Relationship between N-screen Service and Home TV: Focusing on the Korean Representative N-Screen Service, Tving (N 스크린 서비스와 홈TV간 대체 및 보완관계에 대한 실증적 연구: 국내 대표 N스크린 서비스인 티빙을 중심으로)

  • This study investigates whether the use of N-screen service affects the use of Home TV service as a supplement or substitution. In this study, we collected 132 available survey answers from CJ Hellovision Tving users. We found supplement relationship between Tving and Home TV, which implies that the more use in Tving service, the use of Home TV increases as much as 36.4%. From the result, some meaningful implications were derived. First, a direction for content price negotiation between N-screen providers and terrestrial broadcasters can be suggested. Second, the result will provide a suggestion for establishing a competitive strategy between N-screen providers and Pay-TV providers. Third, this study may solve copyright dispute between content providers and pay TV operators.

Convergence and Substitutability between IPTV and Digital Cable TV on Subscribers (IPTV와 디지털 케이블 TV 간의 융합과 대체성 강화에 따른 가입자 변동)

  • Due to rapid convergence trends in the digital pay TV market, differentiation among the competing medias decreases and substitutability is increasing. The current study aims to explain the effect of service substitutability among competing media on the size of domestic digital pay TV subscribers. For the analysis, the Lotka-Volterra model, an ecological competitive diffusion model, was used to obtain the basic model for a simulation study. A simulation was performed by adjusting independent variables of substitutability to estimate the size of subscriber for particular media. The relationship between the digital cable TV and the IPTV is identified as a predator-prey relationship and the digital cable TV is found to be superior to the IPTV. The simulation results showed that the increase of convergence and substitutability result in the decrease of the entire media market. Especially, the IPTV is estimated to face the greatest loss in this context.

  • The Conditional Access System is a complete system for ensuring that broadcasting services be accessible to only those who are entitled to receive them. Secure key management and efficient delivery mechanism are very important design factors to this system. In this paper, we propose secure and efficient protocols which would be well fitted to a Pay TV system including the satellite DMB. Further. by applying our protocol to the existing conditional access system, we propose a new system that properly enables the control of conditional access to the Pay TV in satellite DMB environment.

Studies for the Audiences' Welfare Effects from the Real Time Retransmission of Terrestrial TV Channels through the PayTV Networks (유료방송 매체를 통한 지상파채널 재전송의 후생효과 연구)

  • The contents provided by the terrestrial broadcasters have governed the market based on their excellent quality in Korea. In spite of the launching of various pay TV services focusing on multi-channel, it is not yet easy to find out the substitutionary pay TV channels for the terrestrial. Therefore, the real time retransmission of the terrestrial channels brings about the crucial effects on the pay TV's competency, especially on the new media as the invisible barrier. So it is frequently proposed to change the aim of the retransmission policy from the universal access to the promotion of media industries. The retransmission can be divided into two types as the must carry and retransmission consent. In Korean situation, keeping or reducing the must carry channel would be appropriate rather than expanding them. However, periodic investigation into the public effects of the must carry is necessary, instead of it. Moreover, the rational and fair monetary compensation for the commercial channels(MBC, SBS, KBS2) is arising as the bottle neck in the retransmission agreements between the broadcasters. The conjoint analysis was carried out to estimate the welfare growth from the retransmission, based on the stated preference from the audiences' point of view. For must carry channels, it was certified as the 'win-win' strategy for both sides and audiences. For the commercial channels, it is revealed to be beneficial to the audiences. Thereafter, the standards for the rational price were suggested to promote the retransmission. This can contribute for inspiring the dynamic vitality to the media industry by reinforcing the contents competencies and for establishing the long term growth strategies.

  • As contents go digital and networks go broadband, there are a lot of changes made to Ad market caused by multimedia and multichannel environment. While platforms as the contents distribution window are increasing, the reality is that additional Ad revenue through platforms is concentrated on mammoth exclusive media because there are small number of the media that has control over platforms is able to create production and provide capital. In addition, as Media rep laws is passed at the Assembly plenary session, tipping effect in Ad market concentrated to some media. In this reality, pay TV market is expected to be within its direct orbit as it is predicted to produce new contents and distribution growth thanks to a wide variety of genres and experimental challenge. Thus, this study is to propose the methodology and an alternative for pay Ad market expansion. As the result of this research, an improvement scheme of indirect advertisement, virtual advertisement, and prohibited advertising item is suggested, and methodology for advertising market expansion is suggested through enterprise and government.

Study on the Relationship between the Pay TV Subscriber's Genre Preference and VOD Purchase : Focusing on the Movie VOD of IPTV Service (<유료 방송 가입자의 장르 선호도와 VOD 구매의 관계에 관한 연구:IPTV 영화 VOD 이용을 중심으로>)

  • This paper investigates the relationship between the Pay TV subscriber's genre preference and VOD purchase by analyzing actual purchase data of movie VOD of IPTV subscribers for 8 months. The result shows as follows. First, in case of purchasing movie contents below 4000 won, user's genre preference was higher than that of using contents over 4,000 won. This means the subscribers tend to follow their genre preference when the mass-typed recommendation is limited. Second, those who purchase foreign contents show higher genre preference than those who purchase domestic movies. Third, subscribers who purchase more frequently and much more tend to use more diverse genres. Heavy users or those who have higher willingness to pay would consume more diverse contents. It implies that VOD use would increase by supplying the personal recommendation service based on the subscriber's genre preference.

  • This study on the exposed the viewers diversity as a basic cable television service. Diversity is the most basic goal of broadcasting policy has important implications. But still, such as cable and pay-media research on the viewing diversity has made a limited basis. SO much to offer for the cable offers viewers receive the number of channels available to compare the diversity of the field was verified. Price rises of analysis for the cable the more the number of channels offered to supply the channel has increased the diversity of the field. SO granted in accordance with the results of a market strategy, but for a variety of channels to be provided by a policy perspective, the price depending on the choice of a variety of audiences can be quite limited means. That is a wide range of viewers watching the channel had a right to be limited. These phenomena to improve the pay television service and the need to manage the Product channel diversity index was raised.

  • This study aims to suggest ways to improve the dissemination of TV for the blind and deaf in the convergence environment of broadcasting and communication. As candidates for improvement of the project, it presents three alternatives: ①built-in set-top box in the TV, ②converting to a smart TV, and ③the development of specialized functions for the disabled in the set-top box. Through interviews with pay-TV and TV industry experts and disability experts, their opinions on each alternative were collected. To promote alternatives, this study suggests: collaboration between governments and companies, provision of incentives for participating companies, and revision related law and broadcasting technology standards.

  • In this paper, we describe access control system for protection of pay TV program in digital DBS(Direct Broadcast satellite) system. We also propose a possible access control system and operation scenario for scrambling and descrambling which are important in access control system. Transport stream structure and option, entitlement checking message and entitlement management message for access control on digital broadcasting system are described in this paper. Especially, the authentication based on Flat-Shamir and Gulllou-Quisquater schemes required for verification of proper subscriber as access control is oriented to smart card number and subscriber ID(Identity). It has less restriction than scheme oriented to descrambler number.
