  • Several patients of trigeminal neuralgia were observed pathologically. The results were as follows. 1. Three of five were female and two of five were male. The oldest was 76-year-old man and the youngest 49-year-old woman. The average age was 59.4 years. 2. The main division of involvement was third branch and two cases were combined with infra orbital nerve. 3. There was no constant pathologic changes in nerve tissue, but capillary proliferation were observed in perineural connective tissue in two cases. In one case, there was microneuromatic lesion and mild schwann cell proliferation. But in general, there were nonspecific pathological changes in nerve fiber.

  • This study was conducted to examine the pathological changes of rat peripheral nervous system during exposure to tellurium known to be a demyelinating agent by using teasing nerve fiber method and quantitative light microscopic analysis by image analyzer. The pellet containing 1.2% of tellurium were fed for 3, 5, 7, 9, 13 days to male wistar rats (21 days old) and then neurologic symptom and the feature of nerve fiber myelination were studied. From this study, following results were obtained. In 3 days treated group, it showed various neurologic symptom and teased nerve fiber showed slight irregularity of the myeline sheath. In 5 days and 7 days treated groups, it showed the segmental demyetination in larger size fiber and widening of nodes of ranvier. In 9 days and 13 days treated groups, the remyelinated fibers were observed and it was generally small in size. We consequently suggest that teasing nerve fiber method and quantitative analysis of nerve fiber were useful pathologic screening method of neurotoxicity of the peripheral nervous system.

  • We analyzed Radioisotope scan findings of 46 patients of thyroiditis which were proven pathologically at K.C.H. The results were as follows 1) 45 patients were female, one was male and average age of patients was 37 years old. 2) The lesion site was predominant in both lobe (67%) 3) Hashimoto's thyroiditis showed enlarged thyroid (85%) with cold nodule (20%), diffuse decreased activity (10%), while subacute thyroiditis was presented absent activity (53%), poor visualization (20%) or cold nodule (7%) 4) Radioisotope scan was valuable in evaluations function of thyroid gland and detection of lesion but there was a limit of pathological nature.

  • Fecal examination for survey of natural prevalence of Balantidium coli was performed on 1080 healthy bred pigs in Korea, and the positive rate was 56.2%. In order to observe if Balantidium coli might be a secondary invader after certain initiation of the intestinal lesions, the piglet groups preinfected with the protozoa experimentally were treated with Salmonella cholerasuis, Trichuris. cold stress, HCI, and immunosuppressive drug respectively, but no relation was found between them. Also the protozoa were not detected from the intestinal lesions spontaneously formed of 107 pigs which were checked in the slaughter house. According to the above results, Balantidium coli is not directly associated with the formation of any lesions in the pig's large intestine.

  • This paper was to investigate the biovailability of antipyrine, ampicillin and protein binding in pathological rats and rabbits pretreated with typhoid vaccine. The results are as follows: The absorption of antipyrine and ampicillin respectively were reduced in rats pretreated with typhoid vaccine as compared with those of normal rats. Especially absorption of ampicillin was more decreased than those of antipyrine. The blood level of antipyrine in severe state was decreased but in mild state. Blood level of ampicillin was decreased in mild state as well as in severe state. Relative bioavailability of antipyrine and ampicillin were mostly decreased in rabbits pretreated with typhoid vaccine except that of antipyrine in mild state. Renal clearance of antipyrine was not affected, but that of ampicillin was apt to increase. Protein binding of antipyrine and ampicillin were decreased by high concentration of typhoid vaccine.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to get basic user guidelines of safe and efficient bag-valve-mask application on patients having abnormal pathophysiological pulmonary conditions. Methods: This study was performed by pre-qualified 35 EMS junior and senior students. Participants were instructed to compress ambulatory bag randomly about half, one-third, one-fourth within different airway resistance and pulmonary compliance. Resultant tidal volume and pulmonary wedge pressures on RespiTranier monitor were analysed in relation to pulmonary physiologic index. Results: At least over half compression of bag guaranteed minimal tidal volume regardless of pulmonary conditions. There was no increase of pulmonary wedge pressure above the level of barotrauma on half compression at any pulmonary conditions. Conclusion: Assisted ventilation with ambulatory bag on patients with pathological pulmonary conditions should be over half compressed regardless of respiratory disease entity.

  • Acute toxicity of standardized extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge was examined using male and female ICR mice. Mice were treated with standardized extract the intragastrically at 5 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg, 500 mg/kg or 2,000 mg/kg and observed for two weeks. At the doses used, no mortality or abnormal clinical signs in animals were shown during at the observation period. Also there was no difference in net body weight gain, gross pathological findings at the terminal sacrifice among the groups mice treated with different doses of the test substance. The results suggested that acute oral toxicity of standardized extract of S. miltiorrhiza in mice is very low at the conditions employed in this study.

  • Although there are some questions about the venues of adult neurogenesis, it is undoubtedly accepted that new neurons are born in adult brains. Adult neurogenesis is regulated by a wide array of factors. Insults harmful to brain, such as neurodegenerative diseases, seizure, ischemia and exposure to drugs of abuse, are intricately related to adult neurogenesis. Whereas neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by death or functional loss of specific neurons, recent studies report that they can be accompanied by neurogenesis. In addition, alcohol and drugs of abuse which have been reputed to cause irreversible damage to brain can also generate newly born cells in adult brain. As yet, however, we have little knowledge of the functional significance and roles of adult neurogenesis under pathological settings, not to mention under physiological settings. Accordingly, in this review we briefly summarize the results of studies which focus on adult neurogenesis in insulted brain, instead of trying to draw hurried conclusion regarding the relationship between adult neurogenesis and brain insults.

  • According to the traditional Korean medicine, Dampness-heat (DH)is an abnormal state of the body that results in a pathological accumulation of dampness and heat. DH is caused by overeating fatty, sweet foods or overdrinking alcohol. Exposure to hot and humid atmospheres is another cause of DH. Although many experimental animal model on various diseases related with DH syndrome were established, DH syndrome dermatitis model is not established. Thus, we introduce the experimental animal model of the dermatitis with DH syndrome.

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to have examined the influence on the blood circulation by comparing the differences between stimulating the sympathetic ganglion and the muscle group among the stimulation variables in interferential current stimulation. Method: The object of the study is the twenties(M=8, F=12), who are in great condition and have no pathological report for the blood circulation influence. The intensity of the inferential current stimulation is the medium degree, 100 bps constant current, which is the comfort and degree to confirm the muscle contraction. The areas stimulated are the stellate ganglion area in the seventh cervical vertebrae and the forearm muscle area. Results: We have made sure that there is no change in blood pressure and pulse and that the change in the skin temperature occurred highly. Conclusion: In considering the change of the blood circulation in case of stimulation area by the inferential current stimulation, we have seen that stimulating the sympathetic ganglion area is more effective than stimulating muscle area directly.
