High-resolution seismic reflection surveying at paved areas using an S-wave type land streamer

  • High-resolution S-wave reflection surveying has been successfully conducted on paved areas using a Land Streamer originally designed by the author. The main feature of the Land Streamer tool is the non-stretch woven belt on which geophone units are mounted to form a multichannel geophone array similar to a marine streamer. Because it is easily towed by a vehicle or by hand, the tool leads to high performance in field measurements and resultant cost-effectiveness of high-resolution reflection surveys. Although each geophone unit is coupled to the pavement through a metallic baseplate instead of being firmly planted in the ground, the Land Streamer tool provides comparatively clean data, unaffected by traffic noise even on the pavement. Thus, the tool is capable of expanding the opportunity for S-wave reflection surveys in urban areas where many surfaces are paved and traffic noise is severe. A series of high-resolution S-wave reflection surveys on paved areas delineated detailed structures of surface layers shallower than 60 m, and proved the wide applicability of the tool to engineering, environmental applications, and earthquake disaster prevention projects.

도시녹지의 포장유형이 감성이미지에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of Land Cover Types on Sensibility Image in Urban Greenspace)

  • The present study was conducted with the object of measuring sensibility image through an experiment with human bodies and indexing human feelings according to land cover types. The temperature by land cover types formed the lowest temperature in planted areas and the highest temperature in paved areas. The wind velocity is stronger in bare grounds, the surface of water and building areas than planted areas, grassland and paved areas. In the case of using a globe thermometer, a solar controled device confirmed the planted areas. In summer, an increase of thermal sensation are indicated a decrease of amenity, and the sensation which has high correlationship is in order by amenity, thermal sensation, airflow sensation and humidity sensation.

공원녹지의 토지피복비율과 기온간의 요인분석 (Factor Analysis of the Relation Between Land Cover Ratio of Green Spaces and Temperature)

  • The present study examined the relation between land cover condition and temperature in various types of urban green spaces. The diagram of temperature distribution showed that high-temperature zones are formed around paved areas, and low temperature zone around planted areas and grassy areas. Even in planted areas where low-temperature zones were formed, temperature was different according to hierarchical structure. That is, temperature was relatively low in areas covered with arbor + sub-arbor. With regard to land cover ratio, the increase of planted areas and grassy areas had an effect on the fall of temperature and the effect was higher in order of planted areas and grassy areas. On the contrary, paved areas and bare areas had an effect on the rise of temperature. According to the results of factor analysis, in case of the highest temperature, planted area and grassy area were put together into a factor lowering temperature, paved area and temperature into a factor raising temperature, and bare area alone into a factor of low significance. In case of the lowest temperature, grassy area and bare area were put together into a factor, and the validity of the factor analysis was proved by the analysis of urban heat islands. An increase in the number of trees by height was effective in lowering temperature, and the effect was high in order to arbor and sub-arbor, and the source of coldness in planted area was tall trees.

포장도로 재비산먼지 배출계수 산정을 위한 silt loading의 실시간 측정시스템 개발과 적용 (Development and Application of Real-time Measurement System of Silt Loading for Estimating the Emission Factor of Resuspended Dust from Paved Road)

  • Resuspended dust from paved roads in Seoul and Incheon metropolitan areas is regarded as one of the major $PM_{10}$ sources in these areas, according to the recent emission estimates using the emission factors compiled in AP-42. It is well known that the AP-42 model for estimating $PM_{10}$ emissions from paved roads requires information on silt loadings of particular paved roads. The conventional AP-42 method (vacuum swept method) for road silt sampling, however, is expensive, time consuming, and dangerous. These drawbacks led us to develop a Mobile Dust Monitoring System (MDMS) capable of doing real time measurements of silt loading of paved roads, thereby we could get higher resolution silt loading data both in terms of time and space without too much human efforts and danger. In this study, for the real-time measurement of silt loading of paved roads, the principle used in the TRAKER method of U.S. Desert Research Institute was employed and the entire sampling systems including data acquisition system were designed for theses purpose and mounted on a SUV. The correlation between the silt loading measured by vacuum swept method and the speed corrected ${\Delta}Dust$ was derived for the vehicle-based silt loading measurements, and then the variations of silt loading on paved roads were surveyed using the MDMS in test routes of Seoul and Incheon. From the results of real-time measurements, temporal and spatial variations of silt loading data together with the existence of hot spots were observed for paved roads in Seoul and Incheon. The result of this study will be employed to estimate fugitive dust emissions from paved roads.

Radiation Monitoring in the Residential Environment: Time Dependencies of Air Dose Rate and 137Cs Inventory

  • Background: Residential areas have some factors on the external exposure of residents, who usually spend a long time in these areas. Although various survey has been carried out by the government or the research institutions after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, the mechanism of radiocesium inventory in the terrestrial zone has not been cleared. To better evaluate the radiation environment, this study investigated the temporal changes in air dose rate and 137Cs inventories (Bq/m2) in residential areas and agricultural fields. Materials and Methods: Air dose rate and 137Cs inventories were investigated in residential areas located in an evacuation zone at 5-8 km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. From December 2014 to September 2018, the air dose rate distribution was investigated through a walking survey (backpack survey), which was conducted by operators carrying a γ-ray detector on their backs. Additionally, from December 2014 to January 2021, the 137Cs inventories on paved and permeable grounds were also measured using a portable γ-ray detector. Results and Discussion: In the areas where decontamination was not performed, the air dose rate decreased faster in residential areas than in agricultural fields. Moreover, the 137Cs inventory on paved surfaces decreased with time owing to the horizontal wash-off, while the 137Cs inventory on permeable surfaces decreased dramatically owing to the decontamination activities. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the horizontal wash-off of 137Cs on paved surfaces facilitated the air dose rate decrease in residential areas to a greater extent compared with agricultural fields, in which the air dose rate decreased because of the vertical migration of 137Cs. Results of this study can explain the faster environmental restoration in a residential environment reported by previous studies.

