Generally, the California Bearing Ratio(CBR) for the material of subgrade is estimated without considering the anti-frost layer into the subgrade layer when pavements are designed. A pavement structure is determined according to the CBR. However, recently the design method taking the anti-frost layer into the subgrade layer is getting prevail. It makes the top of the subgrade layer strengthen and the thickness of the road pavement structure decreased. By the way, some confusion may be caused because theoretically the general equation for the mean CBR to combine the material of the subgrade layer and anti-frost layer have not been developed well. In this paper, laboratory and field CBR tests were performed to estimate of the mean CBR for the subgrade layer including the anti-frost layer. From the basis of the test results, modified equation which is calculating the mean CBR of the subgrade layer has been proposed. Finally, economical efficiency was considered by comparing the pavement thickness with the road pavement design using CBR of the subgrade layer alone and the road pavement design using the mean CBR including the anti-frost layer.

In this paper, actual bridges constructed with SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) deck pavement and virtual bridges substituted the deck pavement with polymer concrete under the same conditions were statically analyzed to investigate applicability of the thin polymer concrete bridge deck pavements. PSC (prestressed Concrete) girder bridge, steel box girder bridge, PSC box girder bridge, and RC (Reinforced Concrete) rahmen bridge constructed with the SMA deck pavement were analyzed and compared to evaluate various types of the bridge. The bridge deck and pavement were assumed to be fully bonded and the stress and deformation during the construction were ignored while those due to pavement weight and vehicle loading were analyzed. According to the analysis results, the stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete due to the pavement weight were smaller than those using the SMA because of smaller self weight due to lighter unit weight and thinner thickness of the pavement. The stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete due to the vehicle loading were larger than those using the SMA because of the smaller area moment of inertia due to the thinner pavement thickness. In case that the pavement weight and vehicle loading applied simultaneously, the stress and deformation of the bridges using the polymer concrete were smaller because effect of self weight reduction was more dominant. Investigation of performance of the bridge deck pavement and analysis of economical efficiency are warranted.
The stresses in concrete pavement systems are larger when vehicle loads are applied at pavement edges, and these large stresses significantly affect the behavior and performance of pavements. Therefore, in this study, the stress distribution and the critical stresses in concrete pavements were investigated using a finite element model when dual-wheel single-, tandem-, and tridem-axle loads were applied at pavement edges. First, the stress distribution along the longitudinal and transverse directions was analyzed, and then the effects of slab thickness, concrete elastic modulus, and foundation stiffness on the stress distribution were investigated. The effect of the tire contact pressure related to the tire print area was also studied. The location of the critical stress occurrence in concrete pavements was finally investigated. From this study, it was found that the critical concrete stress due to edge loads became larger as the concrete elastic modulus increased, the slab thickness increased, and the foundation stiffness decreased. The effect of the tire contact pressure on the critical stress was clear as the slab thickness became smaller. The critical stress location in the transverse direction was independent of the concrete elastic modulus and the foundation stiffness; however, it moved into the interior as the slab thickness increased. The critical stress location in the longitudinal direction was under the axle for single- and tandem-axle loads, but for tridem-axle loads, it tended to move under the middle axle from the outer axles as the concrete elastic modulus and/or slab thickness increased and the foundation stiffness decreased.
OBJECTIVES : The objective of this research is to determine the integrity of pavement structures for areas where voids exist. Furthermore, we conducted the study of voided-area analysis and remaining life prediction for pavement structures using finite element method. METHODS : To determine the remaining life of the existing voided areas under asphalt concrete pavements, field and falling weight deflectometer (FWD) tests were conducted. Comparison methods were used to have better accuracy in the finite element method (FEM) analysis compared to the measured surface displacements due to the loaded trucks. In addition, the modeled FEM used in this study was compared with well-known software programs. RESULTS : The results show that a good agreement on the analyzed and measured displacements can be obtained through comparisons of the surface displacement due to loaded trucks. Furthermore, the modeled FEM program was compared with the available pavement-structure software programs, resulting in the same values of tensile strains in terms of the thickness of asphalt concrete layers. CONCLUSIONS : The study, which is related to voided-area analysis and remaining life prediction using FEM for pavement structures, was successfully conducted based on the comparison between our methods and the sinkhole grade used in Japan.

PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to analyze and evaluate the behavior of orthotropic steel bridge deck pavement using three-dimensional finite element analysis and full-scale wheel load testing. METHODS: Since the layer thickness and material properties used in the bridge deck pavement are different from its condition, it is very difficult to measure and access the behavior of bridge deck pavement in the field. To solve this problem, the full-scale wheel load testing was conducted on the PSMA/Mastic bridge deck pavement and the deflection of bridge deck and horizontal tensile strain on top of pavement were measured under the loading condition. Three-dimensional finite element analysis was conducted to predict the behavior of bridge deck pavement and the predicted deflection and tensile strain values are compared with measured values from the wheel loading testing. RESULTS: Test results showed that the predicted deflections are 10% lower than measured ones and the error between predicted and measured horizontal tensile strain values is less than 2% in the critical location. CONCLUSIONS: The fact indicates that the proposed the analysis is found to be accurate for estimating the behavior of bridge deck pavements.
