승용 자동차 주요 조종장치의 스테레오타입 조사 (Investigation of stereotypes for principal controls in passenger cars)

  • The aims of this study are to investigate stereotypes of motion-direction and real motion-directions for seven principal controls in passenger cars, and to compare the stereotypes and real motion-directions for the controls. The stereotypes were obtained by using questionnaire survey, in which 385 subjects participated. The real motion-direction data were gathered for 64 passenger cars including RVs and SUVs. The results showed that while there are dominant motion-directions for head light, door key and door lock controls, dominant motion-directions are not found for other controls investigated in this study. The stereotypes of motion-directions for seven controls obtained in this study were much different from those of the real data. Furthermore, the stereotypes for wiper, head light and high beam controls based on the questionnaire survey were opposite to the real motion-directions.

  • This paper introduces experimental results of ride values assessed for domestic and overseas passenger cars. The experiment was executed about four vehicles, three Korean persons, and two roads by measuring human 12-axis. The results include the comparison of the component ride values, overall ride value, and seat effective amplitude transmissibility. The relative comparison of the ride values for different cars is shown in this paper, which may lead us to judge the current address of Korean ride quality-related technology.

  • In automotive engineering, the brand sound is one of the important advantage strategy in a car company. For the design of brand sound, the selection of descriptive word for a car sound is one of major works in automotive sound quality research. In paper, booming sound and rumbling sound, which are professional words used by NVH engineers are used for the design of brand sound. We employed sound metrics which are the subjective parameter used in psychoacoustics. According to most research results, the relationship between subjective evaluations and sound metrics has nonlinear characteristics and is very complex. In order to link these subjective evaluations to sound metrics, the artificial neural network technology has been applied to two-dimensional sound quality index for a passenger car. These indexes is used for 46 passenger cars, which are samples of famous cars in the world. Also the preference in car sounds is evaluated by the trained NVH engineers. We coupled this preference with booming and rumbling sounds by using artificial neural network. In future, the two -dimensional sound index and preference index are very useful fur the development of brand sound in passenger cars.

  • Passengers are much interested in ineroir noise caused speed-up and mass reduction of railway vehicles. Generally, the major noise source for passenger cars are rolling noise and aerodynamic noise. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the noise level and to analyze the noise sources for domestic and KTX trains. We also measured the interior noise and the rolling noise for passenger cars. In result, the noise level is below 65dBA for Seamaeul coachs, and below 66dBA for KTX coachs.

Effects on the Lumbar & Quadriceps Muscle Activities when Getting in and Out of RV · and Passenger Cars

  • Objective: The objective of this study is to compare muscle activity levels of the lumbar and rectus femoris muscle when entering and exiting RV and passenger vehicles. Background: Three varieties of RVs and two varieties of passenger vehicles were selected for this study. Method: Twenty individual(10 male and 10 female) in their twenties and thirties with no chronic back pain or any other illness participated in this study. Participants performed entering and exiting the three models of RVs and two models of passenger cars. Appropriate rest time was given to participants between entering and exiting each vehicle in order to recover from muscle fatigue while performing their tasks. Results: Results from this study show that muscle activity levels were highest for entering RVs and exiting passenger vehicles. There were no significant differences in muscle activity levels for left and right side muscles in regards to entering and exiting vehicles. Application: These results can be used to provide baseline information for reduce muscle fatigue when getting in and out of vehicles.

  • Major countries have tighten their NOx regulation of diesel passenger cars. In the case of the EU, the regulation has been toughen up to 6.25 times since 2000. Despite the regulation the NOx concentration of the ambient has not been reduced proportionally. As these issues, to reduce NOx emission practically, Korea and the EU introduced the real-world driving emission (RDE) regulation and the test method that will be applied after 2017. In this paper, for the regulation to make a soft landing in Korea, 6 diesel passenger cars which met Euro 6a~6d regulation and were equipped with LNT/SCR were tested at a chassis dynamometer with environmental chamber applying the off-cycles (FTP, US06, SC03, HWFET and CADC) and several ambient conditions (-7 and $14^{\circ}C$) as well as certification modes (NEDC, WLTC@ $23^{\circ}C$). The result of the test showed that the ambient temp. and the engine load as a test mode impacted the NOx emission of the cars while the vehicles with SCR emitted NOx lower than with LNT. Additionally, to propose an effective RDE test method, the above result was compared with the results of the other papers which tested RDE using the same cars.

The Influence of Rear-seat Occupants on Front-seat Occupant Fatalities

  • A possible adverse effect on the likelihood of front-seat occupant fatalities from unbelted rear-seat occupants in frontal crashes is investigated using Fatal Accident Reporting System data. Passenger cars which sustained frontal damage and which did not roll over are included in this analysis. Of the frontally damaged cars, only cars containing a driver and a right-front passenger are selected. Then, from these cars, the following three cases are considered: a) left-rear occupant present, b) right-rear occupant present, and c) no one else in the car. Cars belonging to a) or b) contain only three occupants, and those belonging to the last case contain only two occupants. In addition, all occupants are unbelted. To estimate the influence of rear-seat occupants on front-seat occupant fatalities, relative risks of driver and right-front passenger fatalities are compared pairwise across these three cases. The adverse influence of unbelted rear-seat occupants on the likelihood of unbelted front-seat occupant fatalities in frontal crashes is estimated to be 7.9% ${\pm}$ 45%(the error limits indicate one standard error). In other words, front-seat occupant fatalities are increased 7.9% in frontal crashes due to the loadings from unbelted rear-seat occupants. This suggests that the usage of safety belts by rear-seat occupants not only may extend their own lives but also helps in reducing the fatalities of front-seat occupants seated in front of them.

  • A number of researchers have attempted to measure the reverberation time of a passenger car, ut the reverberation time of passenger car is too short to measure with the traditional band pass filter. And if the reverberation time is very short, the product of the reverberation time (T) and the bandwidth (B) of the traditional band pass fitter becomes small. The low limit of BT product required for the measurement of reverberation time with the traditional band pass filter is 16. In order to overcome this problem, the wavelet filter bank was developed. In this study, this new wavelet filter was employed to measure the reverberation times of five different classes of passenger cars. The low limit of BT product required for the measurement of reverberation time with the wavelet filter is 4. The reverberation times of five passenger cars were measured successfully with the new wavelet filter bank. The reverberation times measured in most passenger cars was found to be around 0.04. Compared with general acoustic rooms like concert halls, this is a very short reverberation time

  • In this study, we measured and analyzed the interior noise, the rolling noise and the engine noise at Honam line(Seodaejeon- Jangseong) for passenger and power cars. The noise level is below 69㏈A for Seamaeul PMC(Powered Motor Car) coachs, below 65㏈A for Seamaeul and Mukungwha coachs, over 80㏈A for the driver's room of PMC and DEL (Diesel-Electric Locomotive). We also proposed the criteria of interior noise in free field conditions, below 67㏈A for passenger cars, below 86㏈A for power cars.
