An Analysis of the Delay and Jitter Performance of DBA Schemes for Differentiated Services in EPONs

  • An Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is a low-cost, high-speed solution to the bottleneck problem of a broadband access network. This paper analyzes the delay and the jitter performance of dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) schemes for differentiated services in EPONs. Especially, the average packet delay and the delay jitter of the expedited forwarding (EF) traffic class are compared, with consideration as to whether a cyclic or an interleaved polling scheme is superior. This performance evaluation reveals that the cyclic polling based DBA scheme provides constant and predictable average packet delay and improved jitter performance for the EF traffic class without the influence of load variations.

  • The multistage wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) with multiple remote nodes (RN) can accommodate widely spread subscribers efficiently and it increases the channel usage. We implemented a multistage RN using band add-drop filters and it was applied to a wavelength-locked Fabry-Petor laser diode based gigabit WDM-PON.

Mini-Slot-Based Transmission Scheme for Local Customer Internetworking in PONs

  • We propose a new mini-slot transmission scheme for a passive optical network (PON) in which each customer can be switched either to access mode or to internetworking mode dynamically. In this paper, we present the system implementation (called LAN-PON) as well as the performance of the proposed transmission scheme to illustrate its feasibility and benefits. A mini-slot scheme can rapidly reduce the queuing delay, which increases due to the flooding of the deflected packets in a deflection scheme. We evaluate the impact of mode switching time on the bandwidth gain (throughput) and delay of local area network (LAN) traffic in the LAN-PON with a mini-slot scheme. We also analyze a theoretical delay model of the proposed scheme. The simulation results demonstrate that switching time has an impact on LAN performance, and the average packet delay of the proposed scheme is significantly improved compared to that of the deflection scheme.

Request Deduplication Scheme in Cache-Enabled 5G Network Using PON

  • With the advent of the 5G era, the rapid growth in demand for mobile content services has increased the need for additional backhaul investment. To meet this demand, employing a content delivery network (CDN) and optical access solution near the last mile has become essential for the configuration of 5G networks. In this paper, a cache-enabled architecture using the passive optical network (PON) is presented to serve video on demand (VoD) for users. For efficient use of mobile backhaul, I propose a request deduplication scheme (RDS) that can provide all the requested services missed in cache with minimum bandwidth by eliminating duplicate requests for movies within tolerable range of the quality of service (QoS). The performance of the proposed architecture is compared with and without RDS in terms of the number of requests arriving at the origin server (OS), hit ratio, and improvement ratio according to user requests and cache sizes.

  • A dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) scheme, an inter -optical network unit (ONU) bandwidth scheduling, is presented to provide quality of service (QoS) to different classes of packets in Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs). This scheme, referred to as TADBA, is based on efficient threshold reporting from, and adaptive polling order rearranging of, ONUs. It has been shown that the network resources are efficiently allocated among the three traffic classes by guaranteeing the requested QoS, adaptively rearranging the polling orders, and avoiding nearly all fragmentation losses. Simulation results using an OPNET network simulator show that TADBA performs well in comparison to the available allocation scheme for the given parameters, such as packet delay and channel utilization.

  • 1.25Gbps PON(Passive Optical Network)용 버스트 모드 광 수신기를 설계하고 $0.8{\mu}m$ BiCMOS공정을 사용해 제작하였다. 지수함수 증폭기를 이용하여 AGC(Automatic Gain Control) 신호 생성 소요 시간을 단축시켜 버스트 앞부분의 데이터 손실을 최소화하였다. 측정결과 버스트 모드 광 수신기의 AGC 기능은 정상적으로 잘 동작하고 특성도 양호함을 확인하였다. 한편, 아이패턴의 아이는 열려있기는 하나 심한 파형 왜곡이 있고, 이로 인해 지터 특성 저하되고 있었다.

  • EPON(Ethernet Passive Optical Network: 이더넷 수동 광 네트워크)은 대용량 LAN과 백본망 사이의 트래픽 병목현상을 완화시킬 수 있는 하나의 방법으로 저렴한 비용으로 광대역의 서비스를 제공할 수 있어 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 대용량 LAN과 백본망 사이의 병목현상은 트래픽이 갑자기 증가는 트래픽 특성으로 인해 더욱 심각해진다. 본 논문은 트래픽의 특성을 고려하여 ONU(Optical Network Unit: 광 네트워크 가입자 단말)에게 적절한 대역폭을 할당함으로써 네트워크의 성능을 개선한다. 또한 본 논문은 지원하는 ONU의 수에 상관없이 고정된 시간 이내에 해당 ONU가 다시 서비스 받을 수 있도록 제안 방식을 설계함으로써 지연에 민감한 트래픽을 효율적으로 지원할 수 있다. 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 결과에 따르면, 본 논문에서 제안하는 방식은 최대 사이클 시간을 기준 사이클 시간의 두 배로 제한하면서 기존 방식보다 중위 트래픽에서 패킷 지연 및 ONU 큐 크기를 각각 최대 77%와 82%만큼 감소시킨다.

Passive Star 토플로지와 WDM을 사용한 다중채널 광섬유 LAN을 위한 Multiple Access 르로토콜 (Multiple Access Protocols for a Multichannel Optical Fibre Local Area Network Using a Passive Star Topology and WDM)

  • Two multiple access protocols are proposed for a multichannel WDM optical fibre local area network or metropolitan area network in which users are interconnected using a passive star topology. Each user has a single tunable transmitter and a single tunable receiver. A transmitter sends a control packet before its data packet transmission so that its intended receivers can tune to the proper data channel wavelength. The maximum throughput of the proposed protocols are independent of the effective normalized propagation delay which may include the transmitter and receiver tuning times and the processing delays. The maximum throughputs of the protocols are analyzed and compared with those of the existing ones by numerical examples. The message delay of the R- Aloha/synchronous N-server switch protocol which is suitable for the queued users is also analyzed.

  • As increasing the Internet traffic, many researches on access network are reported for end-to-end highspeed broadband network, where E-PON (Ethernet-Passive Optical Network) is one of reasonable candidates for the network with respect to cost and bandwidth utilization. For the high-speed access network, E-PON needs an efficient bandwidth allocation method. This paper describes a WFBA (Water-Filling Bandwidth Allocation) algorithm for the efficient bandwidth allocation with various simulation test. Based upon the simulation test, we suggest several ways to improve performance of E-PON.

  • This paper physically demonstrates that our proposed method improves the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of significantly increase the number of acceptable optical signals in PON(Passive Optical Network) systems. This method reduced Optical Beat Interference(OBI) by using CDMA.
