  • Following the oil crisis in 1979, there have been surge of movements by the government in Korea to conserve petroleum-based energy in every sector of society. One of these movements was the application of passive solar technologies into the construction of school buildings. Various passive designs are developed paying special regard to architectural and climatic factors. This paper is related to the application of the passive solar technology to elementary school buildings. It is proposed to place the hallway on the south side of the building to improve the thermal performance as well as indoor lighting effects. The cases have been compared with those of the existing school buildings where substantial improvements are noted. Finally, standard drawings are prepared in detail to promote the application of this passive solar technology in practical school building.

  • This paper presents compact dual-band WLAN filter and filter module. They were developed by embedding all of the passive lumped elements into a LTCC substrate. In order to reduce the size/volume of the filter and avoid EM parasitic couplings between the passive elements, the proposed filter was designed using a 3rd order Chebyshev circuit topology and J-inverter transformation technology. The 3rd order Chebyshev bandpass filter was firstly designed for the band-selection of the 802.11b and was then transformed using finite transmission zeros technologies. Finally, the dual-band filter was realized by adding two notch resonators to the 802.11b filter circuit for the band-selection of the 802.11a/g. The maximum insertion losses in the lower and higher passbands were better than 2.0 and 1.3 dB with minimum return losses of 15 and 14 dB, respectively. Furthermore, the filter was integrated with a diplexer to clearly split the signals between 2 and 5 GHz. The maximum insertion and minimum return losses of the fabricated module were 2.2 and 14 dB at 2.4 - 2.5 GHz, and 1.6 and 19 dB at 5.15 - 5.85 GHz, respectively. The overall volume of the fabricated filter was $2.7{\times}2.3{\times}0.59mm^3$.

  • In this study, energy performance analysis of houses in zero energy demonstration town(ZeT) was carried out using the monitoring results. This ZeT was composed 29 zero energy individual houses(ZeH) which were applied passive as well as active technologies. The results are as follows. (1) Residents are generally considered to have been lacking basic mind to save energy, (2) In particular, average yearly total energy consumption per house is 12,834 kWh and specific heating energy is $53.2kWh/m^2{\cdot}yr$ which is higher than that of passive house. This is because of one of the reason just pointed out in subsection (1). (3) Most part of the residual energy load are supplied with only renewable energy, but not operating energy for geothermal heat pump which is use of cheap electricity.

  • As the energy consumed in building area has occupied a lot when looking into energy usage weights in area over the world, energy reduction building, eco-friendly architecture comes to the fore in the modern architecture. Discussions on the eco-friendly architecture have various concept definitions and targets to be achieved. The architectural works of Norman Foster are expressed as high-tech buildings using iron, glass, etc. in appearance, but they appear as those buildings with low energy load by analyzing environmental conditions from initial design stage that each building has, utilizing natural energy with design of outer shell and applying proper technical system. Thus, this study aims at providing basic data of outer shell planning through eco-friendly element technologies by considering pattern and outer shell design of buildings, principles of eco-friendly building plan as an eco-friendly building planning technique of Norman Foster as an example of plans to utilize building pattern, outer shell design and natural environments, in order to utilize passive measures as much as possible to increase energy saving methods and increase comfort by analyzing element technologies in the eco-friendly architecture in line with the modern flow.

  • The importance of smart clothing as a product is increasingly emphasized as further growth in the potential of the smart market is expected. There is a high understanding and sympathy for the potential of smart clothing in the mass consumer market; therefore, commercialization is not actively carried out. This study enhances the understanding of the development direction of products with a focus on technical benefits, in order for smart clothing to gain access to customers as wearable devices. This study identifies major technologies used in smart clothing through an analysis of the patent technology status of smart clothing in Korea. Smart clothing is divided into three types: passive smart, active smart and advanced smart clothing based on a reaction mechanism and functional scope. We present the smart clothing and discuss the product features for three types. According to research, smart clothing products were equipped with passive, active, and advanced smart systems as well as provided new services by converging big data and AI technologies, rather than only using technologies such as sensors, controls, and actuators. Future directions for new smart clothing product development is also discussed in the conclusion.

  • Pressing demands of economic competitiveness, the need for large-scale deployment, minimizing the need of human intervention, and experience from the past events and incidents at operating reactors have guided the evolution and innovations in reactor technologies. Indian innovative reactor 'AHWR' is a pressure-tube type natural circulation based boiling water reactor that is designed to meet such requirements, which essentially reflect the needs of next generation reactors. The reactor employs various passive features to prevent and mitigate accidental conditions, like a slightly negative void reactivity coefficient, passive poison injection to scram the reactor in event of failure of the wired shutdown systems, a large elevated pool of water as a heat sink inside the containment, passive decay heat removal based on natural circulation and passive valves, passive ECC injection, etc. It is designed to meet the fundamental safety requirements of safe shutdown, safe decay heat removal and confinement of activity with no impact in public domain, and hence, no need for emergency planning under all conceivable scenarios. This paper examines the role of the various passive safety systems in prevention and mitigation of severe plant conditions that may arise in event of multiple failures. For the purpose of demonstration of the effectiveness of its passive features, postulated scenarios on the lines of three major severe accidents in the history of nuclear power reactors are considered, namely; the Three Mile Island (TMI), Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents. Severe plant conditions along the lines of these scenarios are postulated to the extent conceivable in the reactor under consideration and analyzed using best estimate system thermal-hydraulics code RELAP5/Mod3.2. It is found that the various passive systems incorporated enable the reactor to tolerate the postulated accident conditions without causing severe plant conditions and core degradation.