The porous pavement system is widely considered very effective in urban street because of its various benefits on safety and environment, but the pavement thickness design system has not been established yet. In porous pavement system. rainwater penetrates to the subgrade through porous pavements layers. Porous pavements are expected to reduce or alleviate the problems caused by impermeable pavement layer such as flood damage due to heavy rain in the city, drainage load, disorder in ecosystem, and heat island. However, its structural design methods in traffic roads has not been made mainly because of not being able to consider adequately the effect of rainwater on subgrade strength. In this study, structural design method of porous pavements is suggested after considering the subgrade weakness due to rainwater and numerical mechanical analysis. It is noted that elastic modulus of subgrade is reduced by 20% as subgrade moisture content is increased by 2% at optimum moisture content in the literature review. As a result of both finite element analysis and strength loss of subgrade by the existing design method, it is necessary to increase subbase thickness about 30cm in porous pavements compared with the existing traffic road pavement system. It is similar to premium thickness of structural design of porous pavements in Japan.
Purpose: The Seoul Metropolitan Government classifies the cavity risks into emergency, priority, general, and observation grades in consideration of the cavity size, asphalt pavement thickness, and pavement depth based on the cavity management grade criteria of Seoul. In this study, the depth of cracking was measured at 17 cracks identified by checking the pavement condition of the cavity at 265 cavities found in the 2019 cavity investigation service. Method: In the first phase, crack width and depth were measured using a vernier caliper, taper gauge, and depth gauge to check the cracks of the identified cavities. In the second phase, the location of the largest crack in the upper road surface was confirmed, and A.C. was drilled to further measure the crack depth. Results: As a result, the cavity management level was raised in nine of the 17 test cavity identified. Therefore, in case of emergency and priority recovery, the grade should be adjusted according to the depth of pavement crack and the thickness of residual A.C. pavement. Conclusion: In the case of cracks in the upper part of the cavity, the crack progression must be determined through the perforation and the remaining asphalt concrete thickness must be determined to determine the cavity grade.
In this study, a series of finite element numerical analyzes were performed considering the pavement thickness and traffic load for the purpose of stability analysis on the cavity ground. In order to verify the validity of this numerical method, the previous numerical analysis was used to simulate the mechanical behavior of cavity ground, and the results were compared and analyzed. Also, from the numerical results, it was possible to confirm the dynamic behavior of the ground by confirming the change of ground void ratio, surface settlement, and shear stress, and using the relationship between stress ratio, non-destructive depth and surface settlement, the safety of the was analyzed. As a result, as the pavement thickness decreased and the traffic load increased, the non-destructive depth and the overall stability of the ground decreased with the increase of surface settlement.
PURPOSES : The permeable pavement type has been rapidly developed for solving problems regarding traffic noise in the area of housing complex and heavy rainwater drainage in order to account for the climate change. In this regards, the objective of this study is to figure out the characteristics of pavement types. METHODS : The laboratory test for deriving optimum asphalt content (OAC) was conducted using the mixtures of the permeable asphalt surface for the pavement surface from Marshall compaction method. Based on its results, the pavement construction at the test field was conducted. After that, the site performance tests for measuring the traffic noise, strength and permeability were carried out for the relative evaluation in 2 months after the traffic opening. The specific site tests are noble close proximity method (NCPX), Light falling deflectometer test (LFWD) and the compact permeability test. RESULTS : The ordered highest values of the traffic noise level can be found such as normal dense graded asphalt, drainage and porous structure types. In the results from LFWD, the strength values of the porous and drainage asphalt types had been lower, but the strength of normal asphalt structure had relatively stayed high. CONCLUSIONS :The porous structure has been shown to perform significantly better in permeability and noise reduction than others. In addition to this study, the evaluation of the properties and the determination of the optimum thickness for the subgrade course under the porous pavement will be conducted using ground investigation technique in the further research.
A pavement construction process consists of series of lay-down operation for pavement materials to form a designated thickness and compaction operation for the lay-down layer to form a designated strength. A technological breakthrough in pavement compaction equipment was made in last 15 years in western countries: intelligent compaction roller, that is equipped with GPS along with other pavement response sensors is becoming a game-changer in pavement construction. This paper introduces AR system that may be used in asphalt pavement compaction operation using intelligent compactor. Since AR technology is very new concept in road construction society, a suggestion for accompanying education program was also made for specific task group in pavement compaction operation. Since AR technology has not been introduced in asphalt pavement compaction operation, the AR compaction management would lead the construction quality of asphalt pavement to the beyond level.
