A generalized Scheil equation for the solute redistribution in the absence of the back diffusion during the dendritic solidification of binary alloys is derived, in which coarsening of the secondary dendrite arms is taken into account. The obtained equation essentially includes the original Scheil equation as a subset. Calculated results for typical cases show that the coarsening affects the microsegregation significantly. The eutectic fraction predicted for coarsening is considerably smaller than that for fixed arm spacing. The most important feature of the present equation in comparison with the Scheil equation lies in the fact that there exists a lower limit of the initial composition below which the eutectic is not formed. Based on the generalized Scheil equation and the lever rule, a new regime map of the eutectic formation on the initial composition-equilibrium partition coefficient plane is proposed. The map consists of three regimes: the eutectic not formed, conditionally formed and unconditionally formed, bounded by the solubility and diffusion controlled limit lines.

Innovative and nondestructive characterization techniques have been developed to locate and quantify nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) in the vadose and saturated zones in the subsurface environment. One such technique is the partitioning interwell tracer test (PITT). The PITT is a simultaneous displacement of partitioning and non-partitioning tracers through a subsurface formation. Partitioning tracers will partition into the NAPL during their transport through NAPL-contaminated formations. Mean travel times of partitioning and non-partitioning tracers are used to estimate the quantity of NAPL encountered by the displaced tracer pulse. Travel times are directly proportional to the partitioning coefficient and the volume of NAPL contacted in the subsurface environment. This paper discusses the conceptual background, design and implementation of PITTs. (This document has not been subjected to Agency review and therefore does not necessarily reflect the views of the Agency, and no official endorsement should be inferred.)

Currently, the concern about the environment is the issue all over the world, and in particular, carbon emissions of the power plants will not be able to disregard from the respect of generation cost. This paper proposes DR (demand response) as a method of reducing carbon emissions and therefore, carbon emissions cost. There are a number of studies considering DR, and in this paper, the effect of DR is focused on the side of carbon emission reduction effect considering Time-Of-Use (TOU) program, which is one of the most important economic methods in DSM. Demand-price elasticity matrix is used in this paper to model and analyze DR effect. Carbon emissions is calculated by using the carbon emission coefficient provided by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), and generator's input-output characteristic coefficients are also used to estimate carbon emission cost as well as the amount of carbon emissions. Case study is conducted on the RBTS IEEE with six buses. For the TOU program, it is assumed that parameters of time period partition consist of three time periods (peak, flat, off-peak time period).
Because omeprazole(OMP) is very unstable in aqueous condition, $OMP-{\beta}-CD$, the inclusion complex of OMP and ${\beta}-cyclodextrin({\beta}-CD)$ was made and physicochemical properties of it were compared with those of OMP. Skin permeability of OMP and $OMP-{\beta}-CD$ in propylene glycol vehicle and the reciprocal action of ${\beta}-CD$ with various enhancers were examined through hairless mouse. Adhesive patches were prepared with polyisobutylene and the skin permeability and stability of OMP were investigated. The inclusion complex showed higher solubility and lower partition coefficient than OMP itself. DMSO, 1-methyl 2-pyrrolidone and sodium cholate had an enhancing effect. However ethanol and polysorbate 80 hardly showed the enhancing effect of OMP. When sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium cholate as enhancer were added in patch, the former case showed higher permeability of OMP.

The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in air and plant were measured every other week at Hankyong University located in Ansung, Kyoung-ki province from July to November of 1999. The predicted PCB concentrations in air derived from measured Morus allba were compared with ambient measurement data. This was necessary to test the possibility of using the two equations incorporating Riederer's and Bacci's bioconcentration factors (BCFs) based on the octanol-air partition coefficient (Ksub/oa/) to predict the air-plant equilibrium of PCBs. Ratios of calculated to measured PCB concentrations in air were 2.4 (1.24~4.36), 2.7 (0.17~7.96) using Riederer's and Bacci's equations, respectively Regression analysis between PCBs calculated by Riederer's equation and PCBs directly measured in air, showed correlation ($R^2$= 0.90). However, slope of regression between calculated and directly measured PCB concentrations was above 1. The results thus suggest that calculated PCBs were overestimated comparing with direct measurements. Bio-monitoring using Morus allba may have possibilities in predicting PCBs concentration in air with a further extension of air-plant equilibrium research.

