the inhibition. The optima] conditions lilr the cell growth and nitrogenase activity of A. varillbili.l were anaerobic. IO.OO0 lux. $30^{\circ}C$ and pH 8 with the nitrogen Cree minimal medium. The activity was significantly inhihited by the low concentrations of ammonium and nitrate. but was stimulated b) the ]ow Ieve] of phosphate and carbonate sources. The treatments of several toxic heavy metals showed strong inhibition of the cell growth and nitrogenase activity by O.3~10 ppm in the order of $Hg^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Co^{2+}$ > $Zn^{2+}$ > $Ph^{2+}$, and the concentrations for 50% inhibition of the maximum activity were 0.41. 0.47. 0.5 L 0.66 and 8.1 ppm. respectively. The addition of carbohydrates (0.5~ 1.0%) in the dark condition stimulated the growth and activity in the order of sucrose > fructose > glucose.

  • The ambient TSP data measured at Seoul, Incheon. Taean, Daegu, Busan in Korea were used to explain the chemical composition and general features of Asian Dust (AD) observed in Korea. 9 episodes out of 19 were sampled from 2000 through May 2002, and measurements were conducted covering ionic and metal components with mass concentration. The results showed that daily averaged mass concentration (TSP) during the AD episodes was 458 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, and ionic and metal concentrations were 27.93 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ and 71.7 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, respectively, accounting for 6.1 % and 15.5% of the total aerosol mass. TSP concentrations during episodes were varied from 120 to 1742 $\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥ according to the impact of Asian Dusts and had a tendency of showing higher values at sites in the west side of Korea, which can be explained by the effect of diffusion and deposition. In this study, ionic components like Ca (NO$_3$)$_2$, CaSO$_4$, NaNO$_3$, Na$_2$SO$_4$ were prominent types in secondary aerosol during AD periods and also indicated that V, Co as well as soil elements such as Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, K correlated well with Al, while Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn didn't agree well with it. In addition, enrichment factors (EFs) for each metal component were obtained to provide simple information about source contribution of Asian Dust, and the results were compared with those from other AD studies. In this study, the results showed that aerosol properties in Korea during the Asian Dust were considerably different from those of general atmospheric condition and specially varied from case to case rather than site to site, which implies that there are certain variations in the soil of source region, pathways of air mass, and meteorological condition. For the enhanced study, those factors should be combined with the features of Asian Dust resolved from this study.

  • As shown during the 2009 pandemic H1N1 (A(H1N1)pdm09) outbreak, egg-based influenza vaccine production technology is insufficient to meet global demands during an influenza pandemic. Therefore, there is a need to adapt cell culture-derived vaccine technology using suspended cell lines for more rapid and larger-scale vaccine production. In this study, we attempted to generate a high-growth influenza vaccine strain in MDCK cells using an A/Puerto/8/1934 (H1N1) vaccine seed strain. Following 48 serial passages with four rounds of virus plaque purification in MDCK cells, we were able to select several MDCK-adapted plaques that could grow over $10^8PFU/ml$. Genetic characterization revealed that these viruses mainly had amino acid substitutions in internal genes and exhibited higher polymerase activities. By using a series of Rg viruses, we demonstrated the essential residues of each gene and identified a set of high-growth strains in MDCK cells ($PB1_{D153N}$, $M1_{A137T}$, and $NS1_{N176S}$). In addition, we confirmed that in the context of the high-growth A/PR/8/34 backbone, A/California/7/2009 (H1N1), A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2), and A/environment/Korea/deltaW150/2006 (H5N1) also showed significantly enhanced growth properties (more than $10^7PFU/ml$) in both attached- and suspended-MDCK cells compared with each representative virus and the original PR8 vaccine strain. Taken together, this study demonstrates the feasibility of a cell culture-derived approach to produce seed viruses for influenza vaccines that are cheap and can be grown promptly and vigorously as a substitute for egg-based vaccines. Thus, our results suggest that MDCK cell-based vaccine production is a feasible option for producing large-scale vaccines in case of pandemic outbreaks.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the accumulation of metallic elements and the control effect of marine pollution caused by ocean dumping in the sediments at a waste disposal area in the Yellow Sea. In July 2009, concentrations of organic matter and metallic elements (Al, Fe, As, Cd, Cr, Co, Hg, Ni, Mn, Pb, and Zn) were measured in surface sediments at the site. The ignition loss (IL) in the surface sediments showed a mean value of 15.4%, about 1.5 times higher than the mean value of the sediments in the coastal areas of Korea. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) at some disposal sites exceeded 20 mg $O_2/g{\cdot}dry$, which signifies the initial concentration of marine sediment pollutants in Japan. The disposal sites contain higher concentrations of Cr, Cu and Zn than the sediments of bays and estuaries that might be contaminated. The magnitude of both metal enrichment factors (EF) and adverse biological effects suggest that pollution with Cr and Ni occurred due to the dumping of waste in the study area. In addition, the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) showed that the surface sediments were moderately contaminated. By the mid-2000s, when the amount of waste dumped at this site was the highest, the concentration of metallic elements was higher than ever recorded. On the other hand, in 2008-09, the need for environmental management was relatively low compare with the peak. As a result, the quality of marine sediment has been enhanced, considering the effect of waste reduction and natural dilution in the disposal area.