도시 소유역 유효불투수율의 민감도 분석 (Sensitivity analysis of effective imperviousness estimation for small urban watersheds)

  • In this study, a runoff hydrograph and runoff volume were calculated by using the kinetic wave theory for small urban watersheds based on the concept of low impact development(LID), and the effective imperviousness was estimated based on these calculations. The degree of sensitivity of the effective imperviousness of small watersheds to the impervious to pervious area ratio, infiltration capability, watershed slope, roughness coefficient and surface storage depth was then analyzed. From this analysis, the following conclusions were obtained: The effective imperviousness and paved area reduction factor decreased as the infiltration capability of pervious area increased. As the slope of watersheds becomes sharper, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor display an increasing trend. As the roughness coefficient of impervious areas increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor tend to increase. As the storage depth increases, the effective imperviousness and the paved area reduction factor show an upward trend, but the increase is minimal. Under the conditions of this study, it was found that the effective imperviousness is most sensitive to watershed slope, followed by infiltration capability and roughness coefficient, which affect the sensitivity of the effective imperviousness at a similar level, and the storage depth was found to have little influence on the effective imperviousness.

포장지역내 비점오염물질의 유출특성 (Washoff Characteristics of Nonpoint pollutants in Paved Areas)

  • During the dry periods, many types of pollutant are accumulating on the paved surface by vehicle activities and accumulated various pollutants are inflowing to the near watershed areas for the rainfall periods. Also, the metals, toxic chemicals and sediments originated from bridges could be strongly influenced to the watershed areas during the runoff. The result shows that the EMC ranges for 95% confidence intervals in a bridge land use are $10.12\sim128.09mg/L$ for TSS, $6.07\sim21.15mg/L$ for BOD, $2.10\sim6.70mg/L$ for TN and $0.06\sim0.85mg/L$ for TP.

부산 도심지역 기습 폭우 후 형성된 도로면 토사의 재비산에 의한 미세먼지 농도 상승 (Concentration Rise of Fine Particle according to Resuspended Dust from Paved Roads after Sudden Heavy Rain in Busan)

  • This study investigates the concentration sudden rise in fine particle according to resuspended dust from paved roads after sudden heavy rain in Busan on August 25, 2015. The localized torrential rainfall in Busan area occurred as tropical airmass flow from the south and polar airmass flow from north merged. Orographic effect of Mt. Geumjeong enforced rainfall and it amounted to maximum 80 mm/hr at Dongrae and Geumjeong region in Busan. This heavy rain induced flood and landslide in Busan and the nearby areas. The sudden heavy rain moved soil and gravel from mountainous region, which deposited on paved roads and near roadside. These matters on road suspended by an automobile transit, and increased fine particle concentration of air. In addition outdoor fine particle of high concentration flowed in indoor by shoes, cloths and air circulation.

고속도로 청소폐수와 노면유출수의 수질특성 비교 (Comparison of Water Characteristics of Cleaning Wastewater and Stormwater Runoff from Highways)

  • The paved areas in nonpoint source are highly polluted landuses because of high imperviousness and pollutant mass emissions, such as sand, cereals, and dust from vehicle activities. Most of them in highways are collected by cleaning trucks or discharged to the adjacent soil and water system through the drain ditch in stormwater. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between water concentration and total pollutant loadings from the paved areas. From the experiment, CODcr concentration of the cleaning wastewater was 17 times greater than that of the stormwater runoff. Also, concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Zn) were 1.3 to 1.5 times higher when compared to the stormwater runoff. While total discharged loadings was insignificant in the cleaning wastewater. In conclusion, these results provide some evidence that the stormwater runoff may be managed carefully to the aspect of total pollutant loadings and the cleaning wastewater may be handled cautiously with the pollutant concentrations in highways.

도시화된 토지이용에서 유출되는 강우유출수의 유출특성분석 (Characteristics of stormwater runoff from urbanized areas)

  • 도시화된 토지이용은 불투수율이 높고 강우시 다량의 비점오염물질이 유출되어 지표수 및 지하수에 영향을 끼친다. 이러한 포장지역의 비점오염물질로 인한 수질오염을 저감하기 위하여 환경부는 수질오염총량제도 및 개발사업에 대한 비점오염 저감시설 설치신고 제도를 도입하여 운영 중에 있다. 그러나 비점오염저감시설의 규모 및 저감기능 설계를 위해서는 유출특성 분석이 필요하나 현재 기초자료가 부족하여 원단위 산정 등의 애로점으로 남아있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 원단위 산정 및 저감시설의 규모산정에 필요한 강우유출수 특성과 EMC를 제시하고자 한다. 모니터링은 도로 및 주차장에서 3년간 총 30개의 강우사상에 대하여 수행되었다. 초기강우 유출현상은 강우 시작 후 30분 동안 매우 분명하게 나타났으며, 유출수의 농도에 영향을 미치는 인자는 강우량, 유역면적, 토지이용, 지리 및 지형적 특성으로 분석되었다. 본 연구결과는 향후 포장지역의 원단위 산정 및 저감시설 설계시 기초자료로써 활용가능할 것으로 판단된다.