Active ingredients have been around in cosmetics for a long time but have they really resulted in active cosmetic products\ulcorner In order to achieve this, the right active needs to be delivered to the right location at the right concentration for the correct period of time. And the extent (and therefore the concentration) of this delivery depends on the formulation. From a rather theoretical approach based on the polarity of the active ingredient, the stratum corneum and the oil phase, the Relative Polarity Index was established that enables the selection of a suitable emollient for ensuring skin penetration of the active ingredient. Practical examples subsequently show the validity of this approach that demonstrates that one can regulate the delivery of an active molecule (and therefore the efficacy of a cosmetic formulation) by selection and control of the emollient system. Cosmetic formulations are generally quite complex mixtures and subsequent experiments using different emulsifier systems indicated that this component of a cosmetic formulation could also have an impact on steering the active ingredient to the right layer of the skin, although it is too early to be able to derive general rules from this.
Interfacial properties of commercially available soft contact lens hydrogels were studied to understand thermodynamic phenomena of protein adsorption. Hydrogel particles ($1{\times}1mm^2$) with varying water wettability were exposed to bovine serum albumin solutions for an hour. The remained albumin solutions were analyzed with Bradford assay method. The amount of protein adsorbed to hydrogels increased with protein solution concentrations following Langmuir isotherm. The partition coefficient ($P$) and Gibbs free energy cost of dehydrating the surface region by protein displacement upon adsorption increased with increasing hydrophilicity of contact lens. Understanding of physical chemistry in protein adsorption to contact lens materials enabled elucidating relationships between surface energy and albumin adsorption capacity.
The widespread use of packaging materials on food packages sometimes causes off-flavor and deterioration in the food by migration of packaging materials which consist of mainly plastic materials and printing ink solvents. Even though migration of the residual packaging materials does not generally cause safety problems in the contained food, it certainly can generate off-flavor and finally deteriorate quality of the finished product. In highly consumer-oriented markets, quality of the finished product is gaining more importance economically, so profound and thorough study about migration into food to maintain the fine quality of the end product becomes an importance issue. Studies have been conducted about migration of various packaging materials and the chemical reactions between the food components and the materials used for food packaging (Brody, 1989; Mcneal and Breder, 1987; Lawson, G and Lawson, C, 1996). Several of these studies have measured partition coefficient values (Kp) between packaging materials and various food samples and involved finding factors that affected the partitioning behavior of packaging materials into the contained food. However, to enable prediction of partitioning, data are still needed on the relation of packaging material chemical structure and properties to partitioning behavior, and on the partitioning behavior of various food ingredients and the total food compositions.
A series of bench-scale membrane filtration experiments were performed to systematically investigate the removal mechanisms of reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes for BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylene, xylene), trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). The molecular weight of these organic compounds ranged from 78 to 166 dalton. The rejection of organic compounds by RO/NF membranes varied significantly from 59.6 to 99.2% depending on solute and membrane types. Specifically, experimental results demonstrated that the removal efficiency of RO/NF membranes increased as solute molecular characteristics such as W/L (molecular width/length) ${\times}$$M_W$ (molecular weight) and octanol-water partition coefficient increased. This observation suggested that the rejection of small organic compounds by RO/NF membranes was determined by the combined effect of physical (molecular size and shape) and chemical (hydrophobicity) properties.

The microspheres have been developed as a new drug delivery system. Although many particulate drug carriers, such as liposome, niosome and emulsion, have been introduced, injectable and biodegradable microspheres appears to be a particularly ideal delivery system because the local anesthesia is not necessary for the insertion of large implants and for the removal of the device after the drug release is finished. Biodegradable microspheres with nicotine and triamcinolone acetonide are prepared and evaluated. As biodegradible polymers, PLA (M.W. 15,000, PLA-0015), PLGA (M.W. 17,000, RG 502) and PLGA (M.W. 8,600, RG 502H) are used. This study attempted to prepare and evaluate the nicotine and triamcinolone acetonide-incorporated microspheres, which were prepared by two methods, solvent-evaporation and spray-drying methods. The microspheres, as a disperse system for injections, were evaluated by particle size, size distribution, entrapment efficiency, and in vitro drug release patterns. The differences of preparation method, partition coefficient, types of polymer, and preparation conditions of microspheres influence the particle size, entrapment efficiency, and in vitro drug release patterns.