  • The positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) effect in (1-x)$BaTiO_3$ - $x(Bi_{0.5}K_{0.5})TiO_3$ doped with $Nb_2O_5$ was investigated. $(Bi_{1/2}K_{1/2})TiO_3$ (BKT) is more environment-friendly than $PbTiO_3$ in order to use in PTC thermistors. The incorporation of 1 mol% BKT to $BaTiO_3$ increased the Curie temperature (Tc) to $148^{\circ}C$. Doping of $Nb_2O_5$ to $Ba_{0.99}(Bi_{0.5}K_{0.5})_{0.01}TiO_3$ (BaBKT) ceramic has enhanced its PTCR effects. For the sample containing 0.025 mol% $Nb_2O_5$, it showed good PTCR properties; low resistivity at room temperature (${\rho}_r$) of 30 $\Omega{\cdot}cm$, a high PTCR intensity of approximately $3.3\times10^3$, implying the ratio of maximum resistivity to minimum resistivity (${\rho}_{max}/{\rho}_{min}$) in the measured temperature range, and a large resistivity temperature factor (a) of 13.7%/$^{\circ}C$ along with a high Curie temperature (Tc) of $167^{\circ}C$. In addition, the cooling rate of the samples during the sintering process had an influence on their PTCR behavior. All the samples showed the best ${\rho}_{max}/{\rho}_{min}$ ratio when they have cooled down at a rate of $600^{\circ}C$/min.

  • Lead free positive temperature coefficient of resistivity (PTCR) ceramics based on $BaTiO_3-(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ solid solution were prepared by a conventional solid state reaction method. The phase structure was showed single phase with perovskite structure regardless calcinations temperature and $Ba_{1-x}(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})_xTiO_3$ structure was transformed from tetragonal to orthorhombic phase at $x{\geq}0.15$ mole. The XRD peaks with $45^{\circ}{\sim}46^{\circ}$ shifted in right the influence of crystal structure change and the intensity of peak was decreased with additive $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$. The curie temperature risen with additive $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ but disappeared for $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ addition more than 0.15 mole in TMA. In relative permittivity, the curie temperature by the transform of ferroelectric phase risen with additive $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ but decreased in relative permittivity. Also, the peak of new curie temperature showed the sample containing $0.025{\sim}0.045$ mole of $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ near $70^{\circ}C$ caused by phase transform from ferroelectric to ferroelectric and the peak of new curie temperature disappeared at 0.045 mole of $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$. In our study, it was found that the PTCR in $BaTiO_3-(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ system was possible for $0{\sim}0.025$ mole of $(Bi_{0.5}Na_{0.5})TiO_3$ and the maximum curie temperature by phase transition showed about at $145^{\circ}C$.
